>CS+Gamedev masters degree
There's your problem then mate, if you go for a shitty degree of-course you're gonna be taught shitty habits. The university I went to (LIU) did honestly start with telling us that we shouldn't abuse patterns our structures they taught us everywhere, they have their place and time and a huge part of being a good programmer is knowing where that line is drawn. Can even remember a specific assignment i got "komplettering" (essentially you have to redo it) because I had implemented an command pattern which for the scope of the assignment was retarded.
Second for webdev discussion

>If you set up different small pages and sub forums, the already small /agdg/ community will be more devided. I love it here, since I can easily scroll trough everything.
Well you don't need to separate it like that.
What you can do is have posts be tagged. So for instance we'd have a single general where you post. But you can then add tags for each posts and the game post replies are also tagged with the game tag.
This would give you a neat collection of progress posts for a specific game. If there's posting ability in the gamespecific pages they can just be posted as normal general posts replying to the old progress posts for the game. Why are you always so negative about developing something cool? It's like there's no drive to make something new here in /agdg/ aside from webdev anon. There's literally people who think tripcodes would suffice as a collaboration/job board/request method.

If you're looking at your wallpaper instead of devving you should kill yourself.
The page system is now mostly coded. Just a little further and I'll finally be able to get this thing back into gameplay again. Decided I'd redo the intro while I was at it to make it more character class specific. So far, it's not as efficient as the old system was - but it's a lot more flexible and pleasant to look at.

Vad gick du då?
>There's your progblem mate
No It's a fucking shitty degree. You're being absolutely retarded if you assume that Civilingenör i spel och programmvaruutveckling var en dålig examen att ta.

I like to use linux because it's comfy as hell. I can use krita and aseprite for art, and I'm completely useless and will have to trade blowjobs for music, or use CC music. So linux works out for me.

Are they supposed to be reusable? That's harder.
Otherwise just assign an ever increasing integer to the entity. Sure, you can't have more than INT_MAX entities spawn in the game if you rely on the characteristics of that unique ID but if you avoid that and just let it overflow that's fine. Not that I think you will have a player reach INT_MAX during a playsession of your game (because you asked this question, no offense).
>>144979598
Yeah whatever. Fuck that guy though.
>>144979751
>While linux is generally a better programming environment
Ok, ELABORATE.
>linux works for me
Sure. It works. I'm not saying 'you must switch to windows and pay unessesarily' I'm just saying I don't see the charm. Linux has its fair share of shit as an OS and the 'benefits' of having automake doesn't really cut it. You can get cmake on windows.
It's true that because of the way linux has its standard places for .lib or whatever it's all neatly organized automatically. But it's such an incredibly minor convenience becuase you're gonna want to keep your project self-contained anyhow if you're developing with other people (teams, you generally keep your headers and libs in a project directory for ease of moving). So it's not really a point for Linux, its pretty moot.

Most jobs where you're supposed to know C++ or C and they give a shit about performance. Unlike this other guy who writes programs for the computer ether and has absolutely no demands on how well shit runs or how maintainable it is. All he has to do is write some garbage that that completes before ragnarök and produces the right result. Thus he can consider things like "command pattern" rather than deferred rendering or whatever he was doing (likely not rendering, hopefully not anything with any data-load).
>What do those who work with you think of you?
Always hard to know obviously. But I don't get mad at people for arbitrary reason. But when some retard pretends tha univeristy is the best source of knowledge in the universe and that self-taught people are problematic (while he himself show himself to be a lesser programmer). I get a little upset because my experience tells me it's more of the opposite. But sure, there's some selection bias. People who are self-taught make it or don't. None of the 'I did CS but suck at it' limbo.

>projecting
You don't even know what that means. I'm angry with you for misleading people about what university is like and how 'proper' people are there. There's a large variety between universities and
>shitty game-making degree
We had two game-making projects. First one required us to not us more than basic OS interfacing libraries like GLFW/GLEW or SFML (their recommendation). The second project required us to implement everything from the ground up and you got scored on a lot of different factors. It was a rather cool thing. I'm rather disappointed by the projects they're showing on the program page.
It's obviously not bad but there's been a clear decrease in quality.
I really liked the structure of those projects. They're sort of what I imagine /agdg/ collabs would be like if you took it seriously and worked for a few months.
And I went off on a tangent there but the point was it was all real software development rather than gameprogramming (as in gameplay code).
>The fact that you had a hard time understanding what I meant by command pattern worries me
No I assumed you were using the word as it's meant to be used. Command patterns is a very specific thing. It's deferred whatever under a very specific OOP constraint. And sure, that's problematic. You had to redo it (thank god). But the problem wasn't that. The problem was that you considered it OK at all in the first place. It's a word you should avoid because it makes you look retarded.

For pirating if I release it on steam only then it shouldn't be a problem, since I trust the userbase. And by that I mean that the amount of pirates don't matter since Steam has enough of a legitimate consumer base to support a good game regardless of how much it gets pirated.
As for refunds, I highly doubt if a game is even passable enough that you will get more than 10% refunds, let alone a game that gives players a legitimately good reason to keep playing past the 2 hour mark.

>>144982112
>but could not test the "code it once, run anywhere" aspect. Is it true?
Short answer: yes
Long answer : Maybe
as long as you don't do anything platform specific in java it will run the same on windows, OSX, and linux.
Having that said there's small little improvements you can do for each platform where you might want a build for each. One example would be packaging the JAR file you get from a java program as an EXE with a nice icon for windows.
I don't really have any other agdg walls unfortunately.
>>144981724
I've read your post when it was new and I was wondering about an answer. If you look at major devs, there are two kinds of patches usually:
- Content patch: these usually contain new features or alterations.
- Hot fix: these contain fixes for game breaking bugs, exploitations, you name it. So basically anything which ruins or could ruin the gaming experience.
So it's up to you to decide this. If you want to add some new feature, but you know you'll add a few more some time later, maybe wait for it and have one huge patch instead of releasing many smaller ones. However if you find something crucial, then fix it and put it out as soon as you can.
A nice new thing might make your players happy, but an annoying bug might make the whole experience unpleasant, which is not what you want, I suppose.

If you want a more specific answer, then I say release it now. The controls were very annoying, and I could not name any other thing from your game which bothered me, so that's something I would release as fast as I can.
Other than this, on Itch.io, you just get a message on your feed that a given dev has updated his game. It's not like Steam or Battle.net where it doesn't even let you play the thing until you update it, and you have to manually set when and how you want to update things. What I want to say is that you will annoy no one if you update your game frequently.I've also asked it many times without an answer: do you have a high res version of the opening screen and about the screen which appears before and after each level? Those are some nice artworks, and I would like to have them as wallpapers.
>>144983681
If you -can- get paid, you may as well get paid, because >0 is better than 0.
That money can be reinvested in better dev tools (licenses, programs, even hiring people who are better than you at a certain area, like art) that allow you to gamedev better.
>>144982830
So far my strategy is making the game free until it gests slightly popular, then make a paid version with new content, and also a paid release on android and maybe ios. Still really cheap, so anyone can pay for it.
If it gets popular enought I could make a small kickstarter to have an slightier expensive physical release, people could get interested on having limited stuff like artwork and stuff like that with it. Worked for Kira kira star night.
I know I'm never becoming a millionaire, but maybe I could make a really small profit out of it.
>>144983205
Really good point there, thanks for your answer.
Guess I should release a small 'Hot fix patch' then, since the fixes I made are mostly for polishing the gameplay, and people will have a better experience with them, and later I could make another bigger update adding all the content I have in mind.

Well anon. I have to say you're wrong. There's a lot of frustration involved with working with these people (me being a performance consultant, they being systems engineers that'd rather write everything in mathlab). It feels kinda good to be mad at someone for justifiable reasons.
>We all know gamedev is a useless baby degree and that anon got mad because you called him out.
Gamedev is a fine degree if you go to the right place and look at them thoroughly. Sure, when you say 'i went gamedev' that's just dumb. But I qualified it. By saying CS+Gamedev. I get the idea that maybe if you don't give a shit to look into that stuff a 'gamedev' education is just crap. There's tons of "learn unity" educations available. But I told the guy directly we write performance oriented code.
I don't think it was the best education imaginable, I don't think anyone worth their weight in salt can say that about any education they've taken. But it was pretty good. And actually being allowed to care about how programs run feels good. I don't think I could get that anywhere else. This guy certainly didn't get it.

As I heard it's not profitable to dev "buyable" things for mobiles. So having micro transactions or advertisements every now and then might be better in the long run. I do not like these solutions as a user, but since the mobile market is flooded with free stuff, people are less likely buy things on it. I would suggest to do some research on this subject before you really make up your mind.

It's a native-compiled language with nice features like not having to use intrinsics to get SIMD. (which I think would greatly assist in making people do it, given what I've seen). C++ just adds bullshit. 14 has been pretty OK. But it's really not like I can trust the commitee with anything. They're quite literally insane. You can look at any of their feature presentations (in the past anyway) and they simply do not care about the usage cases for the code 99% of the time.

Not the same kind of stuff we're dealing with here. Of course a ASIC would be faster for anything. Or at least the same speed (but you'd have to program for some GPCPU that's pretty damn special then).
Pretty lame that you're trying to 'catch me out' when this isn't really in my field. I don't have to know about hardware-level programming at all to be a proper software optimizing guy. I've already had people steal my fanart of other games and removed my sig and claim that they drew it. In fact, one person made a drawing/coloring tutorial of one of my linearts. They sketched out a basic shape, slightly cleaned it up, then in the next step it was my sketch, then they cleaned that up, then colored it.
It was flattering. Then some subscribers/followers ratted him out to the mods after telling me. I would have looked the other way because it's just fanart of characters I don't own and I don't mind people using my art to practice with, but I know a lot of other artists are very protective of their stuff. Some people won't think twice about taking your work if they think it looks good. Happens in gamedev too.
In fact now I'm worried about releasing a demo here in case someone takes my game, uploads it somewhere else, then sues me for infringing on their 'copyrights' or patents. Kind of scary tbqh, almost makes me want to just not even release the game at all. I don't have money to dump into our expensive court system, and it's super-dee-duper expensive just to start an LLC where I live. I don't even think my game's lifetime sales would ever be able to pay for the costs of having an LLC within its first year. It's just too much to hope for as an amateur indie dev. I don't get how other startups survive past their first year on a single indie pixel art sidescroller game. Are they just super lucky?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_pattern
I've made it perfectly clear to anyone who knows what a command pattern is. I just wanted to see how long this could go on without understanding.
A command pattern is one of the obvious things that drop out when you blindly follow programming practices like OOP. A command pattern is the OOP-encapsulation approach to designing a deferred system. While other (sane) approaches would just pass a pointer to a pushbuffer or whatever you decided to use. A command buffer is one of those clear examples of what he was arguing against. So he's at the level where he's saying that a command buffer was inappropriate _for that one case_. While anyone with half a brain (that isn't brainwashed) should realize the issues with a command pattern.
SO yes. He's a verifiable retard because he defeated his own argument from the start. And nobody in the thread even caught it. I didn't have high hopes for collab. But now I'm hoping I just get artists.
>but you're a meanie, nobody will work with you

Are you taking issue with him saying that a pattern is something you actively try to use? I agree. Patterns are for describing code that has already been written, not for writing new code.

For 2D Godot is great, but for 3D I'd definitely go with UE4. It's much better than Unity in my4 painful years of professional useexperienceOur entire studio made the switch to UE4 recently
>>144990837
In object-oriented programming, the command pattern is a behavioral design pattern in which an object is used to encapsulate all information needed to perform an action or trigger an event"
So for example ints in a buffer representing later calls which you described in your last post as a-ok? It even states in the article you linked that an object doesn't have to be an object in an OOP sense.

I don't know, if you're not looking at making something with great/new looking graphics, I'd say the 3d is fine. If you are after the most capable 3d engine, I would agree that UE4 is the way to go. For the average indie developer I think Godot is sufficient.

>an object is used to encapsulate all information needed
Ok. So you mean that you have a deferred action to take. It's easily represented by an int, so instead of inserting an int into your push buffer you construct an entire OOP scheme around the int (or enum). Because you do realize that if you just pass an int to a buffer which you passed by a pointer it's no longer OOP. Wow. How surprising right? A programming pattern that's OOP stops being an OOP programming pattern when you break OOP rules?
>>144991205
You don't understand OOP?
> ints in a buffer representing later calls
Yeah, if you're doing procedural programming that's fine. But it's not a command pattern (if we don't reject the definition given by Wikipedia, which fine go ahead and do that but i'm just not gonna deal with you).
But you're just gonna be mad because of cognitive dissonance (hopefully, if you're smart enough) and call me stupid without argument for why I suspect. It's what tends to happen. I'd like to see something different happen.

i disagree. kurobasu was smart in 2 key ways...
1) it started out making real sport strategies into satisfying plots by exaggerating the abilities into easily understandable "powers"

Yeah its VR, I think i'd like to save the toungue strangulation to some bigger enemies, these will more be kind of "OMG THEYRE CRAWLING OUT OF THE WALLS" and having 10 of them strangling you would probably loose its spookiness quickly,I also will have enemies crawling onto you but those will be smaller than the walking-cherubs aka skull-crustacians

Aiming reticule displays above the model and the asteroids take 3 hits to destroy which will also be configurable for any enemy.

>>144998080
Thats actually also good for pacing, everything in VR is 10 times as intense. Having the skulls first walk/run to the player and then semi-slowly erecting theirsyringesinto the player would be freaky AND easily paced. Will probably have a rig ready tomorow with it. Thanks man.

>>144986269
Indeed.
Its tricky perspective to work with.
Is this for overworld stuff or are you working on something different for now?
Or are you even Diest?
I'm lost.
I'm using GMS and my assets are low resolution and I'm just scaling up. However, I'm using the built in speed/direction/etc for movement (yes I know it is often better to write your own physics and I have done so in the past) and I'm just wondering, is there a way to alleviate the awkward feeling produced by blown up pixel art moving at subpixel rates?
>>144999783
>Scaling it up
Not to be a punk, but I really would implore you not to do this...
Anyways, rounding/ceiling/flooring the sprites x and y coordinates could help some. At the very least the sprite will always appear aligned to the pixel grid. Although that might not mean much with blown up art.
>>145000081
What is the alternative to making a game at low resolution and scaling it up? That seems to be what everyone does.
>>144999783
Your sprites are probably too small.
Status effects are now working correctly (almost, some tweaks are needed, like blood should come after freeze stops and there's small issue with state machine but other than they they are working right).
I'll be adding different death animations burning and freezing. When enemies burn to death, they will just collapse and their corpse will turn black and when frozen and hit, they will shatter into pieces. At least that's what I was thinking.
I've been thinking about the freeze effect, because it's OP right now. Do you think it would be better if it worked like critical hit and would just randomly be applied with certain weapons or should enemies be hit X amount of times with those kind of swords to apply it? Any other ideas?
Small update
>>145000204
Scale the viewport instead (simplest way is the view settings in the room editor), not the sprites themselves.
Unless thats what you meant.
>>144999783
Legit question. What is the advantage of writing your own physics in game maker. Is it better control or cost efficiency?
>>145000401
Kinda like the hit X amount of times idea desu. At the end of the day it wont be that different from having it random, except it will be predictable. Make it scale with attack speed if there is such a thing too.
Didn't have much time today, but I will do this shit tomorrow. Get ready for new AGDG banners/OP pics.
>>145000401
I like the idea of stacking freeze on something until a threshold. That way if it's an intentionally difficult enemy you still need to weave to win. And perhaps have it wear off before the enemy is dead.
>>145000770So close
>>145000514
Well, for games like platformers, shmups, etc it is easy to implement and you have more control over it. Secondly, if you're making a pixelshit game you avoid the problem I'm having, where you have movement by subpixel values (if you want to avoid that "problem" anyway).
>>145000629
Yeah every sword has their own attack speed variable. Some are faster and some are slower.
The fire effect on sword isnt still finished completely as it lacks particle effects. I have no idea how to spawn them at correct positions yet, but I think I'll come up with something.
>>145000828
I guess I'll go with stacking then. Enemies cant be damaged while they are frozen, currently, so it's not completely broken. I'm not sure what way I should handle this, but I think I'll go with threshold and then when enemy is frozen and you hit it, it will shatter to pieces as I find that really cool. The freezing weapons will be end game weapons and won't affect bosses (at least most of them).
>>144982015
You forget that SQL Servers have ports
>>145000976
Same guy.I barely into pixel shit but I've yet to run into that problem or at least have not noticed it. I have the viewport scaled up but not the actual sprites. I'm using the built in stuff so I'm hoping that it wont bite me later.
>>145001130
I think the shatter effect sounds choice. It sounds like you've got a good idea of how to tackle Freeze and not make it OP.
Part of me wants to save this for monday, but screw that.
I haven't accomplished much because of reasons.
I have implemented a taunt animation, a knock back animation, and actually getting knocked back.
Beyond that it now sorts draw order properly as well.
It's something.
>>145001452
Ah, well thats good then.
Anyways, yeah, rounding the x and y drawn sprite values will at least stop the bugouts from happening. The game still can suffer from jitteryness and thats partially based on the decimal values you give for your speed variables.
The solution might require values like 0.4, 0.3 etc rather than 0.5.
I animated a new move: the powerslide. It will hurt enemies as well as moving you forward since it's a special attack like the guitar uppercut is. Whether or not it will let you slide under blocks and be a core part of gameplay or just a way to find secrets or whatever I'm not sure yet, but c'mon what kind of self-respecting game where you use a guitar as a weapon doesn't have a powerslide?

In gamemaker, is it possible to use the same exact switch with the same case variables at different times within the same step event? Or do I need to create a new switch with new cases?
Basically I have a system where I just want to copy the entire switch statement with its variables over to another part for later use, I don't want to create a brand new set of menus when I could just reuse the current system.
Whenever I disable the copy, everything works, but whenever I use the new switch, everything stops working. If I need to create a brand new system just to get a new menu to pop up, then no wonder why everyone hates UI. It's such a pain the ass. You can't reuse anything.
>>145002710
I thought about it, I weighted the pros and cons for this and came to the same conclusion as you.
The only problem with this solution is that you can't intercept opponent's projectiles mid-air (but this can be fixed by having a third color for some "power weapons" blocs both teams can use, also you can still block opponents projectiles by shielding yourself with a large block).

I made a couple changes to test something and I found out that the reason why it 'doesn't work' is that it does work. The issue was the way the switch activated. Since the requirements happened at the exact same time that both the original and the copy of the switch happened, both switches got activated immediately. There wasn't enough time for the new switch to set the options up because I had already made my choice.
Basically the requirements for the first switch are different from the copy switch, one of them being to press a button. But as soon as those requirements are fulfilled the requirements for the copy immediately kick into gear, which just so happens that one of those requirements are to press the same button.
this:
gamepad_button_check
needs to be this:

>I would suggest watching through the anime first, and definitely picking up/downloading the manga right after that. I regret not doing so sooner
The anime was pretty lackluster compared to the source material. The big surprise is that they are airing a new season this summer
>>145004791
I can't stand watching bleak/dark fantasy. Everything is so hopeless I'm just waiting for everyone to die off in horrible messed up ways. And they can't just escape the atmosphere even when the show ends, that atmosphere just follows them around. It's like gothic architecture/style/monsters/super seriousness 24/7. Like there's no room to breathe at all, some bad shit is always about to happen. Didn't like Vampire Hunter D and I almost gave up on Jojo during it's first season.
Anytime vampires or gothic architecture are mentioned I usually just skip it. this is why I can't touch games like Castlevania or Dark Souls or dungeon crawlers/most roguelikes/roguelites. You're just trapped in that shitty castle or dungeon full of dead shit that want to kill you. They don't want me there, and I don't want to be there either, so why bother?
If more of these games had cute waifus, I'd play them though. But most of them have some depressing/bleak protagonists anyway, it's just not worth it. What do you guys get out of these games/media?
I never realized how hard it is to come up with an idle animation
>>145006209

Entities can now have their own particle emitters.
>>145006336
Stand in front of the mirror and experiment anon. The actual hard part doesn't come until later. Trying to make the animation loop and then trying to clean it up. Good luck trying to make keyframes for those motions when they're so much more subtle than walking or punching/kicking. Huge pain, and a lot of work. But the reward...
>>145006467
It wouldn't be a roguelike, not if you do it that way at least.

>>145007693
We should use an engine. Godot would be better.
And also we should steal all of our assets.
>>145003915
i think that's better, although when throwing the third color blocs, it will be like throwing more ammunition to the other team, unless it disappears after using it somehow.
and these blocs will be part of the environment? if so the same problem arise, one player goes ham and picks the third color blokc from the opponent's base and wrecks everything.
con you push people with the blocks? that will be nice, but just when throwing them, because i think you can imagine what will happen if every player grabs the larger block and just run to the other. seems like a lot of fun, but i'm having trouble thinking on the balance, and maybe the "competitive" side of your game, it might get tricky. I just can imagine myself playing and enjoying the physics, sabotaging my own base by wrecking everything and trying to build my own structure without caring whats happening on the game.
i don't feel motivation for capturing the flag.
>>145005224
That's hilarious, but honestly I never understand how people think like this. If you're so concerned about using others' ideas, you should just go live out in the wilderness alone without clothes or fire, or even sharp sticks.

This is literally the problem I'm running into though. The closer I get to finishing it, the less it feels like you play the game.
It's a tamagochi combined with something like Sim Hospital.
On the tamagochi side, you hire adventurers, train them and look after them. Then send them off on adventures to try and not die.
On the Sim Hospital side, you have a guild hall and build it up with rooms and facilities to help you raise your adventurers.
The problem is, it just doesn't feel like there is any real gameplay involved. You just interact with it every now and then and just wait. I don't want to make one of those waiting games.

Maybe add a crafting system? The adventurers bring back resources you can use to create better items.
Or maybe you could directly control an adventurer on an adventure? A little dungeon delving thing, maybe.
Maybe you can adventure yourself to find recruit "special" adventurers from far off places?
If the guild grows big enough maybe you need surrounding facilities - a farm to provide food for the adventurers, blacksmith, inn. Eventually grows into a little village or city that you have to manage alongside your cute little adventurers?
Just some ideas, ganbatte anon-chan~
>>145023221
The game will have a crafting system. You'll have to use it to upgrade your guild hall and make items and gear for adventurers.
I was considering adding some kind of control for adventurers while on an adventure, but that would massively increase the scope of the game and if I can't finish it now, I sure couldn't finish it with all that extra.
Same applies to adventuring yourself.
Also the guild has those kind of facilities. You start off with a small building and make it bigger. Then you highlight areas and designate them as specific facilities. Then in that facility you buy and place furniture.
Making it into a full blown city sim would again add a ton more work.

>>145000401
I haven't been here in some time. Glad you're still working on this. Did you make it faster/boostier? Also did you make the screen space smaller or has it always been that small? Seems cool for 1 on 1 stuff but it might be a little cramped if you're facing multiple enemies.
I also really like the stacking/threshold idea for the freezing. You could possibly use a similar system for all the status effects.
For example, if you have a sword that has "Fire 1," and you hit a small enemy with it, it may ignite on every hit. If you hit a medium enemy with it, it may take 2 hits to ignite. Then if you have a sword with "Fire 2," it may ignite a medium enemy with one hit, but not a large enemy (but will stack faster to ignite a large enemy than "Fire 1").
For burning to death or shattering to pieces, you could just have that be a death animation (only) whenever an enemy dies while under that status. For the shattering, you could have an enemy take damage and "break" out of the freeze if you hit them while frozen but it's not enough to kill them.
Also higher numbers of "Fire" could burn for longer, while higher numbers of "Freeze" could keep an enemy frozen for longer, or things like that.
You could scale the numbers however. Rather than just "small, medium, big" you could have every enemy have different resistances, for example that knight guy could have FireResist4 but IceResist2, which is what your weapon status effect stats would be checked/stacked against. That way you could work in different weaknesses per enemy.
Just some ideas. Not sure if that's the kind of design you're going for. And sorry for the late reply. :)

Can someone who knows OpenGL try and help me out.
I just added two more vertex attributes (jointWeights and jointIndices), and have setup the buffers and loaded the data in the same exact way that I have done with the previous attributes. In my vertex shader, if I try to access either of the two new attributes (such as by doing: int N = jointsWeights.x;) everything gets fucked up. The image on the left is what it looks like if I don't touch those attributes at all in the shader, and the right is what happens if I try to access them at all. I'm using OpenGL 3.2 and GLSL 1.5 if that helps.
How should I go about changing weapons on a 2d character? The character is going to have one weapon "type". Should I just draw over the sprites with each of the weapons? or should I maybe make the weapon a separate object somehow? Anyone done something similar?
I ask because I am going to have a lot of attack animations, and would like to do it the most efficient way possible.

A-at least I still have gamedev. It's hugely different from my roguelike, but I implemented an ECS as described in boreal.aggydaggy.com, got a few simple things like the label system working, and mocked up a dialog system for my comfy shop simulator.
>>145028247
I'm kinda confused about your question but indeed each weapon needs to be its own item. As for your character, if the animation is different depending on the weapon he's using, you might have to make a second character object for that other particular weapon.
So yeah you could very well have, let's say, your whole Axe object being the axe + your character if the animations are different than your weaponless character sprite. Then in your code simply call the different sprites or something.
PS : I'm not even at that stage yet, I'm still working on tutorial prototypes but so far from what I've learned I'd say everything is possible so just do whatever feels more intuitive and best to you.

After putting some more thoughts into it : other solution would be to include all the different animations/stances etc in a single stripe and calling them upon changing weapon etc.
I've got this really, really weird glitch with my pathfinding algorithm. It works totally fine 90% of the time, finding its way through simple mazes and stuff, but for some unknown reason it loses its shit and gets stuck when I try to move around a 1x3 wall. Fucking baffled as to why. Guess Ill have to make sure all walls are at least four blocks wide.
>>145029135
Yeah that looks pretty sensible (assuming you didn't forget to bind the buffer and VAO again before drawing). I would say use a debugger like CodeXL to check that the values that actually end up on the GPU are what you're expecting but I don't know if that works with Java or whichever language you're using.

Actually wait, I thought glBufferData wiped the buffer it wrote to. According to docs.gl "glBufferData and glNamedBufferData create a new data store for a buffer object. [...] While creating the new storage, any pre-existing data store is deleted."
But since you're saying this worked before I mean I guess it should still work. I've always put all the vertex data into a single array so I could put it all in with one glBufferData call, but there is also glMapBuffer and glBufferSubData (IIRC) to let you change parts of the buffer.

I made a pretty simple behavior tree for friendly NPCs where they just pick a random location within 5m of their spawn location and walk to it, then wait a few seconds, and repeat. Friendly NPCs move at half speed of their data table entry. Eventually, when I make friendlies hostile after attacking them, they'll regain their original movement speed.
The pigs are static meshes right now, so if I want them to move I'd have to give them an NPC data table entry, and they wouldn't have animations. I was thinking about making them NPCs but giving them a billion HP.

My quadtree was fucking up, I don't know what was wrong with it. Under advice from /agdg/, I decided to remove it, and since my game is tile based, I split the world up into four separate quadrants. All of the platforms are put into a separate vector depending on which quadrant they're in, then I run collision checks on all the objects by checking which quadrant they're in and using that respective vector of platforms.
So it's basically a quadtree except slightly less accurate, and much more efficient since it actually works and uses less memory and CPU power.
Thanks /agdg/.

all things are more likely to fail than to succeed. that doesn't mean we shouldn't allow it to happen. we never know what may come out of it.
>>145036847
So make a 2d game or relearn calc.Or collab.
>>145036875
Right that's the very attitude that leads people ever into the collab quicksand.
If you look at the points of failure though, it's always the partners, and then the projects die.
At least as a one man army (or when paying employees to work on your game) your game doesn't die when someone ups and say "I don't feel like it anymore lol" or worse just completely drops contact with you.
>>145037048
it's more like anyone capable of producing something is already working on their own game, so the only people left who would do a game jam are ones incapable of producing anything
>>145036679
I'm only half-shitposting when I post about collabing as Team Rocket. I also think it's kind of a fun idea, to very transiently collab, and especially just making a shitty homage to /agdg/ by stealing and slightly altering assets from the thread.
I'm actually not sure my opinion on whether collabs could work here. I'm glad the anon stepped up to organize teams. It will be very interesting to see how that turns out. I hope something works out for using the website in a simple way that adds to the thread, rather than replace it.
I think a problem is that some anons don't realize just how casual a collab could be, that's also why I'm a little interested in doing like a 2-week #spacestationVN or whatever. So they imagine like collab necessarily leads to being BFF or signing a year contract or something. I think beginners collabing on a shitty game over a week would be a good idea, even.
>>145037048
as 1MA your game never gets made either. Most people aren't capable of putting on that many hats. I don't know why someone has to put in all that effort to stop something from happening.
Is using the key press event in GM considered taboo? I basically only use execute script or code block, but for the object that pauses it would be much simpler to just use the drag and drop event
>>145038038
Theres nothing wrong with using keyboard events if its for something nice and simple that doesn't require running before/after specific other tests/checks/general step-based code.
Just like theres nothing wrong with using Alarms for the same reasons.
>>145037136
>>145037229
Well yeah, some nuance to my claim: People who are capable generally have small finished things already. It's a much safer bet to collab if all parties involves have finished shit already on their own.

Co-op games that aren't competitive always kind of annoyed me. I had friends and siblings to play with, but I hated having to rely on other people being there to have fun, and when you have bad players (or you're the bad player yourself) it can quickly become tedious or aggravating. Even when all four players were excellent, it all just seemed sort of rote.
I wasn't a fan of Gauntlet for the same reasons. Also, trying to play Legends on the N64 was hell when you had no memory card to save with.
That said, I thought Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime looked pretty cool. With online co-op, I might have even bought it.

I can see why co-op games are no fun for you. Not taking a jab, everyone plays for different reasons, but I wouldn't think of non-competitive co-op games in these terms personally, for me it's more of an extension of interacting with eachother. But I haven't played much of them so maybe it would annoy me too, who knows. I played some doom/quake co-op and loved it, but there was a common goal in those. Even still, getting blown up by a friend's rocket (or blowing up someone accidentally) didn't bother me at all, it was more "lol oops my bad"

Trying to change behavior of the Lily Mace enemies to work better in 3D. >>145053427
It's a virus-based infection spreading game
The packets won't actually be rainbow, they just are for the time being for the sake of clarity.
In the end, there's going to only be a few colors for packets:
White for just simulated traffic, blue for packets that you can inspect to get important information (sent from government facilities around the globe, they'll include stuff like techniques they're going to use to try and stop you. If you create a wall of controlled nodes around a facility, you can stop the communication), red packets for those spreading infection, etc.
They're also likely going to move far slower
>>145053538
The chromatic aberration and scanlines actually look extremely nice when the quality isn't tanked.
I'm also going to add an optional alternative look that's white/orange/grey and more modern, which should also look nice.

I need to fix a bug where the chest shouldn't highlight unless you're within 5m of it (but enemies are targetable from much further out). Also, I just grabbed the highlight effect from a tutorial video. I want to tweak it to make the enemies glow a thin, solid red, and interactable glow orange or yellow. Maybe friendlies will glow green. But I don't think I want it pulsating.
Also, it should highlight the nearest targetable enemy even if your mouse isn't over them. One step at a time, though.
