Update: I went back to GameStop this morning and got my Odin Sphere artbook that they wouldn't give me with my preorder yesterday.

Yeah, I had never really thought about it before this incident, but there's nothing really stopping them from slapping a "new" sticker on a pre-owned copy (especially with Vita, where the cart isn't likely to show wear).
Which leads to the issue of the already exorbitant prices for pre-owned games (at least compared to what they give in exchange for them). I'm not one for selling my games, but I don't know why anyone would sell them to GS instead of putting them on eBay or amazon marketplace unless it's a game that is in such oversupply that you pretty much can't give it away and just want to be rid of it.

First of all, your armchair psychology explanation regarding Atelier Rorona is completely off the mark. It wasn't localized this way because of some sort of subconscios self-insertion cravings of westerners, but because that's how the word "Atelier" is used in the names of restaurants, hair salons, fashion studios etc. all around the world.
Secondly, any game where the main character has a distinct personality is not designed for self insertion period. The reason why most military shooters are made to be self-inserted into is because they're played from a first-person perspective.
