Enemies break out of your combos more easily and aerial raves are pretty useless, so SK is more focused on using small openings to build up and spend ninpos as often as possible while using their invincibility to stay safe
Some characters like Katsuragi and Hikage can spend a scroll to enter a more powerful stance, do this as often as possible since their defaults are kind of shitty
If you're in a pinch a jumping heavy attack can clear some space and set up easy stunlocks, be aware that most bosses can do it too if you get greedy
The shinobi stones you get from challenges are pretty busted so be aware that using them might utterly trivialize the game

I suspect the big three things that screwed over SK2 was:
A) the lack of warning over the radical change in gameplay (and how it basically flipped what the first game taught upside down)
B) The whole "introduce unplayable characters"
Both were really compounded by:

More accessible gameplay compared to SK2 to the japanese fans as it was generally easier compared to SK2 and more a gradual shift from Burst's gameplay.
SK2 had more through deeper combat but it's not what the japanese fans wanted.
(Though something which doesn't help is SK2 US not getting the absolute latest patch which would have likely addressed an issue Aerial raves had in SK2)
More playable characters in general (and at the time people assumed the new ones were deliberately omitted at the time making the backlash worse)

I just want a mod that gives people varying bust size dictated by /skg/ as appropriate for each character.
Asuka should be huge, since she complains about her huge tits all the time, tied with Kat, because Kat loves tits and probably absorbs boob energy from the presence of other girls.
Ikaruga should be her normal size, while Yaggers should be just a little smaller than Ikaruga, with Hibari just a little smaller than that.
Then just do the whole cast like that. Maybe have /skg/ try to vote on what size everyone should be. Go through moderated iterations and make a strawpoll for each iteration and have people say either bigger, smaller, or stay and just hone in on a middle ground.
For example, Murasaki's boobs should be inflated bigger in size and expanded further, in my opinion, to really give her that profoundly soft chest she's depicted with.
I really hope someone actually does this.
