I'm currently running a gameas in have had only one session yetwhere my players are playing a witcher from the Cat School and an "average guy who is an assassin but otherwise nothing special" who wants to gouge the eyes out of the people he kills as proofbecause eyes on their own are totally easily identified as belonging to whoever they belonged toand a third guy who's MIA
None have read the books but they have played the first two games and the first chapters of the first two games respectively
None of them browse /krw/ and I'm very tired so I'll just bluntly say that it's harder than it would seem to have to do with plebs who barely know how the setting works and have to be reminded that the village was burnt to the ground while one of them was fucking around in the woods for 30 minutes real time and the other almost killed during the raid because paying attention when you're not being talked to directly during the game because someone else is in the spotlight for a minute or even when being told directly that you see dead bodies strewn all over the place and the buildings now being nothing more than burnt logs and planks vaguely set up in house shapes is apparently too much to ask of the average person. 1) Is all loot random?
2) Where do you get those witcher gear maps from? Is it pre-defined merchants in the world, or is it a chance to appear on a merchant sort of deal?
3) Do different merchants deal in different prices? For example, do people in Novigrad give me more money for shit than peasants in Velen?

The thing that got me the most was when the "assassin" guy went up to the alderman to ask him if he had seen [Potentially Plot Related Man] and when I then asked him to describe the man (who also happened to be the only character that had gotten any physical description beyond his attire and general build) to double check whether or not he had been paying attention to the game, he just went: "You know my memory is terrible" and didn't bother even trying to recall the short description
Supposedly he has been playing another game with another group for years and still counting but despite that, he hasn't worked out a way to make up for his lack of ability to remember 9-word long descriptions like "dark, slicked-back black hair and ornate, black leather tunic" for longer than 20 minutes
If I'm met with the same approach, and amount of enthusiasm and engagement, of the average MMO next session, I will consider just scrapping the game since it won't be worth the effort (might just be hubris speaking but who knows)

HoS has the best story and set of characters in the series, but you can't beat BaW for sheer content or side quests. At the same time I expected more out of BaW and it disappointed me on some fronts, so I'm not so enthusiastic about it compared to HoS. I'd give HoS a 9/10 and BaW a 8/10.
