I've leveled a couple characters to 60 now and I still can't figure out what to do at end game after completing the story and farming hightown trying to get what I think is decent gear. What should I be aiming for?
Also can someone explain to me how an artifact (GoK) became one of the more common trade currencies? If everyone trades for them and has them why are they so sought out?

It's an ARPG, so the name of the game is farming to farm until you get the optimum equipment. With 57 characters currently, that's a lot of farming. Beyond that, personally, I don't think there's much to aim for. I enjoy the game for its simplicity and ease (after spending a few hundred dollars over the years and been playing for quite some time), so I stay around just doing jackall.
As far as the GoK, I imagine it just became common currency because it's still a very good artifact that's been around for a couple years. In almost all cases, a GoK is still a good artifact for nearly every hero, even if there's better alternatives now. Regardless of how many are in circulation, they're good artifacts, which is why they're sort of the standard, since there are better artifacts worth more, i.e. Sabretooth's Mane, and then there's other worth less. Beyond GoK, I think other common trade currencies include Hela blessings, Doop runes, and a couple others. Again, all valuable items that won't lose value over time.

your next goals for your first lvl60 is to gear up for Cosmic Trial, which gives you access to Cosmic Patrols and thus even better loot
if you haven't yet, get Pirate Deadpool because he makes trial a billion times easier. there's a guide somewhere, just google it. if you have any marks, buy Gungir from odin's and level it up. look for good rolls on your slots 1-5. equip an invuln core to your costume. there are more steps but i'll elaborate later if you want
then you can do raids so you can get even better loot, and get currency to upgrade your existing loot

Yeah, the game doesn't have a very good system for teaching players the mechanics, events, gamemodes, etc. and I don't know if they'll ever figure out a good way. Like many ARPGs, it basically just throws everything at you. Easiest way to learn is to just ask around or read the forums, if you can figure out how to navigate them.

Yeah, maybe I just need to spend more time in CMM. I was mostly farming CHT because of how simple and easy it is. I swear, bosses are tuned to be much weaker and have lower health in CHT compared to CICP and CMM, perhaps because the events give drops as groups rather than individuals, but it makes the respawning bosses more annoying/longer to kill in CMM.

Cosmic Anni week 1 = (1/25) * (2.63) * 2 = 0.2104

1000 merits isn't that much for four hours
in 4 hours you can get 5k merits or more
let's say the maximum time a CDR run takes you is 10 minutes
in an hour you can run say 6 scenarios. Each scenario gives around an average of 180 merits. so per hour you're getting 1k merits at the least. Realistically the time it takes you to get enough merits to buy something like an xmen uniform is under an hour
