The answer is Miyazaki wanted to put a callback to Priscilla in DS3 without putting Priscilla in DS3, and Miyazaki doesn't give a shit what the connection is or if there even is one. I think the most disappointing thing with Dark Souls 3 as of now is just how little uniqueness most weapon classes have in their movesets even spread out across all weapons in it. Weapon arts really don't help this at all.

The Farron Greatsword is the only weapon that really feels 'unique' in how it attacks, which makes sense because it's the only weapon with the (unique) listing in the game. Just played a ton of matches, using different shields with the estoc and shield poking is definitely ok, specially against katanas. However you still take a huge chunk of damage by shield poking, so it's still not as great as it once was. Not bad at all with Leo Ring, you'll win all your trades.

You know forced NG+ wouldn't be so bad if there was actually more to the game in NG+.
NG+ changes barely anything in the game compared to what dark souls 2 did. If FROM did the same thing or tried to spice things up in NG+ then it would actually be more enjoyable to play through the game again, but instead I find myself rushing through it because I've already picked up all the gear I want in NG, save one or two +1/+2 rings.
I think the fact that NPC questlines are so easy to screw up contributes to a forced NG+ as well.
It's not unbearable to play through a slightly more damaging playthrough of the same game, but this is one area of dark souls 3 that failed to take from one of the good game design decisions from dark souls 2.
