The game is fucked. It's fun for the gameplay, but there's an everlooming snowball effect where everyone gets more gear and the newer players can't catch up, but everyone ahead expects you to be geared even for the dungeons that newer players need to do in order to get geared.

Much as it pains me to admit, I'd only recommend giving this title a shot if you've had a good friend playing it over the last several months straight, and would be willing to lend their account to you without many strings attached. With the state of the game as it is, however, I'll have to warn you against investing your time in this title to any great degree, especially if you'd be starting off on a completely clean slate.
To put it plainly, this is one of the most new player UN-friendly MMOs I've ran across in quite some time. While progression along much of the "Main Story" quests can flow relatively smooth from chapter to chapter, trying to break into current endgame progression can be a herculean task for players unwilling to devote their lives to the grind, or crack open their wallets during some blatant Pay2Win event.
Increasingly high gear requirements for raids where necessary "upgrade materials" are located incentivizes the community to run with those who have already proven their worth in raw stats, rather than some random-random rolling with whatever gear they're able to piece together. Having a sizeable list of friends, a Clan, or this General to call on greatly helps in piecing together groups, but you'd still be staring-down several MONTHS worth of raw grind on a single character just to /start/ catching-up to the rest of the pack.
This is augmented by a publisher all too overzealous to release YEARS of content updates in one fell swoop, barely allowing this game's community to breath before revving them up for a grind anew time-and-again. For players with plenty of time to kill, this is perfectly fine; for those /without/ the hours to spare, such a ludicrous pace only pushes their efforts farther from relevancy.
An enjoyably fast-paced MMO does indeed lurk underneath all the chaff, but asking newcomers to chisel through the mountain of work set before them is too much for many to willingly stomach these days.
