I just used the DLC to make it a little more bearable for me. I think the biggest worry for Lunatic is the last few chapters. The rest of the game is still probably like Hard, but like... harder. But in the last few chapters, you need to find a way to deal with Master Ninjas who can drop your stats and continue to drop them, Enfeeble staff users who can do the same thing, Staff users who can use their staffs infinitely, that kind of bullshit. On top of that, in the final map, if you have no way of getting past the gauntlet of Staff users (who will all essentially snipe your stats from a distance, three Enfeeble staffs dropping ALL of your stats by 12) then you are losing a unit.

Story is pretty much the same. The supports though... while a lot of characters are pretty similar to their Jap selves, some characters get fucked in the ass. Forrest, Effie, both Kanas, Soleil, and Anna (somewhat) got shafted. In addition, you miss out on some amie dialogue since skinship was removed, and a lot of confession lines were changed (most for the worse, imo).

Keep all the fliers you can. There are a lot of chapters with a lot of open empty space where fliers can get around without waiting for platforms to come by. As for why they do it, it's because the last half of the game is full of floating islands. Rather than do some creative stuff with it though, it's mostly just "wait for platforms" and "use the royals and hit DVs".

Your stats might be a little fucky because you missed out on a few levels and promoted units get less experience. You can mitigate it with Eternal Seals (if you have the money) and stat boosters (if you haven't used them all. Only reclass if there's a class that you feel would do better work for you.

Setsuna kinda killed her Str growth so you have two options now:
Make her a Sniper, she'll have a better class with better skills, but she'll be outclassed by Tacomeat and her Str growth will be prone to getting screwed at a 45% growth (Setsuna has 35%, Takumi has 50%)
Your other option is to make her an Apothecary which will boost her Strength, but she will have lesser skills. I say go with this one unless your Azama is already one.

I think it's more the effect of the change of focus for those 3 between the games. In awakening Severa and Inigo were supposed to be "All around good" and Owain was really fast with mixed Str and Magic. Now in fates they got specialized, Selena became more speed and defense oriented, Lazlow became focused on HP and Str and Odin became all around shit.

Effie: Really nice. Arthur boosts help her combat stay relevant and prevent her from being doubled by mages. Kinda underrated.
Arthur: Another great earlygame unit. Early promoted him at Chapter 11 to zerker(in hindsight shoulda done it at 10 but i lucked out and beat that first try). At times(like chapter 12) he and effie split up to take out enemies faster when needed. Gonna not be combat viable by himself lategame but effie will be a wall by then so it doesn't matter. Early promo arthur is a good idea if you plan on him just being a statbot later. Married to Effie already.
Niles: because i'm skipping my castle stuff this run, niles is lacking. Thief stuff is good but 9 fucking strength, really dude? I know its bad luck but I might need to bench his ass and use Shura for Pass instead. Might marry beruka

Eugenics/Happy Family Emblem has a broad enough draw that I doubt it's going away any time soon.
Even with how shoe-horned the justification of children is in Fates, the content itself still holds up well and the re-balancing of children and parent unit stats / growth rates allows depth without making them Nuclear Bomb units that make their parents seem worthless.

Quixotic is a double edge sword as enemies won't miss either, Sol doesn't proc enough and Tomefaire barely matters when he can't double.
Laslow gets Astra, Aegis and Death Blow. 55% crit is kinda overkill and not all that necesary, Aegis doesn't proc enough as most enemies at that point come with lances and axes and Astra procs every once in a blue moon, often for an overkill.
Selena is the best with Luna, Counter and Warding Blow. Luna procs decently, though it's often overkill as her stats are enough if paired with Laslow, Warding Blow means she can attack the final boss for whopping 0 damage and when the final boss counterattacks she will kill herself. Just watch out for the maids, which Odin can kill through attack stance..
The issue with Fates is that it's hard to replay the two noncanon paths with only half the cast, while Revelations is by far the least fun of the three.
I might just bite the bullet and replay Birthright/Conquest, though only having access to half is eating away at me.

Might be an interesting change, though I suspect they may have to increase the number of friendship supports per character in order to make up for the lost character development that the children supports provide.
I also suspect that if it did happen we would still end up with some kind of story-based split separating one set of characters from another - as that has been the story-base of the substantial DLC narrative for the past few games.
I also suspect they would need to expand on platonic friendship mechanics and make them effect stat caps, growth rates etc. as Eugenics Emblem is a big draw for some people.

I'm sure that's how lots of players approach Conquest - and it's worth noting the replay-ability that children add in the older structure like Conquests - as any children you didn't get on one play-through are a possible point of difference for another.
I don't think we'll ever go back to the 100% linear style of game - Eugenics, Grinding for optimal units and getting a "perfect" play-through with all units / pairs optimized a la: Revelations are in fact draws for a certain type of player as well.
If IF keeps the structure of linear-style campaign + open world map style campaign + LETS THROW ALL THE UNITS TOGETHER SO EVERYONE CAN BE A HAPPY FAMILY campaign I think people will be largely satisfied.
The die-hard old school fans are always going to moan about the presence of Birthright / Revelations and there's a certain number of players who given the choice would choose Birthright / Revelations every time, as long as there's a bit for all of us and each portion keeps getting incremental improvements I think FE has a bright future ahead of us.

Just take a super-small amount of units. When I played on normal, at the very least, the condition for being caught was either "attack enemy" (obviously) or "end player phase while in enemy attack range". Since I was on normal, Corrin + Flier was enough, but for Lunatic, I'd say three pair-ups is best. One for Locktouch + Flier, one for Corrin + Flier, and one for Azura + Flier to get the Locktoucher out of harm's way after unlocking Mikoto's door. Or just have a super-super-strong Locktoucher.

Revelations and to a lesser extent Birthright and Conquest are burdened a bit by their kind of patchwork integration together. Revelations does suffer the most though.
FE writing is never going to be shakespeare, but with some improvements I don't think the trio is too far off being basically everything any fire emblem fan could ever want - assuming you're not one of the irrational Waifu hating posters who just wants every game to be a re-release of Sacred Shit.
Honestly as far as being the 'finale that takes characters from both routes and has everyone fuck' Revelations did pretty well. It's pretty hackneyed in part but if the stellar game-play base is what's going to be the building blocks of its successor I think we're gonna be alright.

I somewhat agree that the gimmicks were by far the least compelling - but that ties in part to why I think Revelations suffered the most from how the three games tie together.
If Revelation's had all of the stellar level types from Conquest then no doubt people would complain about how Revelations is just a re-hash of the previous two games with more characters.
Similarly, if more of the better level designs were saved for the Revelations campaign then people would feel burned by the fact that the more 'boring' levels are part of the base-game that they actually bought and would feel even more scorned at content being part of the DLC campaign.
I don't want to give the impression that I don't think we can have our cake and eat it too - I think the levels in Revelations could have been more compelling without compromising the quality of the other two titles, I just think it's pretty clear from the get go how hobbled Revelations is just on how Fates as a whole is structured.
