For someone like Xander obviously you're gonna have him use Siegfried all the time, maybe an occasional lance, but for Silas I always had hi use swords despite having access to lances and axes, so I could have kept Effie and had her use lances while Benny used axes, but instead I just had Benny as a lance user. I really need to work on it because it makes my units much less adaptable to new situations.

The game assumes you are MaMU in the first half of the game so as to prioritize marrying Chrom off to somebody which needs to happen for the story to progress, most notably Sumia.
Afterward, the game assumes you are FeMU in the second half of the game because Chrom is already married at this point. Sumia is dropped from story relevance and scenes between the MU and Chrom are intensified, FeMUs see this as interaction with their dumb hubby, MaMUs see this as bromance.
