You get upscaled instead. As for traits/skills, WvW is a path to those by ranking up. The level-up books are getting more common, as they are used for guild upgrades, and with the reward tracks handing them out every so often, Anet may think XP through WvW is not necessary.Or maybe they can't really fix the level-up AoE knock-back.

In all seriousness, the Desert BL is lot larger than Alpine, and for a while you only had access to 1-2 WP on the map max, which meant a LOT of dead time eaten up by running. There are also people who did not appreciate the verticality in parts of the map.
Honestly I love the Desert BL, it's a lot more aesthetically interesting than Alpine, at the least. If they could scale it down/re tweak the map so it's more in line with Alpine I think people would enjoy it more. Alternatively, give Alpine some of the stuff that's great about Desert, like themed towers/keeps and additional defense objectives like shrines (though I suppose we ARE getting ruins back, no?).

There were some legitimate complaints with the Desert BLs though, one that stood out in my mind is the fact that the Northern Towers were (and are? I'm not sure if they fixed that before rotating them out) too far from Garrison to treb it and as such were superfluous for anything but PPT. On Alpine holding the northern towers is key to holding Garrison as if one fell it basically became a forward base from which to fire on the Garrison outer wall.

No, they never fixed that. It's one of the things about the DBLs that people really didn't like, the fact that there seemed to be no real strategic reason to hold either the northern diamond or prevent the southern towers from being captured other than for mere PPT. There really wasn't any defensive or offensive advantage to holding certain parts of the map other than for score. The objectives on DBL don't seal off any parts of the map (since getting rid of barricades) and they basically just sit there.
Plus, you have the problem that at least a good chunk of the map isn't really usable at all for anything but idling. The center of the map has nothing going for it. At least with Alpine, you have the bloodlust nodes.
I'm all for the change, and if there's a rotation, fine.

And you know, I honestly don't believe this. My guild utilized the varying map terrain and choke points successfully and got a shitload of bags out of the deal in zerg fighting. I think it was more just a sense of familiarity out of the veterans. That said, if the DBLs offered strategic advantages and urgency to keep and hold objectives, I'm sure most of them would have signed on unless it simply comes down to the fact that they don't like change.

You're right. Hardcore WvW players hating flat terrain is bullshit. Sure, having an ENTIRELY hilly, completely varied map is bullshit because yes, you need open spaces sometimes.
Some of the best fights utilize the terrain, hell it's what makes WvW interesting and it separates good commanders from bad ones. EBG and ABL both have some really interesting terrain to fight around, but DBL was a fucking mess.
The main issue was DBL was far, far too verticle when the vast majority of skills do not function vertically AND that it was far, far too large. DBL was about 30% larger than it should have been, or at least that's how it FELT. It felt too large. It felt too spaced out and it felt like there was TOO MUCH terrain for the sake of terrain. In ABL you have certain strategic terrain elements to work around, but they aren't there just for the hell of it.
DBL needs to be around 30% smaller and 60% less vertical. They need to remove at least half the terrain and greatly simplify much of the layout, especially in the keeps. The map seriously just has too much going on

I agree with you on both points, however I will point out that the some verticality did allow for some very interesting and novel areas for siege placement. You had to think differently. All the ways to siege Air Keep were hilarious as they were varied. Sometimes it was just a matter of getting to those places, but honestly, kudos to the roamers and other folks that found their way around there and really set up for some good fights. But yeah, in general, parts of DBL just felt superfluous. As interesting as some of the vertical features were, they were just generally unusable for anything other than screenshots or maybe a few places to place PvE trash mobs.
I'm wondering what else they'll improve with it, but I think your and my impressions run with the rest of the community. DBL has the potential to be -great- maps, but that potential just hasn't been realized.

What I kind of hate is that the corners are kind of fucking useless in both maps. There's no reason to fuck with the skritt (in either map) or the wyvern/centaurs unless you need the respective hero points. Unless I'm forgetting something.

Honestly I kind of like how big DBL is. A problem I have with WvW sometimes is just the sheer reaction speed of zergs. Something I liked about the size and verticality of DBL was that it slowed zergs down considerably (and gave a great reason for Air Keep to defend their shrines - you could leap off cliffs both to engage and to GTFO) but Alpine you can just charge right across at max speed. The only real speedbumps are the cliffs around the northern diamond and the eastern keep.
I dunno. I liked how much more important it made sentries. The further you have to run and the bigger the space between WP means players have to break up more instead of bowling around as a blob.

Nah, there's really nothing there. It's a relic honestly of when map completion was necessary in WvW. It would be interesting if they put something in the corners that offered rewards or strategic play, but as it stands they're just more pretty places to take screenshots in.

I see your point, and honestly it's what made emergency waypoints so necessary and very important because traveling across the map can only be so fast and by the time you get to one side of the map, the enemy could already be on lord. We ran into this problem at times when we didn't have the emergency WP. Sentries were extremely important because by the time you received a callout regarding Air or Fire, depending on where your zerg is, the wall could be down already. I guess that's the one good thing about strategic play on the DBL was that you had to be ready at a moment's notice to haul ass. But it doesn't make up for all the empty space in between.
