And that wasn't even a racing environment, many people were busy with a farming build or doing their challenges. How? In all of my fresh league experiences, I never found a powerful unique from 1 to 70. Literally nothing would change if uniques stopped dropping.

GGG has some dumb fucking idea now about making leagues that don't have much effect on gameplay, so people can sort of opt in or opt out of the new mechanics. You can see a sort of rough 'progress' on this idea:
Beyond -> Bloodlines -> Tempest -> Talisman -> Perandus
From leagues that really changed how you played in your normal mapping, to one that had some effect and you could put some effort in to get rewards (tempest watch), then a league that had very little effect (except bonespire) on gameplay and most of the content was locked away behind a terrible grinding system, and finally a league that has close to zero effect on gameplay except for raping fps and the economy.
Pretty much kills the game if you've been playing for years and have done the mapping grind dozens or hundreds of times. Last time I had any real enjoyment out of mapping were the 1mhc flashback leagues, and if they stick with this design direction those are probably the only things I'll come back for in the future. These new leagues are just too fucking boring, and they seem to be done with adding even their mild effects to the base game (why can't we have the occasional tempest? nope, clearly a better idea to throw away all that content we created.)
