You're supposed to leverage your random drops into buying the items you want.
If you take any two weapons that share a class and craft them together you get a scrap. Get 3 scrap together and craft them you get a reclaimed. Get 3 reclaimed together and craft em and you get a Refined Metal. That's the basic unit of trading for most of tf2.
