One of the paragraphs of the announcement is:

a bunch of reasons. Convenience, herd mentality, finding groups, etc.
A lot of that isn't as necessary anymore due to the LFG cross server stuff, but gradually servers shift as one side becomes dead just naturally.
Beyond simply server pop ratios, the alliance pvp circlejerk was very strong at WoD launch and so many high rated players had faction changed (or simply rerolled) which caused many to follow suit, ending up with very lopsided ladders. There were times when you couldn't find horde representation in 3s ladders until past #100.
Again, many reasons beyond the obvious, but the biggest one is playing with friends and making groups, and once a ball gets rolling in either direction it gets worse and worse.

The costs to run our server was around ~500-1000 USD per month in server fees for all our realms (PvP and PvE realms, websites, ...). The rest of the work was done on a 100% volunteer basis. We did not pay any developers, any GMs, any person whatsoever involved in Nostalrius. We did not pay them because we did not make money - we resisted direct donations and in fact, we provided direct links for players to pay for the server upkeep directly. Even if you wanted to give us money, you couldn't and we would have refused it.

In reality nost cucked retail and blizz really hard. Blizzard always had the "ITS JUST ROSE TINTED GLASSES YOU DONT WANT VANILLA" arguement. But with nostalrius, you can see that people WANT to play vanilla, because it's simply a better game than retail.
Unfortunately for blizz shutting down nostalrius made nost cuck retail even more.
