I don't know, I feel like if Zaros was the master manipulator that you think he is, he would have seen Zamorak's intent. I think Zaros is genuinely too alien to understand the motives and minds of people who were born mortal due to having no point of reference to compare with.
But even if he doesn't understand mortals, I think he finds them interesting enough in some barely comprehensible fashion that he wants to preserve them, which instantly makes him a better candidate for elder godhood than any of the existing elder gods ever were, even if he basically sees the universe as his personal toy train set. After all, he doesn't want his train set to break, right? So he'll keep it running, but otherwise, he'll just leave it to do it's thing like an autistic child would. He won't be benevolent, but he won't hold total antipathy for all non-elder life, either. He's basically the logical conclusion of what Guthix was trying to be.
Basically, he's not a good guy, but he's not really a bad guy, either. I want to turn him into the universal equivalent of a sysadmin, even if he doesn't realise that's what he's trying to become anyway.

Theres no possible way the god of control whose sister literally warns you is lying to you and manipulating you. The autism meme seems kind of overblown, zimzam was fairly obviously plotting for a while (fucking saradomin knew about it) and he had an extensive secret police network that still had loyalists within in. Zaros also shows no anger and is actively glad that Zamorak overthrew the empire. Zaros was my choice of support for a while, but after considering what Anons are saying, I may not support him in the next Battle of him vs Zimzam. During Thieves, Zimzam actually had some solid views, even though he's edgy as fuck. And because I was on his side when the first Battle with Sara ended, he had some Dialog with with me about it.

I'm expecting Jagex to pull something else in this line and have the Elder Gods stopped another way, Zaros is probably the best choice for elder god-hood simply because he has a vague idea of what needs to be done and as the pseudo-off spring of an elder god would probably get at least some traction.

I end up having both devotion and resonance on cooldown some of those times. The sheer amount of effort I put into prayer switching/resonanceing/devoting/debilitating that one ranged attack and running away from his flames just extends the fights ridiculously. I only managed to get 11 kills this instance. I can kill Helwyr almost twice that amount of times, not to mention Twins.

Spirit shields are also dead content, but they're rare enough to have maintained a little value. This is mostly because EoC absolutely butchered the weapon+shield/offhand paradigm that existed before. These days, it's almost always more efficient to use an offhand weapon or a defender than it is to use a full shield, unless you're just switching to it to access some abilities.
Godswords are a levelling weapon from 75 to 85 now. After that you pick up a dragonrider lance, then at 90 you get drygores.

Actually, who am I kidding, it won't. I'm guessing dragon defender? It's absolute garbage these days, a tier 60 offhand weapon with some shield bonuses. You can run barrows to get an item to upgrade it to tier 70, but I'm pretty sure Nex is out of your league so you won't be able to get the tier 80 or 90 versions.
Go slay. Or work on the reqs for Plague's End.

If you don't have turmoil/ovls, then the game is pretty much hell to come back to, and you're almost better off just restarting to get the hang of things.

If you are serious about coming back, here's what I'd do:
- Either buy a month of membership for neetbux or find some way of getting a bond
- If you don't already have it, do enough dungeoneering to get the Charming Imp. Optionally go for the Bonecrusher and Gem bag too.
- Slay all day 'erry day. Chaotic is fine for this. Once you can afford it, buy a set of GWD1 armour for whatever style you think you'll mostly use. (I'd suggest melee for a reason I'll get to in a moment).
- When you aren't slaying, work on unlocking Prifdinnas (http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Plague's_End) - It's the new Varrock and has everything.
- Once you have Slayer a bit higher you'll unlock some things that, if you really really want to, you could just farm for alright money. Gargoyles, Ascension creatures, Spiritual Mages. You should make enough from just doing Slayer normally though to afford bonds every 14 days
- If you want to try a boss, you could try doing QBD (http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Queen_Black_Dragon). A royal crossbow (tier 80 ranged weapon) is almost free, but requires you to reach QBD phase 4 to make it. Once you've done that you can use it to make subsequent kills easier. QBD is about 5m an hour if you can do an hour of it easily, which you can't without t90s and overloads, but there you go.
- Repeat the above until you can afford Drygores. These are the cheapest level 90 weapons there are, and the reason I suggested melee earlier.
From there either just keep going and try bosses or start working to max or work toward other t90 weapons (much more expensive than Drygores). If you want a harder solo boss like QBD, look up Arraxi (http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Araxxi)

buy pieces to make a royal crossbow (should cost about 400k)
make some super antifire potions
kill QBD - very consistent money maker, I started out making around 4m/hr there, currently make 7-10m/hr depending on RNG
I use void, royal crossbow, and dragonbane bolts
