>How do I connect to [server]?
1. Register on a private server that hosts the same game client you have.
2. Copy their realmlist URL. This can usually be found on the main page of the website or on their registration page.
3. Look for a realmlist.wtf file in your WoW folder. This may either be in the root folder, or inside Wow/Data/enUS/
4. Open the realmlist.wtf file in a text editor such as Notepad and paste in the realmlist settings of the server. Make sure it starts with 'set realmlist' followed by the realmlist URL.

You will need a clean wow.exe and dll files if you downloaded your WoW client from XYZ server. Check the clients section above.

All right, let's say you have this really great server. Flawless scripting, all that jazz, but it's been at Sunwell for a few months and everyone's already cleared everything.
You join the server, level up, and then hit max lvl. Now you need to do Heroics for badges so you can get gear to raid with that's significantly higher iLvl than previous raid content.
Finding people to do the Heroics will be between slightly annoying and impossible depending on population. Eventually you're geared out and ready to raid.
Except now your gear is so bullshit OP that the previous two tears of content are worthless to do, and no one does them because of this.
In TBC, this basically means you skip Kara, Gruul, Mag, SSC, ZA, and Tempest Keep. Leaving you with doing Hyjal, Black Temple, and Sunwell.
Effectively skipping a little over half of the raid content in the expansion. Neither new guilds nor old guilds will do T4-T5 raids because they don't need to.
Badges ruined WoW basically.

Vanilla had actual progression, literally everyone started off in MC and ZG then moved upward. They didn't skip entire raids or miss doing out on any earlier content.

That's a long grind. Skipping every raid and only farming sp/ub everyday will take a very long time and isn't the most efficient way to gear up. Not to mention you'll legitimately want trinkets, there are missing gear slots like shoulders etc.

I have a guild on GD, its not strictly /v/ or /vg/ though, from what I've seen the scripting is very good, and we have a ton of helpful people. The weekends make leveling very easy for someone who may be tired of the leveling aspect (like myself having leveled on lordaeron before molten faked the "our server got stolen blehh", dalaran WoW, and a few others) but its not super active, i think the highest amount online in the guild is like, 20 or so people, and at the dead hours, 0.
