I think the next AC should focus professions as a gimmicky.
It's basically like the first 4 AC games, but has a new feature: you can now have a job that pays you bells. Keep the mayor and home designer, while having new professions, like police, doctor, owner café, etc. You can only take one of theses jobs, work, and then receive maybe like 10 or 20k.
Make it possible to also allow villagers work. You can either see the others jobs, or even, help. Think like the tasks villagers gave to you.
Oh, and it's in a console, not handheld.

For what it's worth, I think New Leaf is really good. It expands the game beyond the GC version. And, for me, it's much more accessible because its portable (I commute a lot) so I don't need to dedicate time to sit and play it.
If you've yet to experience Animal Crossing and online play, it really adds a whole new dimension to the game, no more fucking about with memory cards. If you take your 3DS on the go and get street passes you can also view people's houses and buy their items. The whole mayor mechanic is also pretty awesome. There's also a lot of character customization that just wasn't there in the older games, especially now your character has evolved knees.
The only downsides to ACNL is that the animals are waaay tamer and less emotional (In GC they'd rage out / sing all the time, it's less common in ACNL). Resetti is also disabled by default. Oh, and no NES games.
Is anyone still playing the NCG Version? I'm still thinking of starting a emulated save.

Oddly enough, you can earn your own emotions for your character when you've unlocked certain things in the game - makes for fun online interactions. Also Resetti is still in the game, but you need to pay something like 300,000 bells to unlock him.
There's a lot of content to keep you going, so if you already have a 3DS it's definitely worth a purchase.

The social acpect in NL is pretty nice. You can visit everyone here, you can get QRCodes from everyone on the internet and their moms, you can trade Items, shop in another town and so on. You can also visit the Tropical Island with friends or random strangers from the world.

For me it's Cheri and Mint. Everytime they change clothes about 3~ other villagers wear the same stuff 2-3 days later.

I remember in the GC version they'd just complain about how your letters were garbled. I guess they had some sort of writing recognition in there but it didn't work too good, so in future games they used canned responses.
