Vocabulary is dependent on how you go about it. You can get good enough to read VNs within 1-2 years if you're really diligent.

Anki for vocab and kanji and Tae Kim for grammar. I already know kana and some basic grammar from a couple college classes I took. The /djt/ thread on /a/ has a decent starter guide.

I did 20 kanji, and 25 words per day. At the same time I read a lot. Took me 4 months to read SOL VNs comfortably with the occasional word to look up, but thats where text hookers are for. Now my japanese reading speed is close to my english reading speed unless the vn throws a shitload of sci-fi or fantasy words at me.

Heh, similar story here! Only I learned 50 kanji and 100 vocab per day, and if I'm being honest I read faster in Japanese now than in English, my native language. Not only are Japanese Katana superior, but also the language is more fluid and flows faster!

Writing helps in the long run but you dont have to learn it. With writing system I meant kanji. Kanji are really intimidating at the beginning, but once you know most jouyou kanji, learning vocab becomes easy as fuck because you can guess the definitions from the kanji
