I'm just using it as a generic term for all the decency laws back in the day, but basically when the whole "batman and robin are gay we gotta make sure comics and books and movies are clean for the kiddos" debacle happened the powers that be decided having stories about gay couples are acceptable as long as it made it look like being gay was awful. So all the books and movies that had gay characters were either toned down enough so nobody could tell they were gay, or had their lives ruined. You couldn't show a happy gay couple: they either had to be depressed or drug addicts or etc. etc. Usually the easy way out would be having one of them die (probably from suicide because they just couldn't take being gay another minute). After years of this easy tragedy fodder it became a cliche, I think it's called mourn your gays or bury your gays or something. So a vast majority of movies/shows/stories with gay romances end in one/both of them dying.
In fact I remember a lot of my lesbian friends sharing a list that was helpfully called "Movies with Lesbians where they DON'T die" or something like it.
I think it's slowly getting better, though.
