Okay now I legit don't understand.
Standard -> 11 cost, +90% elemental damage.
Compound -> 7 cost, +60% elemental damage, +60% status chance.
Status chance alone is great if you want status chance, but the damage is just more damage. which stacks with the Standard mod but is cheaper so you can stick it on something with less formae.

You gain mastery by leveling weapons to 30 that you done so with before.
The MK1 weapons are shit versions of regular weapons, get rid of them as soon as you get them to 30.
If you're MR1 the strun is fine, go for it. Then you can try the boar at MR2, you might prefer it. The kohm is available too and much stronger than both of those weapons, but it's expensive for a new player and is ammo-hungry as fuck.

As a general rule of thumb:
If an enemy has a yellow health bar (ie. it has armor), corrosive will likely be the better option
If the health bar is red (no armor), it's probably better to use viral
Once you start learning about damage resistances of different materials/factions, you'll learn this isn't always the case - but 9/10 times, it's close enough
