It's mostly because your armor is shit and hasn't been upgraded with armor spheres.
Tetsu armor is a noob trap that teaches you to tank hits, when you should be doing your best to not get hit.
Start with a new set like the gore mix for more offensive skills, and pour some armor spheres to up it's defense.

Skills are based on point thresholds:
You need a minimum of 10 points to activate a skill, 9 or less will do jack shit.
Some skills have additional tiers at 15, 20, 25, and so on.
Likewise, having 14 points will only give you the 10-point tier boost.
This is the same system for negative skills, so having -9 points won't fuck you over with a negative effect.

Do what >>136036563 says. Play it safe. By all means, keep trying to attack Ukanlos when you can, but focus on reading his moves and how to avoid his attacks. Try watching from a moderate distance initially to get his attacks down, then start attacking and commit more time to attacks as you learn better how to evade.
Once you get good, you'll be able to stay at melee range while evading/blocking most of his attacks.

The treasure room is the first room after the base camp, and black blos spawns in the room after. The black blos room is the only place it can go and it is one of those nasty indoor quicksand caves, currently 136.

I don't know how it is for everyone else, but I was conditioned in every MH since FU to clear key quests and fully gear up in Village so I could rush my way through low/high rank guild hall. This is mostly because any armor you waste time making in lower ranks is completely worthless later on, so people want to get to the point where everything they make counts (ie G-Rank or High Rank depending on the game).
