Let's be honest for a second, here. Seriously. Ask yourself: "do I really like this game?" or "am I really enjoying this?". I think Dark Souls is the perfect example of Psychological Marketing. Developers and the media MADE US believe that suffering exhaustively with some sort of "do it again until you get good at it" business is something nice, something we want, the ideal gaming experience. It's not. Dark Souls is, no question about it, a beautiful game, challenging and well crafted. That being said, the difficulty level is just way, way too high - to a point that there's not fun at all to play it. But we do, we play, we suffer, because "they" made us believe this was the best gaming experience ever. I gave up on Dark Souls as soon as I realized that I just don't have time for this. Being a gamer in my 30s, I have pretty much 1 hour per day to play games. And I don't want to spend these precious hours hating myself or hating a game because I cannot have any fun, because of frustration. I'm no masochist, sorry. For me, the ultimate gaming experience is HAVING FUN. And there's [almost] no fun to be had in Dark Souls, sorry.

This. Terrible software. Masochism shouldn't even be marketed as fun, which is what somehow happened with this game. Unbelievable to read the amount of 9's and 10's this game got when it is nothing but pure frustration. The worst thing about it are its fanatical followers that just won't see through a thick curtain of bought reviewers and artificial hype.
A game shouldn't be unforgiving in order to be difficult. Dark Souls isn't only unforgiving but it also shows the middle finger to the player by forcing a sluggish character with pretty consistent input delays into a world filled with enemies that can kill you in the most absurd and random ways.
Spent hours trying to like this game but couldn't. I got really good at it but had to quit since I realized I was starting to feel really upset since it wasn't really my fault but the game's that I was making little to no progress. It is ridiculous and games that push their difficulty in such cheap ways shouldn't be scored that high. According to several people, gamers are masochists and love horrible gameplay mechanics coated with gorgeous graphics.

I bought SotFS when it came out and beat it, but figured I'd play the DLC later but never got around to it.
I don't really care for ds2 but feel obligated to beat the DLC since I've done it for the rest of the games, and recently replayed Demon's Souls (starting Dark Souls again tonight) in preparation for DS3

Sounds like the amalgamation of everything wrong with the series.
After replaying Demon's I think I appreciate it's use of restraint.
Ambushes and ganksquads are kept to a minimum, and if there are a ganksquad (like the bridge to penetrator) you can see it coming and adjust your tactics (like using a bow and aggroing individually)
The idea of "turn a corner and 3 guys come from behind" is fucking horrible. It's easily the worst part of the series. DS2 also has abysmal hit detection and hit tracking on enemies and it makes it really horrid to play.
I'll check it out, but I'm definitely not going to force my way through it.

From a purely objective standpoint it's a fine game, one of the best that came out in the year it was released.
But compared to its contemporaries it's the worst by a sizable margin. It had a lot to live up to so it's not surprising, but you can criticize something and still like it. I heavily criticize it every opportunity I get but I'm still glad I played it. It was a lot of fun.

Just like BB. in BB there was an ending where you refused to die, one where you accepted death, and a third secret one where you found 3 special chords and ate them and it summons the moon presence after you kill the final boss so it's like an extra special boss. Fuck guys how do I beat Ludwig? I'm at BL 50 with a +7 I think axe and some gems from the first chalices, but I do too little damage and he rapes me with like 3 attacks.
Should I level up a bit more? Grind blood gems? I never did chalices before because my first run was on a borrowed ps4 when the game released, so I don't know exactly how the chalices work either, is there some kind of guide for progression?
I beat the first pmtheru or whatever chalice the one with the watchdog at the end, then another beast possessed soul at the end, then one with the old guy descendant at the end i think.
