The scimitar isn't the "best" but it's one of the best weapons to train strength with. The mace gives a prayer bonus and has a crush option. The battleaxe has a high strength bonus and crush as well. It's dependent on your preference.

The longsword and dagger are the easiest to get and are dragon weapons. Dragon dagger can be poisoned and used to spec/poison targets. Longsword is just a stop gap desu.
