Poor skill sets and lack of defining dragoon skills. Kain sucks, frankly. Celerity 3* is mostly worthless (tempo flurry?) and a strict dragoon (drg5* and com5*) is easily outclassed by any spellblade in the game and even among other dragoons (compare Freya and Fang).
With Freya, we have access to a dragoon that can carry breakdowns and 4* cel like Dismissal as well as the new dragoon abilities. Why play Kain when Freya can do what he does best and also more? That kind of skillset makes her playable among other supports and her viability will continue to increase as more unique and strong drg skills are released.
To really answer your question: some abilities are clearly more important than others. the more of these important abilities a single character has access to, the greater the strength of that character. dragoon skills are not important.

So I want to play XII and have a few questions. My understanding is that to get the best weapons and armor, you have to skip certain chests or something in the beginning. I'm not autistic so I don't care to worry about that. Is the majority of the game still bearable without the best gear? Also, besides the job system, what are the big advantages if IZJS?

XII is only difficult enough that you'd need them if you do essentially no sidequesting or grinding at all, otherwise you can easily beat everything non-optional without being autistic about gear.
The main drawn of IZJS is the job system, and the fact that it makes the game significantly less cheesy by removing the ability to just get everyone all the liscences and other things tied to the job system. It also, iirc, removes a lot of the autism with chests, especially the shit with the zodiac spear.

IZJS does away with that chest skipping nonsense. The game is plenty bearable without the best gear, its one of the FFs I find does a better job encouraging the use of older gear to better suit different encounters.
IZJS adds job system which is really nice addition. There are several balance changes with items/enemies/magic in IZJS and they also add the speed button to significantly increase the speed of the game which is pretty nice for grinding or other things.

You only lose on the best spear in the game, the Zodiac Spear. And if you play IZJS they do away with that so you can still get the spear and open all chests if you want.
I'll give you some general tips for both versions:
>Offensive magic is shit, slow and very situational. Strong/fast weapons and elemental equipment is what will help you the most
>Don't get ahead of yourself, it's very easy to get shat on by rushing things and going underleveled where you shouldn't, since enemies of wildly different level ranges can and will co-exist in the same general areas. Save often and keep your levels steady.
>Don't rely too much on quickenings once you get them. It's great how big a chunk they can take off a boss's health but that MP waste may end up killing you and it's a bad habit in general. Use them mostly as finishing moves.
>Hunting marks can be tough but you can win yourself some cash and strong equipment early on by doing them. Your choice, though, only two of them are forced.
>Learn how to efficiently sell all the disgusting monster parts you'll be getting and how the bazaar works, you can get good equipment and items for cheap if you do it right.

My first BM Penelo was doing around 20k damage with Blizzagas after she got the Staff of the Magi with Faith, for example. It's not the best because of how slow it still is, but it beat or was comparable to my non-combo characters like Knights or Archers.

Release date event is on the 30th of this month. That's a two month difference (roughly) in time between between the event and May 20th. We've already been spoonfed tons of information on the game, locations, story motivations, and a crapton of other stuff that would go into advertising the game before release, not to mention that we're going to be getting a metric shitton of info at the event besides the release date. They mentioned that they were in the debugging phase of the game back in January IIRC. It's safe to assume that localization work is being done right now as well, and to expect a simultaneous worldwide release given that the release date event is being held in LA.

What's not certain, though, is whether we'll get Tifa's MCII; it was supposed to be made available during the Cloudy Wolf event, but since DeNA moved that before the Hall of Rites, who knows? We didn't get the missed MCs (Firion, Ingus and Edward) when it was open at the end of last year.

Banner 1 seems kind of weak. Quistis is too shit even if her SSB is good. Yuna's SSB is not as good as her regular heal SB. Revolved and oak staff wtf?
Banner 2 is literal ass. The non-SSB items are more appealing than the SSBs.
Banner 3 looks kind of legit. Vanille SSB becomes the best aoe heal in the event now that they took other shit away. Organics is always good and so is cloud. Terra is one of the best mages and her SSB is there. the 2 fuccboi regular SBs kind of ruin it but its ok otherwise.
Banner 4 has pretty good SSB but the rest is kind of bad. Edgar ruins it, and kefka's bad SB. Exdeath okay, the qts ok too.
Banner 5 probably the best one. 4 good SSB and SG. Yuffie's aoe heal is good. Golbez is not great but its okay, galufs old hammer is literally rosetta stone tier though.

Banner 1 looks like its good if you get SSB and shit if you don't. Banner 2 just looks like someone actually took a shit and pasted it on a banner, fuck it its the only one I know for sure to avoid. 3 looks okay like some good SSB and the other stuff seems okay too. 4 looks like the safe choice like nothing is good on it but nothing is bad either. Penelo make a great Red Mage, though BM is good too.
Whatever you do DON'T make Balthier or Fran an Archer, or Balthier a Mechanist. Balthier makes a good White Mage or maybe Hunter, Fran doesn't stand out anywhere so she can fill whatever role you have left. If you must have a Breaker, though, make it her.
Though you can just ignore all this and do whatever, the stat differences between characters are pretty negligible.

Breaker's not bad for harder boss fights since they have all the breaks, but their inconsistent damage with axes might bother you otherwise. Fran has the highest Vitality which makes her pretty good for the role.
Archer isn't terrible (but I personally don't like it), I was just saying not to make Fran or Balthier an Archer. Their bow attack animations are longer than the other characters' for some reason.
Also Mechanist doesn't get Time Magick. And the class is shit in my opinion for late-game, I'd advise against using it.

The Lucky Draw is it's own banner. It doesn't have increased odds for any specific weapon, it can only be done as an 11 pull, and any 5-star items you get are guaranteed to be a unique SB, no shared SBs, no 5-stars without SBs. All unique SB items that have ever been put out are equally possible to pull, and it costs 25 mythril or 1500 gems. Banner 1: Bartz SSB is really good. Quistis SSB is good, but Quistis sucks, so eh.
Banner 2: Eiko has a medica, but I have no idea if reraise is any good. I'm inclined to say no though. The rest of this banner sucks.
Banner 3: Medica with a questionable added effect. Laguna SSB could be okay, but slow proc doesn't seem terribly exciting.
Banner 4: Eiko's medica, renamed for Aerith. Valiant Knife is great.
Banner 5. SG + Yuffie's headband,+ Garnet's SSB (just a better version of Quistis's) + Peacemaker. This is probably the best banner, but is last, so you can't plan around it.
*tldr* tons of medicas. 2&3 are weakest banners.

I agree with some reservation. Thief + Celerity should theoretically make any character pretty strong. The issue comes when so many other characters have that combo - we need to look at what other niche they can fill. Versus Faris, Support + Machinist is much better than Ninja + BM (only 3*). Versus Vaan, Combat + Support > Ninja + BM.
Does this matter if you get her headband for a sick 40% heal at instant speed? Probably not.

Retaliate is still good, but going all-in with multiple double cuts has fallen out of favor for themost difficult content. You can beat up to ++ easily with Retaliate and mitigation. For +++ and Ultimate, the demand for even more mitigation, certain required for mastery abilities, and their very high defenses means you have to "play seriously."
When you are limited by your gear and ability options (like when you're new), Retaliate is still the best choice.

The only problem with this is versatility doesn't really matter much in RK. Okay, this character CAN fill multiple roles, but you're still limited to two skills, so it's not like you're actually going to be able to have them fill multiple roles in a single dungeon. You can change them to a different role by changing skills between dungeons, but you can also just as easily change characters.
Sure, I could use Tellah as a Black Mage in one dungeon and as a White Mage in another, or I could just take Rinoa when I need a Black Mage and Yuna when I need a White Mage. Tellah's versatility doesn't really make him useful.
