So this thread can we just stop being autistic about people playing games you may not personally like and just play sims?

If you are one of those people who for some reason, are beside themselves when other people are enjoying themselves whilst playing a game you don't like, then please take a step back and really think about the life choices that got you to this point.

For anyone interested in BMS ops
>which timeframe works best for you?
>how proficient are you? (bmshost is a nice guy and will help you get started if you just ask him)
>what kind of ops do you prefer?
BMS ops use ingame radios known as IVC. Even though we try to keep it real it's not some uptight shitshow like 104th.
Enlist today!

Coldstarts are not required. Ops take long enough without everyone waiting for INS to align etc.

What's a good flight sim that's not too hard to get into and can be played on a HOTAS X?

I've tried DCS World and IL2: 1946 but I can't really find a decent setup for them with my HOTAS X.
>>
>>135165179
What? DCS is easily playable with the HOTAS X

Source: I use one

You gotta set up shift modifiers, I personally use L2 and R2 on the back of the throttle.
>>
>>135165240
I'm pretty new to flight sims so I have no idea what a good control scheme would be, no idea what's essential and all that.

If you could share your config that'd be great.
>>
>>135165025
acmi files for bms tend to become pretty big due to the amount of stuff going on. I'll try to record something next time though.
>>
Different anon here

When starting out just bind the very essential (X/Y axis, throttle and weapon release)

Do the training missions and use keyboard shortcuts as told in the training

Over time you'll figure out which buttons you frequently use, those are the ones you put on your hotas with modifiers
>>
>>135165551
Open in Tacview and resave it. It'll compress all that shit down. Not sure what will be missing though.

It's actually pretty good as far as flight models go, it's a hovercontrol mod

Still no settling with power, the tail rotor has way too much authority and translational lift doesn't exist, but it feels a lot more lively, and it actually requires the appropriate inputs into the controls to make it fly and hover, unlike the vanilla model which is just pick up and go. It's honestly hon par with Take on Helicopters, which is better than it was, but it definitely still needs some TLC.

The Mirage 2000C is on pretty even footing with an F-16A; they were contemporaries.

The two evolved down different paths, with the F-16 gaining a lot of ground-pounding capabilities (and weight); while the Mirage split into two very different models, the Dash 5 for A2A, and D for A2G.

I made the webm and my rig is around 2-3 years old now and consists of the following:

i7 4770k
GTX 780 Ti
16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3
ASUS Saber tooth mobo

I don't always have good FPS tho. This webm was taken when I was testing out the night vision in thunderstorm conditions for a mission I'm working on and only had that other Hip in it. When I'm playing online I'll usually get around 60-80 if nothings happening, and less if stuff is exploding.

The Mirage is the most fun modern DCS jet to do BFM in, sure it bleeds energy like crazy in sustained turns, but it picks it back up really quickly. F-15 doesn't stand a chance, Su-27 fares a little better, but needs to end the engagement before it bleeds off all it's energy.

Speaking of which, is the AIM-54 the only long-range A-A missile? I know that missile turned out pretty useless only being fired 3 times for 0 kills (ignoring Iran's probably hugely inflated claims) and only ever being mounted on a single aircraft, but why? Why has nobody attempted to make a missile that can score kills from a hundred fucking miles away, is it because big slow bombers are irrelevant now and it's just not possible to hit a fighter at that distance?

Does it really matter with the FC3 modules? I could understand the ones with the clicky cockpits (although there's tooltips to show you what each button/switch does and you'll quickly know the layout by heart anyway), but the only difference besides that is the computer's voice, and that's subtitled anyway.
>>
>>135199310

Just FYI, you can switch the cockpit tooltips on the 21 from vodkarunes to english by opening up the file in notepad++ (regular notepad makes it crash) and changing the RU in line 5 to EN. Might be worth putting the edited file in JSGME else you'll have to redo it every time the game updates.

>>
>>135200412
Supersonic flight creates immense drag, thus you need insane amounts of rocket propellant, which makes your missile heavy and a heavy missile is fucking, since it cannot turn. Rocket engines are simply the worst kind of propulsion for sustained atmospheric flight, but the only disposable supersonic propulsion system. Subsonic missiles are even more shit, since they can neither turn nor even catch up to the target. So yeah long range missiles are inherently problematic.

The tooltips are already in English, you can do that with the ingame settings there's no need to fuck around with config files. I just like having everything labeled in English. There's already by default an English cockpit you can use but half the shit in that cockpit isn't even translated to it's a retarded mix of English and Russian, the modded cockpit fully translates everything.

>>135201252
You only need the .exe, not an install of the full game. I think they just do that to cover their ass for legal reasons, I think at this point the BMS install uses pretty much nothing from the original Falcon 4.0. Just google it, you can download the .exe for free from somewhere.

The hog is plastic bullshit wrapped in a fancy exterior. I'd rather have the CH gear which is supposedly actually high build quality internally, except now apparently they're made more cheaply in Mexico.
>>
The Mighty 8th and IL-2 really make me want a modern, MP-centric B-17 or B-25 sim
>>
>>135203625
I don't know. The F-15c module was only $10 so I was just like whatever.
>>
>>135203670
>supposedly actually high build quality internally
Yeah except for potentiometers. Your best bet is getting the Hog/Black Mamba frankenHOTAS.
>>
>>135203670
Nah the hog is actually pretty decent if you treat is right. It costs a lot of money and a plastic gimbal isn't ideal but it's still the best stick on the market unless you want to throw hundreds of dollars at VKB frankensticks. CH may have rugged internals but their sensors are the worst of the lot.
>>
>>135200774
IMO CH is overrated, they may have been decent 10 years ago but, hello? IT'S 2016!. They feel like shit, have weird detents and terrible pots. On the plus side I guess they have good ergonomics and and very durable. The pedals are also one of the cheapest ways to get pedals.

>>135204992

>>
>>135204216
>>135204720
>>135204992
What's wrong with potentiometers? I know eventually they get clogged with dirt and stuff but assuming you keep it clean what's so bad about them? My current TM Hotas X shitstick seems accurate enough for me and that has pots too.

>>135205219
I think the CH gear is a bit cheaper than the warthog but not by a huge amount.
>>
>>135203670
With the CH bits the worst that can happen is that you get a slightly wobbly piece and you send it back for a replacement if you care enough. Me, I'd rather just do a small DIY fix since it really doesn't interfere with operation at all.
>>
>>135205459
Not only they get clogged with shit, they deteriorate with use and they aren't even close to be as accurate as magnetic sensors, I heard that some pots have the tendency to "jitter" too, and you can definitely see that happening with consoles' gamepads.
>>
>>135200412
The Russians had some long range missiles for the MiG-25 and stuff. Similarly XBOX HUEG to the AIM-54.
>>
>>135206135
My CH stuff jitters a bit, but you can delete that problem by just adjusting saturation/deadzone by a couple points. I'm probably going to get warthog or whatever is the top tier in a few years, because it's missing a couple of buttons that are very useful despite how many are already there.
>>
>>135204720

If you're going to mod your stick or build a frankenstick, you're way better off starting with a Force Feedback 2.

Nothing, repeat, nothing on the market holds a candle to the FFB2. Even if a game doesn't have force feedback support, the motor-centring action is still way better than anything made by CH or Thrustmaster; and you can use utilities like SimFFB to adjust your centring force, friction, and damping.

Alternatively, gut an old Thrustmaster FLCS or FCS and replace the pots with hall effect sensors, and drive the whole thing with MMjoy.

I'm still waiting on a military flight school, myself. The thing is, if you're going to fly, military's honestly the best way to go about it, in the states at least. You get flight hours on the regular and once you're out that military license is, by FAA rules at least, an automatic commercial certification.

Funny how both sides went through all these weird designs and crazy super fast aircraft and stuff then bombers became kind of irrelevant for a lot of missions and then they both decided fuck it and stuck with the plain simple B-52 and Tu-95 for half a century.

Also the B-52 was built 1952-1962 and the C-130 has been in production since 1954.

The B-36 deserves a special place in history for its uniquely troubled history, though.

It was slow, in spite of its massive size the crew compartments were cramped, its engines were obsolete when they rolled off the production line and caught fire on the regular, it was maintenance-heavy, it was considered too vulnerable and fragile to be used in combat over Korea, and was relegated to high-altitude reconnaissance missions, it was so expensive its development interfered with the procurement of aircraft carriers, and in the event of a nuclear war a flight to attack the Soviet Union would be a one-way trip, as it didn't have the combat radius to make it back to the states.

Huey is a very stick and rudder experience, and is a lot of fun to fly in general. It doesn't have as powerful weapons as the Hip, but it does have door gunners and miniguns on flex mounts which makes it very effective at destroying light armor and infantry groups.

The Hip is a much more powerful and heavy helicopter though, and can carry more powerful weapons. It's harder to fly than the Huey at first because its hard to get used to the autopilot system, but is much easier and more forgiving after you get the hang of it.

The Kamov is a CAS heli and can't carry troops, but it can sling load cargo like the Huey and Hip.

It's up to you but if its your first heli I would probably go for the Huey and use that to learn.
>>
>>135232331

>>135232264

The turbojets were added because they were worried the plane was too slow flying over a target area, once they were added they were only operated during takeoff, climbs to high alt and to zoom over a target, otherwise they were shut down and just ran on the prop engines. There was as I understand alot of politics involved with the B-36 and that it was a huge waste of money with the advent of the jet age.
>>
>>135234760
Flying in sims is actually harder than IRL since you have worse visibility and you have no sense of motion. Can't use your sense of balance to keep a heli in a hover in DCS.
>>
>>135234760
What
>>135235261
said, sim-helicopter flying is actually harder than flying IRL. I can pinnacle and slope-land in real life without any problem and hold a hover to within inches of a spot, but pinnacles and slopes are next to impossible in sims and holding a steady hover is harder without depth perception. Plus, there's the whole "seat of your pants flying" thing that goes out the window, as a huge part of flying is the sense of movement you get in your body from the aircraft moving through the air, and a lot of audio cues are missing, too; you can hear if your rotor RPM is too high or too low before the light goes on, and that's not as much of a factor in sims.

If you've never played against humans you're likely in for a rude awakening no matter how good you are at fighting the AI. There's a ton of things that you can do against the AI and they don't react differently, and a ton of things players do to you that the AI doesn't.

If you at least know how to use all the F-15's radar modes and pointing it places then you'll have the systems knowledge needed. The rest comes with practice. Most people don't fly with TS in airquake anyway so it's whatever. If you're good, you'll be fine.

Though it's definitely easier if you're flying with a buddy.

I have a question about how the stick and throttle work. Normally in aircraft with two sets of flight controls moving one set will cause the other set to move as well, right? So how does it work in the L39 since there's no way to sync up the controls for both players?
>>
>>135246061
There are settings in the mission editor to customize how you want that handled.
Pilot Priority: Front Seat can take control at any time. Instructor has to ask for controls.

Instructor Priority: Instructor can take control at any time but if the student wants control the instructor has to approve first.

Ask Always: Taking control always requires confirmation by the player in control of the aircraft.

Equally Responsible: Both players can take control at will.
>>
>>135246061
>>135246551
Now how well the syncing works comes down to latency obviously, this is something they will continue to tune as I believe multiseat is a big thing moving forward with DCS.
>>
Is the huey weapons training broken? It tells you to move to the side door gunner position, but it doesn't work--possibly because there is no side gunner on the helicopter.
>>
>>135247607
It seems so, you would have to either edit the mission yourself or rearm and add gunners.
>>
>>135247854

>>
>>135248342
It might just be a headtracking issue. As of right now, my pilot moves his head left and right about 4", which is not enough to get a new perspective on things.

Interesting that once Iran lost the supply chain for the F-14 due to US embargo; they offered to sell the entire fleet to Canada for pennies on the dollar. Canada's involvement in the Hostage Crisis ended up killing the deal. I can only imagnie that if that deal had gone through, we'd have Tomcats patrolling the Arctic to this day.

That's a Lake LA-4, was on the FAA registry, listed as exported, but there is no export date.

Doubt someone would go to such a large expense to leave it derelict.

Oh and the LA-4 is a pusher, which is why it looks like it has no prop in that pic.

It's Russia, if it was imported pre-1991 DOSAAF mayn't have enough money to support it though. But I'm pretty sure this one is flying since it doesn't look abandoned.

Hope you guys are hype for my hardest mission yet.

Next major op for DCS will be night time CSAR ops.

Lets set the date for this Friday at 21:00 UTC.

The op includes the following aircraft:
Huey, Hip, Ka-50, A-10A, A-10C, Su-25T, Su-25A, M-2000C, P-51, and TF-51.

The Mirage and Su-25T/A will require night vision mods you can find here:

Mirage: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/1741266/

Su-25T/A: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1697785&postcount=5

If you wish to join give me a (you) so I can estimate how many people are gonna fly.

Make sure you read up on your guides and if you are flying the Huey or Hip read up on the radio navigation.

Chuck's Guides: https://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/discussions/0/618463738391226124/

You don't need to have a 1:1 scale, you can tweak the curves as you see fit.
>>
>>135267526
So it's really sensitive and you look over your shoulder all the times by accident? If you lower the sens you have to tilt the head more. Even looking away from your screen ever so slightly reduces vision by a lot.
It seems flawed no matter what. A VR headset sounds like the best solution to me.
>>
>>135267654
It's not hard, dude. You can look over your shoulder by putting your head at perhaps 45 degrees to the screen.
>>
>>135267654
Maybe if you want a resolution so bad you can't read your cockpit instruments yeah, in that case VR is the way to go
>>
>>135267595
Update your shit.
>>
>>135267654
it's as sensitive as you want it to be, this isn't hard to understand. But I'm sure you realise that really.
>>
>>135267654
Sure but trackIR is cheaper and works with an existing monitor and adds pretty much zero overhead and has been around for years. VR will probably be better eventually but for now it's pretty flawed. TrackIR isn't as bad as you make it seem either, once you set it up well to your liking you can very accurately control the camera and it starts to feel completely natural.
>>
>>135267806
Oh jee thanks annon now i have to redo my profile because naturalpoint a shit.
>>
>>135267654
I tend to have my curves set up so that when I'm facing the edge of my monitor, thats the camera looking over my shoulder. It works pretty well and unless you're prone to twitches that make your head move 30-45 degrees you won't be accidentally doing anything.

I've used DCS (and other games) with a DK2 and unless the CV1 (or Vive) is a spectacular leap in resolution and clarity, and from all reports I've read it's not, then I just can't see it being a practical way to fly in DCS. Or any flight sim, really. DCS in particular is heavily reliant on raw pixel density and that's VR's greatest problem right now.

I think it'll be at least one generation of headsets before you start to reach parity with monitors.

I resent that this is sometime true, it's more or less up to the mission maker as to if that happens or not.
Basically the more structure the mission has, the less dumb fuckery occurs. I'm now convinced that organisation is more or less always a good thing, people who say it's autistic just aren't mature enough to be flying imo.

I'm pretty busy this week but I have a few decent mission ideas that I'll try and get ready for this weekend.

Yes it is but some people don't have the patience for it, that bundy occupation mission we did a while back was a step in the right direction with flights in their own channels and whisper lists with a human ground forces controller/jtac but even then some people just couldn't contain themselves and had to constantly broadcast to all flights irrelevant shit flooding comms and turning it into a fucking mess.
>>
>>135269227
That sounds all around terrible. You can have "fun" ops with memes once in a while but I prefer actual missions.
Also the race part in particular is horrible. Any good tactical simulation should not allow this. I hate to say this but BMS does it really well. Rushing into the AO will get you killed everytime.

>>
>>135279017
Holy shit how are you going to fly with that? Besides i dont know anything about setting up controls for controllers. All i can tell you is that you need these buttons close at hand:

Second trigger detent
Weapon release
TQS comms switch up (VHF radio for IVC)
TMS up (lock target)
TMS down (unlock target)
DMS down (switch sensor of interest)
Radar cursor slew up/down/left/right

You'll have to use the keyboard for the rest, falcon has no modifiers I believe. Also this is the absolute minimum, you'll have to use keyboard shortcuts for everything else. I suggest you write down and memorise these. I have mine bound differently, so I don't know what they are.

Radar antenna elevate up/down
NWS/ AR DISC / MSL STEP key (nosewheel steering on ground, in air short push cycles selected missile rail, long push changes missile type) - default Shift /
SLAP SWITCH (fires a flare and a chaff)- default S
TMS right (cycle FCR contacts)

If youre intending to play BMS tonight, make sure you know how to fly with your controlset beforehand. I can offer marginal help before the event (I'm not a BMS expert myself) but by event time you need to be on point with your stuff.

I am not the one you are arguing with and yes A3 looks very good but it has similar issues as DCS.

The 32but tech is aged as shit and performance suffers because of it, just look at the MP. The maps are too small for any real fixed wing action. The ground vehicles could have had advanced FCS simulated already but the only thing they do is port shit from previous games. The list goes on but we shouldn't discuss this here since this is not the correct thread.
>>
>>135283661
To be clear I mean joystick modifier keys. You can use shift, control, and alt to your hearts content, but there's only one joystick shift key state.
>>
Let's go over the rules for bms ops
>no memes
>you must refer to your leader by his rank
>you must complete mandatory training first before ops
>you must write a 3 paragraph essay on how BMS is better than dcs
>any person who dosent use radio terms while communicating will be kicked unitll they learn how to speak correctly
>you must call out your landings and takeoffs or you will be kicked
>any person who asks for help with their plane will be kicked unitll they read the manual 3 times and have their parent sign off a checklist and email it to me
>ranks will be assigned and will be adjusted based on good or bad behaviour
>anyone who breaks the rules are going to be insta banned

It is due to 2 main reasons:

1) fuel energy is per unit mass, not volume, so we care how much matter is left, not how much space it takes

2) volume is dependent on temp, but mass is not.

Although they have tons of fancy settings if you really want to go all out with them, you can typically just treat SDBs like a regular JDAM. They're excellent for wiping out SAM sites once you take out the radar.

You can't see it in that webm but there was an explosion on the target aircraft after it was diving down for a few seconds. I'm not sure if the missile hit or not, since he continued to dive past the clouds and I lost contact.

You're an idiot if you think it's for the hours. It's for the experience and acrobatics you can do in the aircraft, I don't think you're going to get a dogfight experience in a cessna.

You also need zero flight experience, and you're actually controlling the aircraft.

DCS ops could easily be as organized as BMS ops. The CSAR mission on Friday looks to be promising because it's not a spur of the moment thing like all the rest of our ops are.

90% of the time we says OPS it mostly means join this server and come fuck around.

I'm excite.

I, for one, work my ass off every week and end up blowing half of my take-home furthering my training, but luckily for me I fucking love to fly.

It would be great to go to WOCS/flight school, though. I've been waiting over a year to get a slot, it's gotten ridiculous.

“On June 13, 1972, 60 miles northwest of Hanoi North Vietnam, my F-4E was hit by an atoll air to air missile. The jet immediately went out of control. A witness from another aircraft stated that “from the aft edge of the wing back there was one giant fireball." Pulling negative G's I used the lower handle to pull myself back into the seat and initiate the ejection. My WSO Lt. Tony Kito and I both ejected safely. One big thank you. Without Martin-Baker I would have missed my wonderful general and the shitposting it partakes in.” Captain Jack, USAF, Ejectee #2298

Plan A is to do it to beef up the WOCS application, Plan B is to keep going on the civie route and get my commercial cert, and an ATP down the road. Hopefully I'll hear something soon, I ETS from the guard this coming August, and even if I re-up I'm inching closer to ageing out of the program. Fuck me, right?

I tried track hat and it didn't work well for me. The damn thing refused to clip on to my headset and the PS3 camera kept falling of my monitor. I couldn't get it to calibrate properly either. This time I'm just going to bite the bullet and get a trackir. Or maybe I'll wait for the VR to have better pixel density. I've gone on for quite a while without any sort of headtracking,. What's 3 more years?

WHERES THE PROOF?
>>
>>135334357
>That's a $10 mount
Never mind a mount, my computer is angled awkwardly so even taping the damn thing to the bezel didn't help much. The room's light kept interfering with the PS3 eye's tracking. Could I get around it if I kept trying? Probably, but I'm fucking stupid and lazy so I'm just going to buy a track. I've wasted enough time trying to get it started as is, I don't think I can manage another go, I just want something that works.

The headset clip I bought was from the trackhat website, I didn't care for the hat taking up another USB slot.
>>
Okay so ops were cancelled because none of you NA dudes turned up at 0045 as posted, so we had a few flights fucking around with little substance, but some training came out of it.

Regarding ops, unfortunately it seems that demand for BMS ops is much lower than I expected.Currently it is most likely I will lower the frequency of organised BMS ops to one a week or one every two weeks.

ACMI tapes:

https://linx.li/oca.acmi
>>
>>135335763
Tape is inferior to an actual mount. My monitor has a weird shape too, but a mount for the pseye is still able to work since it's more a big clip than anything else. If light is a problem, take the 10 minutes to remove the IR filter and tape some film to the front of the camera. I literally have a lamp behind me and my pseye sees nothing of it.
>>
>>135336507
If you upload a binding profile for the 3d pro I'll download BMS and learn it. As it is, DCS has a lower barrier for entry so I'm spending my training hours there.
>>
>>135335356
proofs?
>>
>>135336740
Setting up the controls is actually much easier I expected. Hop into the /simg/ TS and I'll help you out.
>>
>>135336740
I don't own a 3d pro. Besides, setting up the stick takes around 20-30 minutes max. Refer to >>135282416. But I'll grant you, BMS has a far steeper learning curve.

Track IR is affected even more by light than a ps3 eye cam fyi
>>
>>135336554
I wish I had this conversation before I sent everything back. As for the IR filter, according to the webpage, it was already removed, it still kept trying to track the lights behind me. Thanks for the help anyway, I might just try to DIY something myself.

>>135337854
I'm not getting the trackir at this point. If I can't DIY a proper headtracking solution, I'm just going to wait for VR to get better.
>>
>>135338590
Move your lights so they bounce off of walls and aren't in the FOV of the camera, maybe put a shade over them and that might be enough
>>
>>135338590
Removing the IR filter will make the camera more sensitive to the lights. The point is, however, that you add a visible filter (exposed film) to the front of the camera. This new filter will preferentially block what's coming from your ambient surrounding without cutting down on the intensity of your IR LEDs (either on your track clip, hat, or IR source you have shining on your face from near your camera). When I first tried it out, my track clip LEDs looked really weak compared to the background lamp. After removing the IR filter and adding my own visible filter, the reverse is true and head tracking working flawlessly.
>>
