I think I can carry 108 KG with a Goldfish and Snowflake, so that allows for a lot of extra shit. I can easily have loot and some rare guns/suits and still make it back to base.

I don't see it as a problem early game unless you're of a faction who is hostile to most others and cannot use traders. There are lots of traders to get rid of junk at. Even as Monolith with one trader I had no problems.

Here's a bunch near conquered Skadovsk, a few zombies were further in.

CoC files, then the patch files, then OWR except its script/configs folders, then the patch 1.4 files for OWR.

Then I installed all the small mods over that with care that there is no overwrite. There were none except some textures that I chose individually for each conflict.

I had no crash for at least 1h gameplay and then it crashed on me.

I've cracked how to make new bumpmaps with Paint.NET and Gimp, so I'm making custom bumpmaps for NPC skins.

They need work, though. I know how the specular maps that serve as base for the normalmap are made, but it's a pain in the ass getting them right.

It's easier to just autogenerate normalmaps from the new skins.

Thing is that all skins with camo came out particularly bumpy because that's not the proper way to make them.

Would love to know how Argus made his NPC bumpmaps.

Autogenerated bumpmaps straight from the skin always have these flaws, even with those tools. The proper way to make normalmaps, in all those programs, is to start from a proper grayscale specular.

To be honest, the bumpmaps I've made are not that off from the bumpmaps made by GSC. Only a handful of them were made from edited specular maps, and the rest (particularly monster skins) were probably autogenerated with the NVidia tools.

I think the reason mine come out particularly bumpy compared to vanilla bumpmaps is the noise/sharpness of the normalmap plug in I'm using.

Early tests indicate that applying gaussian blur on the finished custom bumpmaps get them closer to the default ones.

Seems like if you take out some enemy fortifications they don't come back in CoC, I took out the Freedom checkpoint to the Radar at Army Warehouses a few days back and when I went there now I saw only Monolith patrolling.

Actually, no. Each time I download a mod, and see the weapon bloat it comes with I die a little inside.

But lately I've been starting bloating my personal mod, and I'm not exactly sure why.

I guess I want to see how many items I can stuff in the vanilla ui_icon_equipment before I got to increase the canvas size.

Made those food items just because I know Lost Alpha had them, and I was checking the vanilla prop items and found the meshes.

My own modified ZRP.

Available new weapons: Shortened TOZ-34, Full TOZ-66, Prototype FN-F2000, FN P90, PKM, AKMS, SVU-A. Plus some uniques from Call of Pripyat (Wolfhound's USP, Alpine, Tide).

None have been implemented in-game yet, will add them to traders to be sold after finishing the game.

The artifacts are all the COP artifacts, some with their own properties, others upgrades to vanilla artifact properties. The names are all shamelessly stolen from Lost Alpha because I couldn't bother to come up with new names.

Will add them to anomaly spawn rates once I determine how rare I want them to be.

The food items all restore more satiety and health than vanilla food items. They cost slightly more, but all have better weight/benefit ratios.

They'll only be available through traders (Barkeep and Sid only, probably).

In a lot of the weapon mods i play, i barely use half of the weapons, since i find new ones so quick.

Then again, more items/gear adds variety to the game.

Well, I did have to add 5.7x28mm for the P90, 7.62x39mm for the AKMS, the 7.62x54mmR for the PKM and restored the 9x18mm PBP (though still haven't made any slav weapon use them).

And I've been giving thought to making .50 ammo for the Desert Eagle. What better way to waste time than making an expensive, trader-only ammo type for a relatively rare weapon I never actually use when I actually get my hands on it.

Been a very long time since I've played stalker. I'm looking for a really brutal sandbox-y experience where I can have varied games with generally very low life-expectancy. Dynamic missions would be fantastic too. I remember liking all the games for their own reasons, but I don't remember much about the individual mods.

It looks like my options are probably CoC, Faction War, DMM and Echo of Chernobyl 2. Any recommendations among those, or should I try them all out? Are there any other good freeplay mods I should be aware of?

Also, is there anything I can combine with those four to make things more, uh, dynamic? Like can Massive Simulation Overhaul work alongside CoC?

I'd recommend CoC with the RC patch 4.1, it's quite good, especially with Arsenal Overhaul or STCOP Weapon Pack. Just make sure you follow the install instructions closely and read the last page of the comments for a quick fix on quest completion. If you like, Warfare should also be updated for the RC, and provides a Clear Sky-esque faction war on a massive scale (although it is a bit buggy, still being worked on)

The Faction War for Clear Sky is also pretty great, despite having many of the frustrating bugs inherent in Clear Sky's faction war system. The ranking/leveling system is interesting and links to what kind of items traders will sell you (mostly expensive suits/guns)

DMM:AE and Echo of Chernobyl are basically bare-bones freeplay, but EoC2 does have pretty amazing graphics.

MSO isn't compatible with CoC, but CoC is quite dynamic already. Quests are somewhat minimal, but pretty fun anyways. Apparently there's a small storyline that you can choose to follow but I haven't delved into it at all.

Can't really help you there unless you can add them yourself. AMK: AE comes just with the weapons from AA 2.1. LURK's weapon variety is definitely nice (except for the ridiculous recoil), but yeah it's not compatible with AMK and the visuals are pretty shitty IMO

With all Steam games, when you install the game you have to update it to the latest version. At that point, if you turn off automatic updates for that game and there are no online play shenanigans at work, Steam doesn't give a flying fuck what you do to it until you turn updates back on or validate the cache.

In other words, yes, but you have to install, update, then rollback, which most people consider a bigger hassle I guess.

Higher dificulties reduce ammo damage slightly, and makes more NPC shots actually hit you.

You hit or not depending on how good your ammo spread is and how good you aim is. Spraying in auto deals less damage than accurate, timed bursts or fast single shots.

SGM adds quite a bit of new content, the latest merge mod is pretty good. you could try a weapon mod like STCoP or AO.
Maybe Misery if that's your style.

Steam doesn't update unless there's a new update available, which there basically never is for this game. There no negative at all to playing the steam version. The drag and drop downgraders in the repo make it trivial to go from 1.0006 to any version.

Most of what's written in this thread about the steam version being hard to use is pure ignorance and folk lore being repeated - a meme in other words. Buy the steam version of you want to, it's as good as any other
