I don't hate the ending(s). I didn't expect this game to have a happy ending anyway. What really bothers me is the lack of proper explanation for a lot of things and overall lack of content in EP5. But I can live with that.
Michel's bullshit about "Max isn't really a good person" doesn't count. If this was his "message" then he forgot to actually put it in the game (and it's fine, we don't need something like this). I'm only getting two "messages" from the ending:
1. You can't fix absolutely everything, no matter how hard you try. This sucks. And it doesn't automatically mean that you did something "bad".
2. One person can be more important for someone than the whole city of even the world. When Chloe decided to sacrifice herself for the future of Max and Arcadia Bay, I actually realized that I can't do this.
So yeah, I chose the Bae ending and I'm glad that it exists, despite all the flaws of EP5.

After the funeral, Max is going to struggle to talk to people and keep this facade that the two never reconnected. When she slips up in conversation and mentions things that never happened?

Since the butterfly photo is the version she took AFTER she already saw Chloe get shot and rewound time. Auto-pilot Max will be a version of herself that: saw Chloe die, rewound to the classroom, fucked about with time in the classroom, assumed she'd be able to save 'the girl in the bathroom', only to suddenly lose consciousness at the critical moment and wake up to Chloe bleeding out on the floor. Too late to do anything. Can't rewind back because she was unconscious. Possibly even lost her powers.

Which makes me think: That rewind was different because not only was time reversed, it threw Max backwards as well. To when she was in the classroom.
That was the first time she rewound and she had no control, maybe because of that moment of panic she used the rewind to an extent that she broke it. And that's what caused the storm. If she rewound and saved Chloe, but did it in a controlled manner that didn't also move herself, then it would have been fine.

Fate is usually meant with negative or tragic consequences. As in the "fate spinner" (the universe) forces the will that Chloe has to die.
Destiny, on the other hand, is how the events have played out, i.e. with the protagonist's influence.
It's Max' destiny to save Chloe. Therefore BAE = fulfilling Max' destiny, BAY = leaving Chloe to succumb to her tragic fate.

Their is a very famous french film of called the passion of joan of arc, you can imagine how that one ends. Rules of the game ends with one of the main characters being shot.
