So an untricked HMS benefits more from 25 skl, while a tricked one benefits more from 25 arcane.

Yes, based on which form you prefer.
Actually looking at the guide scans, it seems that strength after 25 doesn't scale as well as skl (or arc in tricked mode) before 25. So the actual optimal might be something like 50/25/25.
Unfortunately this'd put you at an obscene level, and 25/25/25 would basically be optimal for absolutely nothing except the HMS itself, so 50/25/min or 50/min/25 is probably your best bet if you want the build to use literally any other possible weapon.

Just to add, 50/25 is generally preferred because it'll be optimal for every single str-leaning quality weapon, of which there are many. The untricked version of the HMS, which has that godlike R2 thrust, will get the most out of this and the tricked form will be almost identical in terms of damage output (only slightly less) for all but the R2 projectiles when compared to a more arc-focused build.
There's pretty much no weapon in the game besides the HMS that actually benefits from having both strength and arc (I think boomhammer, tonitrus and wheel are the only ones, so 50/-/25 will basically be HMS-only. The difference in damage on most attacks will be marginal so this is pretty much only for maximizing the tricked R2 damage.

2nd slot setup spell. Use whenever you've got space to set up combos with other things. Put ACB in the 1st slot of your personal effects and use it occasionally in combination with exec gloves when you know your opponent is too passive to go in but doesn't have the space to run.
2nd personal effects slot for OHB. Pop at your leisure if you think it'll make a difference
last personal effects slot for beast roar, so you can quickly bring up the menu, tap left and click to use it when the chance to knock someone off a death drop arises.
Tawny Tinitruss isn't very useful so I don't bother including it in quicklsots. If you really wanted to, put it after brew, before auger and use it for bad approaches, like people who try running attacks or habitually dodge directly forward/backwards

The strength weapons in bb are pretty conservative. The largest thing you slam around is the kirkhammer, and it's pretty small compared to most strength weapons in souls games. They definitely tried to be a little more grounded with the size of objects you bludgeon things with, which naturally means that it's not as ridiculously fun to bludgeon.
Plus for a game where dodging is abnormally fast, covers a large distance and takes practically no stamina, weapons that swing as slowly as a souls game and take as much stamina just don't seem to gel. Slowing your game down by 50% for the same approximate damage per hit as a saw isn't really my ideal way of playing, especially when the 'hyperarmor' in this game is so underwhelming.

I'm having trouble deciding on a build for my first full run of the game (I played a chunk when it came out but am only now going back to it).
I really like Arcane and the Burial Blade/Blade of Mercy but while it can work it doesn't work that well and it's not like I'll have either of those weapons for the majority of the game.
I'm starting to think I should go Strength and Arcane for the wealth of options including Tonitrus and Moonlight... I am kind of tempted to go Arcane into FULL BROCCOLI but I think I actually would want more variety.
Any recommendations? Beast Cutter seems pretty sick considering I liked the Threaded Cane for Skill based weapons.
