The translations are mangled enough that it's kind of hard to recognize the choices until you're presented with them, if you're worried about spoilers (although if you wanted a spoiler free run you'd of course be doing this without a guide).
The alignment scale is from 100 to -100, and to get the Neutral ending you must end up somewhere between +8 and -8 (it's a very narrow path). If you want to be absolutely sure, just keep track of your current alignment on a notepad and update it with every choice.
Doing sidequests is completely optional AFAIK, although many offer alignment choices that can help you fine tune things. Note that there are a few story sequences which give forced alignment choices, and near the end of the game you are forced to make a number of Lawful choices, so you probably want to be just slightly Chaos before that.

You can play P3 and P4 at any time. P3 has some references to the older games though.
You'll want to start with Persona 1, then P2: Innocent Sin, and then P2: Eternal Punishment. They're more linked together than the other games, with returning characters and such.

the writing is very repetitive and very self-referential and it has problems maintaining a consistent tone
that said the story is interesting and it plays around with jrpg conventions a bit, but it's nothing groundbreaking
if you're looking for SMT inspired combat there isn't really much; the negotiation aspect of battle just boils down to finding the right dialog choice for every monster, then using it every time

I hated it. When I first saw it I honestly thought it was that Homestuck game they raised a billion dollars for a few years back. It's basically SMT for the tumblr special snowflakes generation, and is every bit as smug and self referential as that implies. It just cannot get over how clever it finds itself.
That kind of thing works for some people but nothing makes me angrier in fiction than that attitude in presentation.

It takes all its inspiration (and most of the ideas it conveys) from Earthbound, not SMT.
It's alright, though it's basically a glorified VN with how tacked on the gameplay outside of three or four fights, I'd actually compare it to The Order 1886.
If you're alright with that then give it a shot. The story is alright and the meta concepts are somewhat well executed. The endings are all awful, however.

nothing like SMT desu. more about good vs EEEEVVIL!! than law vs hoy. the ACT to end a battle peacefully is always the same too.
in general its meant to be a jolly, comedic experience. going into it expecting something serious or deep will leave you dissatisfied.
it doesn't help that the fanbase is autistic and does nothing BUT look at it as a serious and deep game.
