Two points:
1. Approaching 1million is important. People will donate to round it up, and they'll donate en masse. Since the tracker AND the stream have delay, you will see it minutes after it happens.
2. Announcing all these big donations make them common. Raising the average amount donated will influence the next donations (people will adjust their donations towards that number unconsciously). This also works for twitch channel that display the max donor fyi.
This is known as anchor biais, which has application both in games and finance.

However I don't think it's that important since they didn't have big sponsors donation this year like last year bundle.
Viewers growth is more important long-term imo, it allows them to expand the venue for the next years and enables new ways of raising money (people talked about esports and stadium and honestly I wouldn't be surprised by it).
