im pretty sure you can purchase great magic weapon from the dude in the boat area. use 2 great soul arrows and 2 heavy arrows, the dull ember should on the ledge before the smeter demon fight about 50 paces back on the ledge leading up to the allone captain that spams at you when you are on the bridge. as for staff, upgrade the starter to about +5 atleast as the staff the one dude sells im pretty sure takes faith too. you will find a better one later. as for armor, if you have the weight to spare, use the allone knight armor to keep your fire def up. if you have sotfs, i have no idea where the dull ember is, but it still applies.

Firstly, I at least didn't get GMW before I fought the Old Iron King. Honestly I just used a bunch of soul arrows and spears from the little side platform but it doesn't sound like you have enough damage or casts for that, which is fine. That being the case, here's how to get magic weapons:
>find/farm a Faintstone
>unlock McDuff (in the Lost Bastille; coming from the Tower Apart bonfire, go through the tower where you meet Lucatiel, kill the mummy dude at the top of the flight of stairs, then kick the barrel he's guarding down the stairs and it'll blow up the cracked wall and get you another bonfire and the blacksmith)

>get him to infuse your shit
>upgrade your infused shit

Honestly even if you could beat OIK with just spells you should get a +10 anyway.
The Bone Staff is better for hexes, but worse for sorceries than your default staff, so you probably shouldn't use it and upgrade your default instead.
You find your next good staff, the Staff of Wisdom in Brightrock, connected to Shaded Ruins, so if you want a better staff you should go there next, so, yes, Shaded Woods.

60k SM sounds really really low de su, which is probably why you're not seeing many phantoms or much orange.
Some areas you can't put signs down. Try putting it in one of your item slots and walking around and see if it lights up. Or just try restarting and making sure you're online.
Personally I prefer swords but if maces are your thing the magic mace means you don't have to bother with McDuff or the Faintstone so I guess that's handy, though really you should unlock him anyways.

You can get a Faintstone behind one of the contraption doors in the Doors of Pharros (you should probably check the wiki to find which door, there's a lot of bogus ones).
The weapon is mostly a preference thing, but I use the longsword. It's got low stat requirements, a top tier moveset, and a good weight so if you don't know I'd suggest that one.
I'm pretty sure that that bit of the Keep is optional, to get the loot at the top with the three archers. Try not climbing the ladder in the room with the platforms. Also, in the room with the six bull heads, check the walls thoroughly.

There's a chest in the Doors of Pharros with a Faintstone in it. It's the contraption in the room with the long ladder, on the upper level. The ones on the ground floor just give you more enemies.

I'm not sure, sorry, I don't remember the Keep so well. What I mean is, going from the bonfire you get after Smelter, you go right, over the bridge with the knight and the ironclad on it, into the room with the lever right in front of you, yes? So you go through that room, don't climb the ladder and instead go past the three bulls and the one big bull on the bit that's on your right as you enter. There's a door on this bit leading to some stairs, which if I understand right is the area you're trying to jump down to with all the platforms.
As for SL, I have no idea to tell you the truth. I always end up massively overlevelled because of how I play (as in, poorly), so you're gonna have to find that one out for yourself.

Hey just got this game and haven't done anything to the Bell Keeper yet but he's in the way a lot of the time.

Over a year ago, I used to be a whimpy, depressed, emo git.
Then I played Dark Souls II. There's a line in the DLCs that is absolutely fucking relevant to our every day life:
"For now, seek strength. The rest will follow."
I've been doing bodyweight workout for approx. a year now, and it's completely taken away my depression. I'm motivated to gain strength in other ways, especially mentally. This is the best goddamn lifehack advice anyone could ever tell you. The main character in the game is stuck in this depressing state, seemingly completely devoid of hope, no way to fix anything. But he's told to seek strength, and the rest will fall into place. As far as the game's concerned, we're left to speculate how that happens, what the Undead does after the ending cinematic of choice, but in life it's the same thing. The whole game's an allusion to depression. You're never going to get any useful tip that will pull you out of that depression. Except for the advice to become stronger. I did that, and things are falling into place now. One by one things are getting better, and it all started with me literally seeking strength via working out seriously. That lead to me feeling more energetic, that lead to regaining motivation, that lead to rejoining the social scene, etc. etc. etc.
Just another reason why DaS II is one of my favorite games ever. This fucking game saved me, /dsg/.
