Kind of, they're the only good missile system that hits the size of ships they were meant for good.
IIRC, HAM's despite being a cruiser platform have the hardest time hitting other cruisers because they have poor explosion radius and explosion velocity, HML's are a little better but do literally jack shit DPS

The same goes with torps, unless its Torpedos from a Stealth Bomber, Torps in general have great DPS but such little of it actually gets applied to another ship that your DPS goes straight to hell, also they have extremely short range for some reason, a stealth bomber's torps can get out to 50+ IIRC but a battleship torpedo barely touches 30km. Most battleships that use missiles stop at cruiser missiles because cruise missiles hit really good and do good DPS as well, Rapid heavies are a new thing but only for battleships that need to shit on cruisers

Coming back after a few years. Have a main with a broad and decent-to-good skillset apart from caps. Is there anything I could get involved with these days that could earn me 1-2 PLEX a month either semi-afk or with a relatively small time investment?
I used to keep two accounts afloat with station trading, but I see the price of PLEX has continued to rise so I'm not sure I could manage even one now. I'd be willing to throw my main into a full-fledged profit building activity even if it meant training up an alt for the random putzing around high, low and w-space I like to do.

with about 6b worth of orders i was seeing enough profit in region trading to plex. keep plowing your profits back in and finding more things to trade and profit grows pretty fast from there.
keep in mind that's like, off the cuff numbers from two months ago. don't take it as gospel. right now i'm still coasting on sub and reinvesting; i'm up to 12b.

Probably one of two things: set up region-wide (very low) buy orders and occasionally get it all hauled to a hub, profiting off of lazy people who can't be assed to haul stuff themselves, or comparing prices across region borders and profiting whenever a disparity shows up.
Both are pretty standard trading tactics.

the less you have to do yourself the faster you make money
this is of course just one strategy; going into more markets is an excellent way to increase profits when you don't feel like investing more money or training more skills

Going into more (or just different) markets is also something I highly recommend to any traders just because parking yourself in Jita is a surefire way to get burnt out in no time, even without all the lag and bullshit that goes on in that system.
Other hubs, regions and strategies may be slower, but there's less competition, so you can do better with less skill, opportunities present themselves more clearly, and you may even wind up making MORE profit than if you operated exclusively in the biggest hubs.
Hell, some of the most successful traders operate exclusively by creating, manipulating and exploiting microhubs that form near fights, chokepoints and occupations. If someone's in the middle of a war, needs a tackle ship, and doesn't have one, they aren't going to look twice at what you're charging for a rifter and a scram if it's the only nearby option.

I like running frostlines in carebear nullsec. it amuses me because they're docked up afraid of me ratting. also most nullsec people don't understand what deadspace plexes are. just burn or mjd off, get tackled, watch as their fleet warps to them and lands hundreds of km away and can't do anything.

On day 5 of my 21day trial, got 200m isk (Which I have made in the first 2 days) doing Defensive Plexing then I got kinda bored of staying afk. Did Career Agent Missions, Applied for Eve University. Dont know much about the game though

the thing about plexing your trial is you don't really get to change your mind halfway through because the time spent training skills is very precious and starting to do something else in the middle because you're bored is inefficient. going to plex with trade? start training trade skills and don't stop. going to explore? start training archeology and cloak and don't stop.
for you, now, on this account - if you followed the skills shown in the pasta for that catalyst you should be close to the damage needed for oplexing, which is faster money. if you are completely done with fw plexing, you still have time to train for null/wh relic/data exploration for this trial. pic related for key skills, link related for technique and ships: all-out.github.io/guides/exploration-relic-data

people say data and relic sites. for that you need to train probing skills, they're called astrometrics, and astrometric something. you'd need whatever the skills are to use analyzers, and probably cloaking and microwarpdrives. then you go fit up a cheap astrometrics frigate, leave all your valuables behind and go wormholing. I'm sure you can find guides. you can see some interesting places and there's no combat.

if you have 200m liquid already, you can afford to lose forty (40) t1 exploration frigates. that's a lot of frigates. before you lose 40 frigates, you are almost surely going to make it back safely with at least some loot from at least some of your trips. the reward is completely worth the risk.
