G.U.N. contracted him to make the ultimate weapon. Gerald wanted to make a cure. He thought that by creating an organism immune to disease, he could accomplish both.

Biolizard was an inefficient and unintelligent failure, so it was pretty much his only chance.

Probably because he was getting his funding in order to develop weaponry for G.U.N. Project Shadow, from G.U.N.'s perspective, was more of a super-soldier thing, whereas Gerald was using to research a cure for N.I.D.S.

Weapon project for G.U.N. Along with the Chaos Drives, ties into Gerald's research of the Chaos Emeralds, which was also utilized for Project Shadow (even before Black Doom showed up, since the Biolizard is also capable of Chaos Control).

I've got a couple ideas. One, the more likely, he was given remote access to the ARK's systems in order to complete Project Shadow. G.U.N. had him working on it for a while before he found out Maria died, and he didn't snap until after that. Alternatively, he had some other insider upload a program for him after he was executed.

They probably at least thought they knew less than they wanted to. I think it was the Black Doom deal. For one thing, they likely learned of it from Abe Tower, so all they knew was Gerald was talking with a potentially dangerous alien. General paranoia would lead to them thinking Gerald might be planning to use Project Shadow to overthrow them.

He likely learned from Black Doom that he was exceedingly long-lived - I imagine Doom bragged about how many times his comet swung bySonic's World- and concluded Black Arm DNA could be useful in developing the Ultimate Lifeform. Even more so if he also knew about how adept Doom was at using Chaos energy.

Black Comet likely made contact with ARK as it was passing by, or vice versa.

For all we know he was a professor of archaeology. He at least dabble in researching ancient cultures, likely as part of his Chaos Emerald study, which would explain why he researched ancient echidnas. I think Eggman also learned about Chaos from Gerald's diary, and only went to Shadow after Chaos didn't work out.

It's entirely possible that there was a long enough period of time between the raid gunning down Maria and capturing Gerald that he realized Maria was dead (possibly even saw it first-hand on security camera), snapped, and programmed in the "go fuck yourself humanity" program before the troops got to him. Would explain why he would have been separated from his grand-daughter.

The ability for Sonic to move slowly is one that always comes to mind, because it's the main thing I'd want implemented into Boost gameplay. If you can actually stop and move around without suddenly blasting off, then you can do platforming without having to switch to 2D.
I also liked how fast homing attack was, but admittedly the lock-on delay is better in the long run.

I'm baffled at their stuff, but not for the right reasons. I'm a complete sucker for on model, high quality Sonic stuff. Bonus point for big/giant size if it's not just art. Honestly, the fact is, with a small few exceptions, the large majority of Pendered characters either don't belong to Penders himself, or if they do, they wouldn't fit the comic as it is now. Think about the characters Penders created. How many of them do you honestly think would fit the current comic? The majority of the characters people miss weren't even made by Penders himself. Off the top of my head, the characters that Penders "made" that people miss are

I don't even necessarily care about the characters. There are just concepts I liked, as well as the DEEPEST LORE, at least once Ian cleaned it up.
Really, the biggest thing that bugs me are the little things that logically he should have no claim to, but since they had to settle instead of actually taking him to court we won't get. Like Scourge or Shard, but what's worst is the Nocturnus. I'm a Knuxfag and I liked the Dark Legion, and since the Nocturnus are an homage to them they'd be a decent replacement. Nocturnus were a rival echidna clan to the Knuckles clan. Between the two of them there was always a constant struggle for dominance. Pachacamac going after the Chaos Emeralds was a bid to finally defeat the Nocturnus. Of course, we know how that turned out. After the Knuckles clan was essentially wiped out, the Nocturnus were set to takeover everything, but then a mystery, tentacley inter-dimensional being snatched them up and threw them in the Twilight Cage, along with other races who totally almost took over their worlds. The Nocturnus were already more tech-focused than the Knuckles - they're the Fourth Great Civilization who invented Gizoids - and so they quickly adapted the advanced tech of their alien neighbors and took over the cage, though if I recall right their rule of the cage wasn't super strong and more just no one really bothering to fight because whatever we're all stuck in here together.
In any case that gave them time to work on figuring out a way to escape. They send a team through to get the Master Emerald to make a stronger link, and that's basically where the game plot itself comes in. So, they're nothing too inventive from a story perspective, but they're at least a competently written version of the Legion, and they get points for being a whole separate nation and not just followers of one of Knuckles' distant relatives.
Shade, likewise, is a better written Julie-Su, since her reasons for leaving the Nocturnus are because their leader actually betrays her and what she thought their ideals were. Though she joins the party fairly late, so she doesn't get a ton of development.
