The Bolt Action Pipe Rifle is the best there is for pipe tier weapons. You can mod it to take .50 cal rounds at level fucking 13. Sure you wont have the ammo for it but christ I was shocked at my pipe snipers effectiveness.

There is literally no reason to do it. It's simply Hollywood suits trying to be edgy and shit. I'm a fan of those books. If the character in the books were black, I'd want him to be black. If his race were ambiguous in the books I wouldn't care. However, he is white in the books. They're tossing the source material in the bin to pander to people who never read the books. Like I said, not taking a side, but if changing his race could affect the plot in some major way, and potentially even change some of the themes or messages of the novel into messages or themes that disregard or even out right go against those in the novel, then I could see how fans of the series could be upset by it.
