I think you're going to take this thread a negative direction toward /soc/. Were we ever to do a hangout or get together, I think it would have to be something heavily topical like a game jam or something so that it doesn't suck. I really liked Cupid. The art isn't always perfect, but I think there's a lot to be learned from the CGs: firstly, they draw characters faces well from every angle, which isn't common and secondly they compose them well and don't just fill everything with details because why not, they do leave backgrounds empty if it helps the scene. It might have been inspired by lack of time or something, but I realised I was getting too hung up about drawing backgrounds on every single CG, when some look better with lights and abstract shapes.

3-4 hours a route is accurate. Generally, if you are reading 50k in 1-2, there are either a lot of choices and you aren't seeing most of the story or you're skimming for the art and not really paying too much attention. The average reading rate is 200wpm, which is 12,000 words per hour. Estimate the core of the story is about 45k and you end up with 3-4 hours per route and probably 6 hrs for the whole thing.
There are outliers, naturally, but this is for the average reader.

Straight wordcount doesn't always map directly to reading time. At the least, you have to take branching, animations, and words-per-page into account. Not to mention that reading time varies drastically from person to person. Calling 50K "1-2 hours" is silly. Are there people who can clear it that fast? Yes, but they're quite rare, and/or people who are bored as shit with the story and spacing ahead without trying to read all the words.
The usual lazy ballpark is 20K to an hour, though again, it varies a lot. So 4-6 as an estimate would be completely unremarkable, and 5-8 isn't unbelievable if there's a lot of animation and other slowdowns.

I'm going to use eden* as an example. The all ages version has the MC in love with one girl, but has close friendships to the other female characters. The adult version though, has unlockable ero scenes that don't take place in the story, just what if scenarios. That way it's still a pure love story, but can have ero scenes with their favorite female characters, which is more of what I was suggesting.

Hmm, well I am not doing it in my immediate VN I plan to include it in a future VN. The point of the sex scenes is that the nature of the relationship changes at that point. I have always thought that sex in a VN can serve as a really important function-- namely, it underscores the seriousness and irrevocability of the romance/action.
One thing that I feel separates VN from other media is the general lack of blue-balling. I see VN as the opposite of series that promise, but postpone delivering as much as possible (i.e. Nisekoi, romances in shounen, long drawn out romances generally). VN interested me because it departed from that junk, largely because by the end of the route the characters would be in a confirmed sexual relationship and the logic of the story would have to account for that. For me, VNs were an escape from all of the romances that were eternally teased, but never delivered on. They were the opposite of stupid harem shows that always ended with a return to status quo, or with some sort of "sort of" kiss/confession that was later taken back.
You cannot take back fucking someone, so it's a commitment from the author that the matter of the relationship is going to be addressed.
Plus, I have some really fun ideas for sex scenes. I also want to implement sprites with hickeys on them (haven't seen that before).

Really? Movies include unnecessary sex scenes all the time, and don't people love that! Though, since movies are meant to appeal to more people, since they cost so much, they'll only show people's faces or whatever. VNs are usually more explicit about it, and sure, you can say it's to show how much the relationship between the two characters has changed, and sometimes I think H scenes can add to the story/characterization and be meaningful, I think they're mostly included to draw in horny guys. Often, H scenes in moege aren't important whatsoever, and they're usually filled with repetitive writing that lasts way too long, weird similes, and unappealing sound effects that sound like noodles being squished around in a cup. I'm not a fan of H scenes for the sake of H scenes in VNs, and I usually just skip them because I don't think they're very good...
I just don't understand the logic of needing to see a H scene to know the characters are actually together, it shouldn't be the most important part of a relationship, but shrugs everybody has different opinions on this and people attach difference amounts of importance to different things.

There's a reason most sex scenes have the characters losing their virginities to each other, because it's supposed to be special and all that. Then they get cute and flirty and intimate. As for them looking sexy, men are visual creatures. Do you want them to look ugly or what? The MC obviously doesn't have a big focus because he's supposed to be a stand in for you, and most straight men don't enjoy looking at another man's sweaty naked body.

Might have been an overestimation on my part, not sure. I typically assume that people read at around 15,000-18,000 words per hour, and when sprite transitions and directing gets factored in, that might become a little longer. I'm also a very slow reader. Something like Toko takes me about two hours instead of one, for example. Still, I think the estimation is rather fiat, though I can definitely see people finishing it in four, three, or even two hours if they're a speed demon.
We're still discussing a price, But it's going to be between $7-$10. My guess is $9.99, as that's what most of the medium-length or kinetic titles Sekai publishes are priced at (i.e. Love at First Sight, most Winged Cloud titles). That's not set in stone, though. We'll be discussing price and stuff more as release gets closer.

I'm not really sure if I can add much more to the discussion that's taken place. The story very much focuses on Amber and Marina's relationship. The h-scenes in the 18+ version are there less for eroticism and more for added depth and character building. I really am appreciative that people like the designs of other characters enough that they'd like to romance them, but it just wouldn't fit into HB.

The setting isn't very wacky and pretty grounded in reality, but Mariah, Joseph and Tess are pretty out there characters, which is pointed out by Amber. The side characters, especially the trio, are supposed to be a bit wacky. We wanted a very slight "wonderland" approach. Nothing outlandish, but there's a detachment between Amber and Marina and everyone else.

I'm sorry you don't like the BGs. Personally, I think Badriel is doing a pretty good job with them. However, he typically does cityscapes and villages, so maybe it's throwing him off a little? Myuto may have designed the trio, but Shiyun is still doing their sprites, as well as everyone else's.
