You get about 150 stars a week logging in daily, 250 after 60 days, and 500 at 100 days. You also get stars for songs:
Full Combo on Pro or Master is 50 per song
S Score on Master is 50 per song
1 Master Clear is 50 per song, and you get 250 once you've cleared that song 100 times
In addition you get stars for some commus, so use all your idols to raise their affection and awaken them for stars, plus get them fans for milestone commus for stars. Normals give 25 stars on awakening, Rares and up are 50 for awakening. Milestone commus are all 25 stars.
Lastly, participating in events will get you a lot of free stars and there are occasional login campaigns, which is actually on currently. It's why you got an extra 250 stars today. So you can totally play this free, though after awhile you'll mostly be relying on events for stars. What I do, and a lot of others do as well, is to pay for some stars (the game differentiates between ones you got free and ones you bought) and do the once-a-day roll that takes paid stars, but they only cost 60 instead of 250. Also note that the game uses free stars first when applicable. Don't spend stars upgrading furniture. You can use stars to increase inventory space for idols (50 for 5)and for room decorations(25 for 25), 50 to continue a song if you fail, and 50 to restore your stamina. That should be everything you need to know regarding Star Jewels.
