Before Episode 5's release:
>Lol Mari's theories're shitty. It's way more than shitty to become true
>Chloe has to die thing doesn't make sense.Don't worry they will come with unpredictable story
>We're gonna learn everything about Max's powers,Rachel and Prescotts even Nathan, spirit animals..
>Jefferson knows about Max's powers
>Nathan,Frank,David or Samuel's gonna save us
>Victoria's with Max,she'll save her
>(After seeing Cemetery scene from leaks) I'm sure it'll be Williams,Rachel's or Kate's grave.
>Rachel's the doe and Butterfly and probably we'll see her in Max's dream
>Blue Jay's Chloe

After Episode 5's release:
>Mari's shitty cliche theory became right
>We visited the SF art gallery for 3 seconds. FOR 3 DAMN SECONDS
>Jefferson became a silly bad guy from Disney
>David came to save us.He's a former-soldier but he can't even fight, just listens teenager's orders. Even he doesn't know she has some time travel powers.
>Victoria's with us in the dark room.Laying there and we can talk her or not.Just it.
>Nathan get killed,Victoria too
>Nathan knew something about the storm but they cut it.
>Warren explained Max's powers(!) (thanks warryn) We found out her power causes/related with Chaos Theory and storm. It's not like we didn't know or something.
>Storm is only coming for Bay because Chloe lives in there but Max's the one who keep changes the time
>Prescotts story erased.Nobody even mention their name.
>Rachel's story fucked too.She isn't doe,or butterfly,bluejay or even shit.
>Spirit animals thing died.Blue Butterfly's Chloe just it.
>Chloe dies again in one of endings (unpredictable) It gives you a lesson: You shouldn't have used your power. And you shouldn't play this game. Now erase your choices and cry like a bitch.
>Chloe has to die thing comes true, Cemetery scene explained with that.
>The other ending's short but it's less cliché than other. We saved Chloe, storm's hit the town and gone. That's it.
>Epilogue: Use ur imaginations:)muh budget

However many problems it had in it's writing, Heavy Rain is one game that came close. Aside from the handwaved and annoying 'whoops, you died' endings, each ending takes player actions into account to deliver a pretty decent character arc.

Heavy Rain spoilers:
If Ethan was imprisoned under suspicion of his son Sean's kidnapping and Sean survives, the ending shows him being released and reunited with him. Metaphorically, he's being exonerated for the accidental death of his other son Jason, and released from the guilt he'd carried ever since.
If he saved Sean himself, the universe does him one better and leaves him a few steps further down the same arc, starting a new life with his son on a positive note.

If Sean dies while Ethan is in jail, he is framed for the murder and kills himself - the opposite of the above exoneration. If he's not in jail, he still kills himself out of guilt over the failure, the player's failure.

Whatever happens, where he ends up is focused entirely on the guilt complex that drives his actions throughout the entire game, and sees it through as some form of triumph or tragedy depending on the events of the game. And they keep it simple - there are like 10 variations, but it ultimately comes down to whether Sean lives or dies - triumph or tragedy. So it's able to feel completely consistent and focused, while still taking the player's actions into account. It's simply putting the same emotional ending into a different physical context to reflect the events.
It's not very different from a film, which could go any which way until the writer commits to a direction. The difference is, a game can potentially commit to more than one direction. Unfortunately, Life Is Strange didn't commit to ANY direction.
>>
>>126065059
Indeed, I'm not trying to argue that no choice-based games with good authorial control exist.

>The difference is, a game can potentially commit to more than one direction. Unfortunately, Life Is Strange didn't commit to ANY direction.
Exactly.

The reason Film and Literature are generally considered art /is/ because of authorial control. It's why most television - with a large team of writers shaping a product freely to maximise viewership - is not considered 'art'. Only auteur style series, such as Twin Peaks, have a chance of being regarded as such.

Ok, that makes sense.
But would parts of the whole package be considered /art/ then (music, graphic design, character design, even algorithms employed)described at )?
>>
Art: [MASS NOUN] The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power

tl;dr. if it made you feel something other than indiference (and maybe it even caused emotion) and was created by human imagination, it is art.

i do not see why games don't apply
>>
>>126065880
>would parts of the whole package be considered /art/ then (music, graphic design, character design
You're thinking of art in the sense of design. They aren't always the same thing. Parts of the game have wonderful craftsmanship and direction, but that doesn't make the game itself a piece of art.

You could ask a bunch of kids to scribble all over a wall and that would technically be art under the base definition.
I'm talking about the academic definition of art. Why are the films of say Hitchcock held in such high regard but something like 'Alvin and the Chipmunks 3' is not? They both required a large amount of human creativity to bring to fruition. Are they both 'art' in the same sense?

taking into account some paintings i've seen in some art galleries the last few days, i'd argue the kids make better art.
sereosly, i wish i'd taken pictures, some things regarded as "art" nowadays are mere piles of dung being sold as a meaningfull piece to be analized and discussed.

revolting

>I'm talking about the academic definition of art.
there is none. every artist has his onw (myself included)

>Why are the films of say Hitchcock held in such high regard but something like 'Alvin and the Chipmunks 3' is not?
they are both pieces of art.

however, hitchcock put in alot more work and brainpower producing his, requiring a lot of experimentation, hard thinking and visualising of every shot.

hitchcock was clearly an artist, who was trying not only to make a quick buck (like the chipmunks), but trying to make the audience feel what he wanted them to feel, he was trying to comunicate something.

in short, they are both art, but they serve diferent purposes. alvin and the chipmunks is a money grabber, designed to sell quickly and be forgotten.

hitchcocks work is meant not to be apreciated by the large masses, but to be remembered to the ends of time has a work pionierring cinematoghraphy has an artistic form of expression.

>They both required a large amount of human creativity to bring to fruition.
no, they don't.

alvin and the chipmunks are a standart movie with very few concepts (if any) which are concidered extroardenary by cinematographys standarts.

hitchcock on the other hand...

as the saying goes: you will never carefully spend years of your life analyzing, stuying and practicing a lady gaga song, but you'll never dance to beethoven in a club either.

>Indeed, I'm not trying to argue that no choice-based games with good authorial control exist.

Totally! I'm just discussing out of interest in the potential of interactive stories, and how different storytelling decisions stack up against each other.

And now that I'm thinking of it, as obvious as it is to say, Heavy Rain's deciding factor is such because it too is the driving force and ultimate goal of the whole story - of course it'd be that pivotal. Another good example of having strong focus.

LiS by comparison feels like a straight narrative that's been shoehorned into a game structure without much thought as to what being a game means. Both endings sort of feel like they're aiming for the same thematic catharsis (keyword, aiming) despite dramatically opposing circumstances - so rather than feeling like alternate outcomes to reflect a different gamestyle, it more just feels like seeing the writer's brainstorm as they tried to figure out how to end it.
Which is a shame, because throughout episode 1-4 it felt like they'd cracked the code of interactive storyelling. The game's littered with passive storytelling, and the gameplay seems rooted in players taking the initiative to figure out what's going on themselves rather than waiting for the cutscenes to tell you - elevating it above 'press x to continue movie' status. Unfortunately, all of that potential is flushed in the end when absolutely none of the player's personal sleuthing is rewarded, and each player gets the exact same experience and exposition when you reach the end.

morning anon

why's everybody talking about alvin and chipmunks
>>
>>126067219

And it wasn't just empty promise. In episode 1, passively noticing Juliet's slate allows us to pick the correct surname. In episode 2, sleuthing in Kate's room can help us save her in more than one way. But the success options don't simply show up because we looked at the right object, it's all there, and it's 100% up to the player to be paying enough attention. I think that's just fantastic, and that there really should have been a bigger build up throughout the game of untracked acknowledgement of player thought (and lack thereof).
Eg, at the detective board the player can zero in on Jefferson quite easily if they recognise his car plates, but we're stuck helplessly watching Max fall into an obvious trap at the end of episode 4 and lament that she never suspected him throughout episode 5.
The blame scene in ep2 was a very well crafted example of misdirection and I don't think that foundation is necessarily flawed, but it could also certainly be looked at as a missed opportunity to reward player thought in how heavily the decision was biased by the narrative - a more neutral 'who do you think dun it?' might have also been interesting.

I enjoyed LiS's passive "do it or don't" investigative process a lot more, but again Heavy Rain (and later in the same fashion, Until Dawn) is ultimately a more successful example (considering it actually goes somewhere). Each playable character is investigating Sean's disappearance, and can find his location depending on whether they found enough clues to put it together. The only 'drawback' here compared to LiS is that CHARACTER has to solve it - the player's own ability to figure it out is negated, and the investigation ultimately comes down to the player performing the right actions to make the game keep going, rather than being forced/allowed to think critically. But as a multi-character story, I don't really see any other way it could be done, so it's less a complaint or flaw, and more a general comparison of the potentials/limitations that exist in the underlying foundations each game is built on.

(I totally realise I'm pretty much just enjoying hearing myself speak by now, I'm sorry! But damn it, I'm so jazzed about this medium!)

Alfred Hitchcock actually aimed to make something interesting and suspenseful. He thought and put a lot of effort into his craft and wanted nothing but to create the best films he could.

Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 is just a head executive saying "the last two films made a decent profit, its a safe bet that a third will as well". Nobody wanted it, nobody wanted to make it but people have bills to pay and need to eat so fuck it. The people reviewing it didn't even want to review it when the theatre next door was filled with some wonderful music from John Williams.

Art today is pretty much defined by what people think is art. If enough people just believe something is art, than it's art.

If it's defined by what people think, then lets see what people thought of Alvin and the Chipmunks 3:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/alvin_and_the_chipmunks_chipwrecked_2011/

and what they think of Physco (by Alfred Hitchcock):

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/psycho/

Well what do you know, a lot of people thought Alvin was shit = Not art

and that Physco was masterpiece = Art

It all just comes down to what people believe to be art. So if you actually make a decent movie with a lot of effort, then people are going to think it's a good movie and there's a better chance people will believe it's art. If you make a shitty cash grab movie that no one asked for, no one wants to make and no one wants to see, nobody will think its art. They'll see it for what it is, shit.

>in short, they are both art, but they serve diferent purposes. alvin and the chipmunks is a money grabber, designed to sell quickly and be forgotten.

Actually, through it's advertising campaign emphasising how the mystery would unravel from beginning to end and needed to be seen from the very beginning to be understood, 'Psycho' was THE movie that actually got people's asses in the seats for the beginning of a movie and kept them there the entire time, putting an end to the entire era of 'walk in and out whenever you want,' where cinemas were basically big public living rooms instead of proper theatres.

Not that it's commercial success and use of advertising diminishes it's artistic content, but it's interesting to compare that to, say, a film that tries to push 3D by having objects fly at the camera. I doubt anyone will remember even 'Avatar' as anything more than another cheap money grab dolled up as something more significant.

Just interesting to think where the line is and why.

But is something automatically 'good' because of supposed artistic intent? To what extent should we praise DONTNOD's craft because they had a 'vision' for the game, as evidenced in interviews, even if the end message was noncommittal and inconsistent - even seemed to counter the themes running through the rest of the game?
>>
>>126068072
Yes, if people in Van Goughs time thought his work was shit, than it would not be art, since no one believes it to be art. Since a majority of people in our time have a appreciation of his work for whatever reason, they believe it to be art. So now everyone thinks his work is art.

If all of a sudden absolutely no one thought his work was good and they didn't like it any more, it wouldn't be art, it would become worthless, and galleries would chuck his shit to the curb, because even they think its not art. No one does. Realistically this would never happen.

If we were to be nuked, no matter what survived, Alvin and the chimpmunks 3, one of Van Goughs paintings, a leaked nude of Mila Kunis, as long as a huge amount of people believe it's something worth looking at, something worth discussing on a foreign image board, it's art.

because artistic intent requires hard work and tecnhique to be comunicated, which dontnod were lacking.

someone may dream up the most amazing interpretation of stravinsky's rite of spring, but if the orchestra does meet the tecnhical standarts to play such a piece, all the artistic merit in such an interpretation would be lost.

execution is just as important as intent.
>>
>>126067362
>But damn it, I'm so jazzed about this medium!
Same, I love thinking about this shit. There's so much potential there. Its nice to see other people so engaged in discussion (even if it did end up a debate about chipmunk films and 'what is art')
>>
>>126068443
>But is something automatically 'good' because of supposed artistic intent?

Not necessarily, there have been a number of movies and TV shows that have claimed to "push the boundaries" artistically or emotionally, which have turned out to be shit, and flopped at the box office or cancelled quickly. Regardless of who made it or how much hype was around it, not enough people thought it was good, which in turn made it not art.

Personally, I am a huge fan of Life is Strange (since that's why I am here), and like a lot of people here I was extremely disappointed by the endings which disregarded so much of the story for "Jeffershit is insane, everything is your fault, your origin of powers was imagination". There vision was never truly realized in the final episode and that was such a wasted opportunity. However I and the most literal dozens of you are in the minority to what people think of Life Is Strange.

96% of 30,000 people thought the game was good, it touched them emotionally and they had so much of a great experience that they actually went through the effort to post about it. It's a safe bet to say that a majority of people think Life is Strange is art. So it is. Regardless of the shitty ending or how we think about it or what DONTNODS real vision was.

However much you want to praise Dontnod regardless of there downfalls with this game is completely up to you.
>>
>>126068886
>execution is just as important as intent.
exactly

You can call anything art, but 'good' art is a success of both execution and intent.

It depends how you're evaluating what is good and what isn't. (Not to mention, I strongly disagree that the word art itself is a measurement of 'good'ness.)
Most people on the street might call a piece of modern art hanging in the Tate 'shit'. Thus making it, apparently, not art. But a minority of the population - curators and students of art - might say it is good, because they have a different understanding of it. What truly gives it the label of 'art', the popularist opinion? The 'informed' opinion? The intent of the artist?

I am putting together a flowchart (a-la-/mu/) of music similar to LiS

Currently working on a few different thoughts for the flowchart. If you guys have any ideas, please share. Current plan is 3 categories; Victoriaish, slowcore, and indie pop. To bad I have literally no motivation to work on it...

Pastebin of collected (unsorted) songs so far:

I think I'm not entirely straight...

If you want to contribute, please contact me on steam, or reply to this post.

Thanks to photoshopgril for putting together the background image and the second chart,
polaroidgril for assembling the album covers/artist names/etc. onto the background image,
Dr. Zaius for helping in general.

I have a torrent of all the games music, Morali's OST, the Vortex Club party, all the licensed songs (most in lossless format), and all the albums they were taken from.

Depends what they set out to do.
If it's just a re-telling of the basic plot of the game, then it may be interesting to see the effects. As long as they don't do the same crap Dontnod did where they just try to force tears out of the audience through shallow writing.
If they try to make an expanded ending/ epilogue, then it can be decent.
If it's a Pricefield-centered project with an original ending, then it can be 10/10.
At the least, seeing the characters and world in a real setting will be neat.

I kind of hope it will be a music video with little dialogue. Way easier to get right. Either a sort of overview of some of the story, or something post-Bae.
It sort of rubs me up the wrong way they're being all official about it when I'm pretty sure it's just a dressed up fan project with dontnod's blessing.

That's from that Give It Another Shot Story. I like that one. You just need to ignore that Max's diary probably wouldn't keep all the info if you rewound. Or maybe it would since she had it on her when she goes back into the photo.

Don't say that! I have faith. However misplaced, and unrealistic, it is.

If enough people flaunt cash and say they want a continuation, Dontnod would be fools not to listen.
Then again, my latest way of thinking has been that the success of LiS has been a mistake, which Dontnod couldn't even realize and use to their advantage, so I don't know if I would trust a season 2.
It would either suffer the same flaws as S1: Be really good, but then fall apart at the end. Or just be crap throughout, causing them to go bankrupt again.

Because over my time playing the game, my interest shifted from the supernatural aspects and more to the normal ones. Specifically Max and Chloe's friendship, and watching it develop into more, and wondering what would happen if/when they found Rachel.
The final episode started to change my mind back to the supernatural elements, and then promptly made me say "fuck that" when nothing was explained.
I ended up loving LiS for the characters, and I want more of that.

Well, I hoped the supernatural stuff would be subdued and everything would come together in a "makes sense in this world" way.

Then surprise Eclipse happened. Uh-oh.

I was very into the "new student, a bit lost" world. I reminds me from I started studying myself. Came from the countryside, sheltered life up now with getting academic creds as top priority, suddenly dumped into town, scary surroundings, no friends, don't know how to live, don't know what to or how to do it, another language (hey, no mobile phones either), totally different rythm in schooling, not in a clique. I nearly jumped outta window. I came through never totally un-warrened though.

If his lightsaber safety is anything like his gun safety, he'd end up stabbing someone through the gut. Then crying how he didn't mean to.
>>

Really most of the cast would probably cut themselves in half if they had a lightsaber. Max and Chloe would be doomed and Warren would probably botch a crazy stunt to impress Max.
>>
>>126113363
and kill Max in the process by accident. Warren? Why?

The Steam sale is happening tomorrow.

I'm sure we'll get some newbies in the near future.

I hope. I'm gonna be legit sad when these threads are gone for good. ;_;
>>
>>126116038
I thought so too. I haven't noticed peak consistent peak times during the last few threads. It's just been sporadic groups of post.
I doubt the New Year will bring much else activity. Maybe people who got the LE will post the artbook, and discuss if there's any changes, but other than that I think it's going to dwindle.

Read Blue is the Warmest Color at the recommendation of a couple anons here.

It was okay, was kind of hard not to associate them with Max and Chloe they look so much alike. Also kind of seems like they thematically plagiarized the ending. The theme/moral/message/whatever is almost identical to the bay ending.
>>

Well, there's a comic and movie I will never touch.
>>
>>126118665
It's better than cheating "Max" from the movie version.
>>
>>126119179
The movie and book couldn't be more different. Even the protagonists don't share a name; the title and the lesbian relationship are all they really have in common.
>>
>>126119114
Why am I not surprised, see how predictable you guys are?

>>126119239
She cheated in the comic too, unless you're talking about how the movie ended, don't remember honestly kind of tuned out.
>>
>>126119381
>Why am I not surprised, see how predictable you guys are?

Are you trying to imply the scene didn't feel forced? Why would you be surprised at somebody having a problem with one of the most ridiculous scenes there?

Looking up the people who do it, HMD Films. They have done stuff in the past, so it's not like it would be their first project.
Not sure why the page is gone now, but just Googling "Life is Strange Movie" brought up an article from HardcoreGamer saying they were on Reddit and confirmed that the movie would be sometime in 2016.
>>
>>126119989
The page is gone because it's not happening.

Is there anything with a happy lesbian ending? Where both are alive, healthy, do not stray apart, etc.?
I'm not really familiar with stuff like that, but it seems like there's an obligation to make stories about lesbians end tragically.
>>
>>126119981
Sorry I wanted to write "Predictable"
Absolutely haram, I am under influence of ethanol at the present time
>>
>>126120140
Why don't you try looking it up?
>>
>>126119535
I obviously noticed it, but didn't care that much, it could happen if people just get careless which people often do.

But it's just predictable that the reaction to it around here would be to sperg out about how the characters didn't behave perfectly rationally and have the obvious foresight that any calculating person would to not walk around naked with an insomniac mom around just wowser so forced.

I mean, whatever, I'm not even trying to be a dick really, it's just that's obviously what i'd expect around here.
>>
>>126119989
Yeah, they were talking to Toby (new Scott) earlier and he seemed cool with it, youd think he'd check with the higher ups first before replying and okay-ing it
>>
>>126120140
I think "Naissance des Pieuvres" is like that (still haven't watched, it's really awkward to see kids play being in love even if it is well done - how do they do it?)

>insomniac mom
Did you even read the comic? Nobody is implying or sperging about character now behaving rationally, but walking downstairs naked in order to get milk, and the first thing your father does is freak out? It's forced as fuck. You have issues desu
>>
>>126119824
Nope, Chloe's flag in the game was clean, nothing written on it.
>>
>>126120140
Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Seriously even if you don't like animu it's great. The two girls hurt each other really badly through their naive assumptions about relationships and how they treat each other, to the point where one of them even becomes suicidal. But in the end they reconcile and it's one of the most beautiful reconciliations ever, it's the happy ending you want. Kind of long though.

>Wanting to rant about global BAY over BAE 51:49 when I finished the game a month ago
>start up the game for a screenshot
>it's now at 54:46

Literally inhumane pieces of shit.

Let me tell you a story, lisg.

>be me around 14
>have girl in class that one day just became an hero
>didn't know her too well, just class mates
>no one had seen it comming, she was lively and shit
>problems at home, alcoholics, never got the whole story
>we were kids so no one really understood how you couldn't notice something was wrong
>she had a best friend
>this girl just breaks down afterwards, psychiatric ward, don't see her again for ages
>have known her older brother a little, playing soccer in our breaks
>ff 10 years
>meet said brother in the mall doing groceries, almost didn't recognize because of beard
>he recognizes me though, baby face syndrome
>small talk, cannot avoid being nosy and ask for sister
>she got better with time, but still has to cope with the shit
>apparently blames herself entirely for not saving her friend from suicide

Dontnod can talk all the fuck they want about imagination and the greater good, but I'm not the only one who met people that are FUCKED UP for life because they couldn't save a loved one. Then come back and tell me how Max's life will not be a nightmare from now on.

This is not shitty writing, this is just disgusting.

I heard about this one last thread, looked decent.
Looking up some stuff on IMDB, Bound seems really good. About lesbian robbers. I could definitely get into that.
Pricefield is honestly the first lesbian relationship in fiction that I liked, and it's currently got a grasp on me. I can't stop looking at art, reading fics, etc.
>>
>>126120514
You're not remembering it correctly. It was said early on that the mother had insomnia, that's why she was awake and saw her getting the milk. The father only even got up because he was awoken by the mother making a scene about it in Clem's room, and it wouldn't have taken much for him to put two and two together to see what's going on.

Idiots that defied what Max wanted and gave into some fatalistic bullshit that doesn't even add up when you examine the game's events. That or shallow fools that think for the ending to be good it needs to make them cry. Glad I never even considered sacrificing Chloe because I thought of what it would do to Max and what it would mean for Chloe.

And that's a sad story. People seem to need to place the blame for tragedy on one source, and when they cannot find one they sometimes default to themselves. It's much easier to place one name and face to something than to accept that numerous events and occurrences lead up to a tragedy. But glad to hear she got better, even if she has lingering doubts. Which I suppose is normal. We will always have something awful happen and think "What if?"
>>
>>126122449
My bad, you're right. Either way, you can't have a scene that the entire narrative of the comic swivels on be that crap.

>>
>>126121909
Those people probably just didn't connect with Chloe that strongly, maybe because they've never felt the way about anybody that Max felt about her. It would actually be pretty easy to sacrifice somebody you don't really even care about that much and then pat yourself on the back and call yourself moral for serving the greater good.
>>
>>126122526
Exactly. In Max's case it's even more cruel. You have an answer to this "What if?" and it's "Yes you can save her,..." So she would live on knowing very well she could have prevented it.

And yes, it's good that she got better. Time heals to some degree I guess. But I honestly didn't know her too well. Just wanted to show that there are people like that IRL.

I'm starting to set my mind on non-canon endings from fanfics. Any third option themed "Max sacrifices herself" or "Max and Chloe get over the past together" has more value than what they gave us.
