I had an idea that utilized impassible destroyable objects instead of walls, but that'd likely be even worse.
An alternative could be indestructable floors and sparing use of destructable walls. Like pic related, where green = destructable, red = indestructable. Basically the idea being, walls that line hallways are indestructable; but inside of departments, walls next to space and maint walls next to departments are indestructable.
It's still a lot of sectors, but it would cut down the amount drastically with minimal effect on gameplay.

You've guessed exactly what I planned to do. I'm essentially making "breach zones", which are specific areas that are commonly broken into or destroyed by random events such as meteorsor bombs, where parts of the area can be destroyed through various means. Basically, imagine that reinforced walls are indestructable and there's a bit more of them, and you've got roughly what I was planning. That and chunking some of the tiles together for explosion effects.
I'm likely going to start out simple with making one-tile walls that can be dismantled, then building on it from there. Gotta keep it simple at first.

to add on that, if it isn't enough, you can probably halve the amount of sectors by making a ton of them 2 wall segments counting as one sector.
Another really tricksy method would be to make a script that would determine a width of the wall you'd want to be considered one wall, determining where, along a specific wall, the player is and which "wall segment" they are interacting with, and then creating a sector in that specific part of the wall.
Not sure if that's possible without getting down and nasty with the source with the sourceport you are using, though. When you finally release, I'd definitely look into making a system like that.
The only downside is that if there is enough destruction in a round, then it'd get laggy, but occlusion of those sectors after the wall segment has been removed would be trivial once the system was figured out.

I could do some testing by making a couple of debug maps running various scripts on arrays of sectors, just to see how much processing power it can put out before the engine either slows to a crawl or dies.
I'm not too sure on the script part you're mentioning unless you're referring to making something that parses the raw map data and generates an optimal amount of sectors, since it's not really possible to create new sectors while the map is running due to BSP. It'd require a rewrite of basically the entire internal map handling, so yeah, I'm kinda leaning towards the former. For the moment.
I'm heading to bed soon, but tomorrow is more devtime, I'll try to get some basic stress tests done.

Oh no absolutely. That's something that I'd do myself once you released because I'm sure it'd require quite a bit of technical fuckery to even get working. Your idea of key points being grouped as sectors is a much more optimal solution.
I've done a bit of work recently with some of the technical aspects of a private branch of Voxlap helping a friend out, I'm getting more and more familiar with specialized subdivision.
The two engines I always thought that would be optimal to port SS13 to would be idtech 1 because it's essentially a 2d top down game in a first person perspective, and voxlap for it's really rather impressive world and rendering systems.

Obviously running everything on one map is easier, but for now it's split up to keep things organized.
And yeah, idtech 1 is probably one of the most underrated engines when you consider how powerful it is for its age. Admittedly, a lot of that power comes from source ports, but there's still a lot of extremely clever stuff hidden in there.

How would you successfully manage a hostage situation as a traitor? I'd imagine others would be involved, and so would multiple bombs.

It won't work, not on this server.
A successful hostage situation requires RP. Since we're a light RP server, Sec's going to break down your door and fuck you up rather than RP any kind of concern for the hostage. You know why? Because death has no meaning here.
They break in and you shoot the hostage dead? Big deal, they tase you and take the hostage to be cloned, he's back in action within minutes.

Outside of managing to get an HoS who is willing to RP with you (doubtful), there is no way to maintain a successful hostage situation on this server.
I once had something like one by taking three officers hostage in the permabrig. The remaining two officers were waiting outside, not sure what to do. Even then, though, it was more the case that I had the three officers prisoner than that they were my hostages. The remaining officers weren't coming into perma because they were scared of ME, not out of concern for the "hostages."

During my final test before making the PR, I was able to have a constant feed of creatine and nearly every healing chem for at least 20 minutes. Unprotected spacewalks, tanking lasers, the works. My healing factor was even able to outpace the burn damage from standing in a welding fuel fire. It was actually the pressure damage that ended up wearing me down first, and only because there aren't as many chems that heal brute damage compared to the other damage types.

You've got some concepts mixed up.
If you (as a clean slate) take 25u of creatine or less, you'll incur heavy toxin damage until it works its way out of your system, no explosion. If you take 27u or more, you'll be hulked for roughly a minute after which you're guaranteed to explode, but you won't take any toxin damage.
If you take exactly 26u, you enter a stable state of creatine usage. From that point on, you incur constant toxin damage from the creatine in your system, as well as being constantly hulked. Hello, I'm working on simplifying Space Law while expanding it as necessary to cover as many situations as possible, as well as adding laws to apply to violations not presently covered.
First I'm working on Minor Law, then it will be the other two sets. I'd really like everyone's input on this.
After laws are done, I'm going to work on Security procedure, then a general outline of escalation between Sec and others, and when an admin needs to intervene, and finally a page for how to run a trial tailored to the /vg/ playstyle.
We've talked about rewriting the rules prior, at least updating the wording(some words are outdated, outright referencing things not in our build), so I figured...
It would also be time to list out all unwritten rules as well, and rules applying to each job that aren't outright listed. The point is not so much to to add rules and regulations though, as it is to prevent admin intervention and to show the players when too far is way too far. Basically, how escalation should work amongst nonantags and nonantags, and nonantags and security, and again, when an admin should or shouldn't intervene.
The goal for this is for the guidelines on proper escalation to be broad enough to allow the freedom we all know and love here at /vg/ while being able to know when enough is enough and you've started to ruin fun for others.

Likely the former. I'm considering expanding from that once it's done into FEA-style atmospherics for certain areas. It's worth noting a tidbit about that picture, though - the particles can impart effects on nearby actors, and they also keep bouncing until they dissipate entirely, which means that the sector-based system might be unnecessary (assuming I can get the particles to behave and only try to affect players). Of course, that's just a cursory note, and I haven't exactly tested it out extensively to see how efficient and/or functional that concept would be.

Further development notes, I'm using this station as a debugging map to be able to test the basics of how a station should work at the very barebones level. It's no Box, but it seems to have everything that's required. The only problem is that I don't have the power cable map available, but that means it'll be easier to make something compact.
