Well, basically every character's great big dilemma is that they're afraid of acting, isn't it? Toriel can't leave the ruins and face Asgore, Sans just can't muster up the energy to do much anything besides just let you do your thing, Alphys doesn't want to make a move lest anybody else get hurt, let alone herself and Asgore's whole issue is that he'd rather just sit there on his throne and hope no more kids show up for him to kill than be proactive.

How about with Cyan, he's killed several kids by now due to his incompetence and thus covers himself with pillows or something to avoid causing any potential deaths.
Cyan kid gets into some sort of trouble from which Asgore could easily save her from, but he can't because of his bids to make himself harmless and thus she dies before he can do anything about it.

Regardless of liking Soriel or not, I do feel like I'm an outcast among the people who got romantic vibes from them during the TP ending.
I just felt like Toriel was intentionally paying more attention to Sans to piss Asgore off and also because jokes.
Still I do find it interesting how tumblr seems to be all over Soriel, and here it's disliked. Not so much because disliking tumblr things is weird or anything, but I was kinda surprised to see the amount of dislike for it over here.I don't like it myself at all though.

I'm suddenly reminded of how in MGS2's Snake's Tales, your own gameplay can affect how the stories end up going without this ever being made explicit, much like Undertale.
So whether you try to rescue prisoners or defuse a bomb, or use a tranq gun or lethal weaponry makes a difference and it's left up to the player to realized this.

What IS the point? The Pacifist run isn't a rewarding gameplay experience, from a mechanical perspective. The fight with the dummy highlights how weird this is. You have a conversation with an inanimate object, and then Toriel says you did a good job. Like, what the fuck?
Actually, everything you do with Toriel in the Ruins is weird. She doesn't let you solve puzzles while you're with her. She labels the button you need to press, and tells you to press it. She HOLDS YOUR HAND through a puzzle, and then the ONE time she tests your "independence", you're forced to walk in a straight line. To me, there's not much that's independent about that. And far from being sent off to the next area by the tutorial character; she BLOCKS the way!
I feel like The Ruins is a litmus test for your gamer sense; do you go along with the way the narrative tells you to play, or do you follow your instincts? Either way, you get rewarded and punished for each decision in unique ways: if you kill, you gain LV, but learn later that it's a BAD thing ("But nobody came" is the extreme demonstration of this). If you let live, you don't gain LV, but the NPC's reward you with...flavor text. And dialogue. And, possibly, an alternate ending.
I have a theory: Gamers that don't like Undertale may not like it for the story, which is fair, but there's a whole subset of gamers that only ever play on instinct, and a retro style pixel-RPG challenges that philosophy directly. What do you think?

The whole point of Undertale is that it's a new spin on the traditional RPG genre. Instead of the monsters being endless mooks who you mow down during your grinding, they're sympathetic characters who you can help out with their problems instead of killing. Chara is your instinct from a typical RPG that feels good about numbers going up, like attack, EXP, gold, etc. Sure, other games also have the idea of deconstructing typical game behavior, but what Undertale does well is that it actually gives you a choice in the matter besides "stop playing" like most of the other 'deconstruction' games do.

When I played it, the only thing on my mind was survival. I started out being absolute shit, eating nothing but carrots, berries and the occasional rabbit, and never lasted more than a week or so. Then over time I started testing out new machines and items and figured out what worked for me, began exploring the map and discovering more things, etc etc.
I like that it lets you do this yourself, without forcing you or suggesting to play in any particular way. It's curiosity and immersion for the sake of it, not because you expect fake rewards.

Last night I tried going to sleep around 4 and didn't go to sleep until around 6, kept looking at clover on my phone and it kept me awake, even though I was pretty tired. Because it makes the game more challenging. 20 HP is already plenty for every neutral encounter you can face. Unfortunately the final boss of the TP run is way, way too easy anyway. Meanwhile Genocide is incredibly boring but gets 2 challenging and fun boss fights. Neutral has literally nothing going for it difficulty (other than good bittersweet endings that don't trigger the gag reflex like the TP run)
To be honest, there's a much better game in there spread out between the pacifist and genocide run but as it stands they both are pretty boring overall. Real shame.
