I actually read Starship Troopers after reading MLA and I hated it.
It's clear that the author of ML got some inspiration from it; after all, the main premise of Starship Troopers is thatThere are giant bug-like aliens at war with humanity.
However, I made the huge mistake of expecting Starship Troopers to actually have any of the things that made MLA great: Characters you bond with, interesting themes presented from different points of view, de-glorification of war etc.
Starship Troopers reads like a fanfic, or a simple way for the author to spout his straightfoward beliefs. It's fucking awful.

That's because he spends more time with that girl since the routes generally start to cut out other characters from Yamato's life as they progress. It really happens in every story as a means to filter out the fluff that isn't interesting to read.

Of course you wouldn't. You wouldn't recall acting differently in large stretches from your life since that requires intense self-awareness. You're more likely to pick up differences between your youth, adult, and senior years and that's it.
When you fall for someone, small things would change in how you act around them. It's why others can more easily point out those subtle differences than you and why the dense MC stereotype was taken to an extreme - it has a basis in reality like most cliches are.

All in all it feels like I'm arguing with a woman and her definition of love, falling for someone is really not that big of a deal as you make it out to be, and it doesn't take that much "self-awareness" to notice your own behavioral changes. For 2 years some of my friends and even my family thought I was interested in a certain girl (and they even "rooted" for me and teased me), but I never had the heart to tell them that I was actually interested in one of her friends and was only getting along with her to get more chances to speak with her friend.
But yeah I guess this topic is more subjective than I thought and it'd be impossible to settle on a "correct" answer.
