He looks so dopey and cute in that gold crown. I could just snuggle up with him and stay there all the time, but he isn’t good company. I dunno. Even though the Homestuck and the furry fanbase will try to appropiate the shit out of it, Undertale definitely trascended both. It's not so much that it is an "emotional mindfuck" but there's definitely a unique language to video games that Toby, perhaps unwittingly, exploited to twist expectations and project emotions a bit closer to the player using the same gamey constructs.
Aside from that, there are so much things that Toby did right it's insane. Leitmotifs, archetypes, pacing, he nailed it all.
I can see pro videogame producers/designers scratching their heads and wondering where does this little indie twink comes from, and how can he have gotten everything so right, because they sure as fuck aren't (I'm looking at you, Tim Schafer).

I like to think he committed suicide. Both Papyrus and Sans are very forgiving of most horrible acts Frisk commits. My belief is that this was a mechanism they developed to protect their feelings for a loved one one who had committed some awful acts themselves.
I'll go further to say that it's likely that Gaster is responsible for the determination extraction machine (one of Alphys' data entries notes she made the machine from 'the blueprints') and that he was aware that through his actions, an immortal entity would be created. And that at about that same time, the information that poor Sans is so depressed about, the end of the timeline, would be revealed as well. It's hard to imagine that kind of information coming from somewhere else.
But then again, I also think that Frisk is just a silent artificial human created by Gaster, an effort made to destroy the barrier, the original vessel that Alphys' own research would be based on. Pretty well explains the whole Chara thing. So it's more like I believe Gaster tried to destroy his horrible, determination filled creation through a double suicide, obliterating the unholy monstrosity, but unfortunately Frisk's determination was powerful enough to overcome even that fate. So whatever. I mean, it all turned out fine in the end anyway, maybe, so what's it matter?
