I am here, and I am NOT queer!
>>
So, as I was saying, a lot of games are hesitant on the gay, requiring the player to make the first move, making all the gay routes have 'friendship' endings possible instead of only romance, while the het ones just go straight for I LOVE YOU LET'S MAKE BABIES.

Have you noticed this? Does it bother you? Would you prefer it if het routes had friendship options too?
>>
I'm frankly amused by how /evn/ used to be the place where the KS-clones would shit on each other. Now that there are evidently at least one or two BL devs here, the claws are out.
It's fun to watch.
>>
>>125608691

> people becoming more critical in their consumption

oh no, the humanity!
>>
>>125608276
Yes, it bothers me. If it's gay, commit to it and make it gay.
>>
>>125609453
Does it make a difference if it's a gay route in a mostly-het game vs an all-gay game?

I remember being surprised at how very not-gay Asphyxia was.
>>
>>125609074
I'm not complaining. It's more entertaining to see fresh faces shitting on each other instead the same old group of jaded guys. I believe in diversity!
>>
>>125608691
I am not a BL/GL dev, but I play them myself. It's annoying when those types of games are "lite" on the gay to accommodate those who don't even like the genre.
>>
>>125609628

Yes. To this day I'm still mad about True Love 95 making me play the gay route until to end in a black screen with a "haha and then we dated" note.

Fuck that.
>>
>>125609628
Yes it makes a difference. The "gay route" in het games are so few and far between there's really no point in even mentioning them. BL/GL games are already small enough already but yet evn devs are trying to shove in "no homo" in such a small pool of games that it tends to stand out. There are so many Het games in comparison.
>>
>>125609731
I'm a massive hypocrite, because I kind of hate that in games, but I can't bring myself to write an entire cast full of nothing but 100% gay people.
>>
>>125609992
>The "gay route" in het games are so few and far between there's really no point in even mentioning them.
Don't most het games have a gay route? I thought it was pretty common in otome and bioware and stuff.

>>125609886
The copout ending bugs me. I don't mind the gay route being harder to get than the main one, though, but if I've gone to the effort I want my proper gay end.
>>
>>125609996
It doesn't have to be 100% gay people. Nobody is arguing about that. People are arguing that people are shoving no homo into gay games that are being marketed as gay games.
>>
>>125610221
You obviously don't play a lot of het games. No they do not. And if they do, it's a joke route. Although in the Evn scene it's beginning to change a little bit with het games. But not enough to where it's actually noticeable.
>>
>>125609731
I feel the same way.
Granted, there are also players who want to see homo MCs in a game that isn't so heavily focused on sex and romance. It doesn't appear to be a very big group, but they ARE out there.
>>
>>125610282
If the MC is gay and all 4-6 love interests are gay how is that not 100% gay people?
>>
>>125612064
Again, missing the point. We're talking about toning down the gay in a game that's marketed and referred to as Boy's love.
>>
Is the BL audience even okay with that half-assed no-homo option bullshit? I've heard people bitch endlessly about Japanese BL games just because a love interest mentions having been interested in women at some point.

I don't even know why you'd want to cater to the no-homo-bromo audience. They're usually not even concerned about the actual porn/romance in BL, but the notion that they couldn't possibly empathize with an MC who doesn't want to fuck girls.
>>
>>125608276
I'd like it in general if I could just find out the various characters' stories without necessarily falling in love with them.
>>
>>125612247
But that's what I'm trying to say though? Even if I'm setting out to write a BL game, I have a really hard time conceptualising and characterising a gay protagonist and a completely gay set of romance options, unless he's meeting them _at a gay bar_. If you're just supposed to be meeting these people as you go along, I feel stupid writing them all gay.

But at the same time I'm annoyed by the prospect of being given five datable guys and then finding out that the one I went for is straight.
>>
>>125610221

I'll give it to you in your proper gay end.

>>125608276

I don't know if I would prefer either game having friendship + romance options. Either the story is going to introduce a romance subplot and resolve it, or it's going to introduce a friendship and resolve it. I think the focus on what the relationship is about needs to be made clear from the start, and that waffling on it can weaken the entire story, since every character interaction needs to then be framed from a romance/non-romance perspective.

If you do the branch, it should be early, that way you can build either a romance story or a friendship story, but I think just deciding the relationship from the outset is the best way to go. The decision point needs to be early enough that the rest of the story continues logically from it-- if it's too late, than all the logic leading to that point is weakened.
>>
>>125613239
>But at the same time I'm annoyed by the prospect of being given five datable guys and then finding out that the one I went for is straight.

Queen at arms did this in inverse (MC falls in love with a gay guy) and it annoyed me to no end.

The thing is, you can have both men and women as LIs, what you can't do it have a Boy's Love game with scenes like your MC waking up with a boyfriend and then give "opt out" options for the benefit of no one.
>>
>>125613590
>I'll give it to you in your proper gay end.

The example we are talking about is a literal black screen. Gay route confessed to MC and then... cut to a black screen with narration about how they became and item.

i believe that sir was attempting an innuendo, master.
>>
>>125613770

So to explain the joke, the joke I was making is that I would fuck you in your "proper gay end". This is where end means your rear end, or ass. I was making a joke where a "proper gay end" is a metaphor for your butt. That was the joke. Thank you for making me explain it, I'm sure it will be of benefit to everyone else in the thread.

--
My sincere reply to your opinion is that it's useless to not develop a gay relationship and then provide some sort of "and they lived gaily ever after" in the ending title.

I think I would rather heavily imply gay/lesbian romances with side characters. But I like my protagonists to have fixed sexual orientation.

They are either straight, bi, or gay from the start and that is who they are. I think that about all of my characters. You cannot just romance someone who is a lesbian and convert them to the church of cock. If that is possible, they were/are not really a lesbian.

I think as a writer you have your own preconceived notions about sexuality. Mine is that sexuality has very little room for choice and is mostly a fixed characteristic (even if that state is an openness to either gender). If your opinion is different, I think that allows for differences in how you handle it-- you could believe that all people are essentially pan-sexual and just need the right persuasion. That is a legitimate world view though it clashes with mine.

Given that one is your professor, the other is a snob, and the last is in the closet, I somehow doubt having sex with them early would make much sense.

Post as you play, it'd be nice to liven up the thread with thoughts related to an /evn/.

Be fair when discussing it, try to find the good and the bad, or really, you can just focus on the positive-- we have a lot of negative discussion and there's no way any title will escape being railed, so maybe try something different at the start.

That honorific, and there are ones for every member of your family, like most Japanese honorfics are based on status. In this case if you said "Aniue" or "Chichiue" it would be because your brother or father is like royal blood or you're in a family that is so extremely prestigious you treat your family as royalty.

The problem with having had long hair for years is that when I see characters with long hair, I focus way too much on the details. How isn't his hair fried already?

Stirfry should take between 5-10 minutes, ideally shorter. You might not know how to stir fry. Most of the concern is actually burning things.

Maybe if you have a shitty induction stove it takes longer, but if you're cooking with gas, it's not at all hard (the stove pictured is a gas range cooktop >>125624283 )

IMO italics suck for anything more than a short sentence, and in many fonts they either look bad or it's hard to tell at a glance that it's thoughts instead of speech.

Not saying your preference is wrong though

I can agree about shitty italic fonts. You can't always just tell the font to be italic-- sometimes you have to get the italic version of the font.

Does anyone have advice for making characters cute but believable?

Sometimes I struggle to break out of using the same narrative style for characters (i.e. my own way of thinking/acting) otherwise I end up using cliches by mistake and archetypes.

How can I maintain some aspects of the cliche (i.e. tsundere) so that the character has some anime cuteness/comedy, but also write believable, enjoyable waifus?

Okay, not shit, but a LOT worse than what they had in their dA. My suspicions of them just drawing over game screenshots have deepened.
>>
>>125671726

Hey, at least you posted it.

Remember that people tend to lead with their best/most time consuming stuff. Try to check the quality of other commissions so you get an idea.

Personally, I'd recommend trying to connect a bit more with an artist before investing too deeply-- then, sadly, I think you need to commission a few things to get an idea of their work and decide if you want to have them as your main artist.

Ultimately if they aren't interested in working with you long term and creating in the style that you have in mind (or one you like) it's not going to work out.

writing is nonsensial
characters are flat (and apparently the lead guy hangs on to those characters for 10 years or something)
sprite art in Sunrider is boring (just get the pack with all the lewd CGs if you want)
absolutely retarded tacked-on "gameplay" in Academy that's only there as padding
(JP is a retarded closeted bigot, but his reviews on Sunrider have some valid points. Yeah, it's so bad even JP is partially right about it.)

>>

it seems like a shame because sunrider academy has all the groundwork there to be a good game, if only the devs had added more events and scenes to stop the stat raising being so mind-numbingly tedious... having a few more random background characters would also have been a nice touch, since it felt weird being able to explore this whole city and only ever running into the same 4 characters. it was weirdly desolate, like some kind of zombie apocalypse.

Tbh these screenshots make me want to play the game less than I did before. I haven't played the demo so I didn't know MC would be such an asshole. Do his eyes even change form or are they stuck in that 3deep5u position?

How du you feel about asshole MCs /evn/? I can't stand it if they're that teenage brand of superficial asshole, makes me want to punch them in the dick. Tsundere is ok though.
>>
>>125711117
>How du you feel about asshole MCs /evn/?

I can deal with them if they get some sort of comeuppance, but if they are assholes all the time and get away with it, it gets annoying.
>>
>>125710165
Gives a whole new meaning to "mixed race babes".
>>
>>125712058

I generally like them, but they have to be played correctly.

Taichi from Cross Channel is a great example of an asshole MC that I feel carries a lot of the story. If he was a kind guy or some sort of flavorless blob, Cross Channel would not function as a story. He is a very broken man and well aware of who he is. This carries the plot in interesting directions.

Rance is another great example of an asshole MC. He fits in with the rules of his universe, he is an unrepentant cad, a conquering rapist, a warlord that uses force to perpetuate his immorality. He feels little if any remorse for his actions and because they have little other choice, his close comrades accept him for who he is. He is also a bit helpless-- he isn't an asshole because he "wants" to be an asshole, he's an asshole because that is who he is, he is as helpless to his urges as his victims are to resist them.

I would take an asshole over a self-insert any day of the week.
>>
>>125711117
>How du you feel about asshole MCs /evn/
It really depends. I think a lot of young writers dont realize why an asshole MC works, and that's because they use it as a means to an end but still have a moral code. It's why Mal from firefly sounds like a cunt when you read about him, but is loved as a character - he's an asshole but he protects the ones close to him with said assholeism. If he did everything without his moral code he would be the series antagonist.

I haven't played BCM yet but I would think it would be written well. The game goal seems to be to time travel and change your poor relationship with your brothers, so i think it's natural shuuki would be a cunt.
>>

>I haven't played the demo so I didn't know MC would be such an asshole.

>>
>>125713604

I have no issues with Rance because he's so exaggerated that it becomes funny.
>>
>>125713604
With Rance it helps that he actually does get shit done and he does do far more good than evil.

There are many people in the series who tolerate his shit because of that and others who respect him first because of his achievements and then decide not to care about the other stuff
>>
>>125711117
I'm the opposite. I wasn't interested but for some reason the game just looks a lot better than I thought it would. I'm glad somebody posted the screenshots. I'll probably buy it this weekend.
>>

>>
>>125714034
Why are you cutting out my 'would be'? Also is it shit?
>>
>>125716602
It's the exact same sentiment.
>>
>>125713604
Cross Channel's plot allows Taichi to be an asshole without consequences. He's also a comedian and it becomes clear as time passes just how broken of a person he really is, which allows the readers to sympathize with him.

Rance can also get a pass because he too is a comedian in a world that doesn't take much of anything seriously and his rampant assault on the female gender, willing or not, tends to be in comedic situations where the worst the girl will do is say "No" while she flails around a bit. There's never any real violence, screaming, blood, etc. with him. Rance almost always backs off if he feels they'll genuinely be hurt by it. The only times I've seen him disregard that is when he's up against a villain.

As long as an asshole MC isn't treated as a complete edgelord and/or has some nice character development, I think they can be a very viable protagonist.

Natsume and Shuuki are now walking home together and I'm not sure if this is 2obvious foreshadowing or literally a dark shadow up ahead. I guess we'll see!

>>125727851

I feel like Natsume's narcoleptic or some shit. He fell asleep as soon as they were in the door of their house, and I DON'T mean that figuratively. It's literal. Shuuki is half carrying his ass to his room. Holy shit, Natsume.

Natsume has sleep talk about "not wanting things to change." Okay. Shuuki shrugs it off, while reminiscing about better times.

In regards to the cap: Is Fuyu the older twin? Does Shuuki just REALLY like family honorifics? If she's your twin, I would assume they were close enough that they could, you know, be first name basis with each other.

>>125728112
I'm not saying that I think they look believably Japanese, even in anime land, but canonly, they're Japanese.

I just think it's lame that people always go for japanese setting. Why not do a different culture or something? It'd be more interesting. Oh but wait, then they'd have to do actual research and read books and shit about their culture of choice. So nah, let's just make another vn set in japan based off all of the animes I saw!
>>
I quit BCM... damn. Well i'm happy i supported the devs but the writing clearly isn't doing it for me. Anon if you find out the killer can you post a spoiler for me?

I just hate it because it's always just oh-give-them-Japanese-names-and-use-weeb-spice-words and not actually set in Japan. Like if you wanna set something in Japan fine, but maybe do some actual research instead of just defaulting to ~vaguely japanesey~ because you can't conceive of a VN that isn't like that
>>
>>125728828
Well, it actually is set in Japan. The house even looks like a typical Japanese house from the outside. I dunno outside of that. Didn't the artist say she just put garbled Japanese that didn't mean anything in backgrounds and papers though?

I don't think Masa's home yet. I think Yuki killed Masa and I'm running with that assumption until I learn otherwise.

Also Natsume apparently can't afford groceries, and since their parents DO live there, I want to understand why the parents aren't paying for food.

Meanwhile the world hates Natsume because he didn't save Fuyuka. This shit makes me roll my eyes but at the same time I know people can be goddamn irrational so we'll roll with this.

"Why didn't you do something??"
Why are you asking someone who was probably only 14 at the time why he didn't do something? He's still a damn kid. Good lord.

Shuuki's pretty sweet to Natsume. That makes me happy.

>always
They don't, though, there are plenty of non-Japanese EVNs.

The problem is that almost every EVN dev has at least one game idea they set in Japan at some point, either because they love anime and want to be involved, or because they think everyone else loves anime and will only play their game if it's weeby enough. see the folks trying to get japanese voice acting for original english games.

it doesn't help that there really are crazy weebs out there who are more interested in a game if they think it's Japanese, and idiots who give TERRIBLE writing a pass if they think it might be originally Japanese. You can see all sorts of people saying that it's okay that Beach Bounce was full of spelling and grammar errors because "it's a translation!"

Also the dorm mom has a side sprite out of nowhere.

Dorm mom wants you to know that you can't bring girls to the dorms or go to their dorms.

Screencap is followed by
Shuuki: And what is that supposed to mean?
Dorm Mom: Oh I've heard all about you, Shuuki-san, and your umm, /reputation/. No philandering is allowed here, alright?

She's kinda glaring too. P sure that's really inappropriate to say to a fucking student what the hell. Even if Shuuki is a slut.

Q: If I am making a VN set on the night before Christmas, is it absolutely imperative that I release it on/before Christmas day? The Christmas part is not essential to the plot and can actually be removed, but I like it at Christmas. New Years would also work, but I like it at Christmas.

Would you read a VN set on Christmas day, even after Christmas?

It's about as relevant as Christmas is in the first Die Hard movie.
>>
>>125734104

As a followup, everything should be done well before Christmas day (target is 23rd) but I do want to have some time to beta test it / get feedback / make changes.

I suppose corrections could be made in a followup patch though.
>>
>>125734104
(if it's a free game) Just finish it and then wait until next year. Maybe work on another vn in the meantime.
>>
>>125734104
If you get it out between christmas and new years, that's close enough to Christmas for me to still enjoy chrsitmas things.

If you wait until April, then it's far enough from Christmas that it doesn't matter, Christmas can be a far distant setting.

Releasing a game set on Christmas in January feels lame though.
>>
>>125734365

The Christmas thing is entirely non-essential. I should probably just scrap it so that the VN can be read all year round without much consideration for date and will still get downloads "off season".

The interests of the team are to have "any release" in our name ASAP, as long as it's quality.

Thanks

I don't think it's that critical to release on or right before Christmas. It's always nice when a game can come out when it's set season-wise, but it's not always possible. I don't think people are usually all that picky unless it's like a Christmas theme game.

Next day, Shuuki's getting ready to shower. He runs into Yukinari and it turns out, the 530 slot that Natsume took was originally Yuki's! Someone erased his name.

Yuki and Natsu tl;dr share a slot, which doesn't quite work since Shuuki has the slot after the 5:30 AM slot and Natsu does NOT want to shower with Yuki. Shuuki is suspicious of Yuki, but anyway, we're brought to this choice.

I've accomplished nothing with my life. Just failed project after project. Not even in only game project wise, but life in general. I've been on this planet for 20 years and I have accomplished nothing. What am I doing.
>>
>>125757339
You're barely out of diapers, no one expects you to have accomplished anything yet. Right now you're supposed to be trying a bunch of shit and failing at all of it so that you know what you want to focus on. You have at least seven more years before you get to freak out.

That don't mean shit. All these other people, the same age as me, even younger, are accomplishing more things than I ever have. If they can do it, why haven't I? Why haven't any of you? I am not happy.
>>
>>125758880
>If they can do it, why haven't I?
Because you're a little bitch asking questions like this instead of working, maybe? Get shit done in the best way you possibly can, then you can complain about it not selling or the market. You didn't even put in the work necessary to earn the right to whine yet.

>Why haven't any of you?
Speak for yourself, not everyone here is devoid of accomplishments.

>I am not happy.
What is happiness? Who is happy? Why should accomplishing anything make you happier for longer than 3 whole seconds?

The answer is "it doesn't matter, get back to work".

The amounts I have made have changed wildly though out my life. I have gone from "relatively rich" to "broke poor" to "actually rich" to "dwindling unemployment" to "wow super rich" to "he's doing okay".

Accomplishing something at a young age is meaningless. Look at Jamarcus Russell, Raiders QB. He accomplished amazing things for an athlete, his life was set, all he had to do was play the fucking game and he would have had hundreds of millions of dollars.

What happened? The guy drank purple drank until his career died.

---

Here's a lesson for you. Teenagers and 20-somethings do not account for much in this world. They are shit. The ones that do imagine they are accomplishing something-- well, they are dancing on the strings of a lot of other, much older, much more connected and experienced people.

Real life is not a fantasy book, by and large. Odd things happen, but they are just flukes. What matters is building your legacy. Whether the tortoise or the hare wins the race can only be determined at the finish line.

And the finish line is nowhere near 20 years.

You mean, because a character is somewhat flamboyant/dandyish, or because he has a girl's name, which is sort of weird, or because he is dark-skinned, or because he's an elf, or because he has long hair?

Plenty of adult women enjoy slender long-haired elfboys.

Being named Lucy is not commonly appealing to girls that I know of, and the bizarre fashion choices are a matter of taste. Glam rockers and macaronis have been things that attracted at least subsets of women.

How hard would it be to find an artist to collaborate for a free nukige?
>>
>>125813161
Terribly, haven't written anything just ideas, but thank god I am finally out of school so I'll have much, much more time to write.
>>
>>125826781
Depends on what your level of collaboration is. Most artists are aware that porn is a thing people are motivated to buy and expect to be paid well for it, if they're willing to draw it at all. Others get a kick out of drawing naked fun but they are likely to want to do their own thing and not draw what you ask them to.

You can't really use a nukige for portfolio-building, unless you're trying to get hired by winged cloud or something, so they have a lot less incentive.

I've got some chocolate chip cookies in the oven. I you're a good boy or girl and post progress, you can have one. You can have two if it's actually tangible, i.e. a picture or a pastebin.
>>
>>125826781

It would be difficult, but not impossible. The issue is finding an artist who is not a flake. The reputation is not undeserved for many artists-- and others have very real priorities like producing works FOR money that they cannot stray from. That does consume a lot of energy.

One approach to recruitment may be to write good erotic stories in a public medium of some kind, gain a following, and then try to recruit from those interested.

If you can actually write a compelling nukige premise, have really solid technical writing skill, and are a functional project manager-- I think you could pull it off.

If you cannot write well enough to do that, you need to find a way to demonstrate what you would bring to a team.

---

I have spent all day writing and I am feeling completely burned. But some advice I have after writing all day is that research really pays off. I spent a lot of time researching lock-picking, safe-cracking, types of locks, the history of locks, locksmiths guilds in Florence, etc. All of that research is paying off in spades.

Lock-picking in stories is neglected as an activity-- and characters seem to be able to do it for convenience. But being able to describe exactly what is going on makes it much more fun and vivid. In a Heist story, I think details like that add a layer of authenticity that makes the story more engaging and believable.

My editor is also nowhere to be found, which is unfortunate.

It's probably because I'm tired and I've been writing in script form all day. So while there are a few meaty NVL parts, most of the writing is line writing. But I have done it before and I actually do not know why I do it, it's a subconscious habit that just happens whenever I click a post number and reply to it.

I actually do not do not do it in my own writing and tend to keep things in organized paragraphs. My biggest weakness is probably comma abuse and an over-fondness for en dash. Also I suck.

I have a sinking feeling my project lead is an idea guy and I'm not sure how I feel about it.
>>
>>125835337
What do you mean? What does he do? Writing? Drawing? BG? Programmer? Musician?
>>
>>125835412
He programs and writes, but he works really closely with another programmer and writer. Ive noticed that work for the game didnt budge until the other guy is around and took a hiatus when he did. I asked him some questions about the build code and he had no clue what I was talking about. I know I sound looney but its like a gut feeling I have. So I think now he can write and code but not to the extent the other person can, but still claims credit.
>>
>>125837092
Why not just talk to the other guy and see what he has to say? If he's doin all the work, then he'll tell you.
>>
>>125837092

I think you need to trust your feelings on this. If you've been working on this for a long time, you have enough data to make conclusions. That said, even if the PM/Lead is an idea guy, that does not necessarily mean that the project is doomed. The question is if the team itself has enough leadership to make progress and if you have seen enough progress so far to be happy. If it hasn't, then it is best to move on.

You may also want to make sure that your idea of project timeline matches the team's. I think if you're an artist this can be especially important. I also do not think it would be inappropriate to show what you have been working on, ask what they have been working on, and then ask if you can see it. I am not sure how your project is structured, but on teams of more than two people, it is best to have a repository where you can see work as it comes in, and have a grasp of who is doing what.

Jesus, I can't spend 2+$ every day. Wait, I got an idea. What if I just order a drink, but keep the cup. So when I go there the next day, before I go inside, I'll sneak in my cup from yesterday. So whenever they'll look over, I'll just take a "sip" of "coffee"(actually air) from my starbucks cup. I doubt they would remember if I had bought anything that day. Right?

Yes, Wendys and mcdonalds have dollar menus. Wendys has a 4pc for 99c (actually 1.05 because of tax). So I can get a 4pc (with a free sauce)(1.05), a chocolate frosty (1.05), and a cup of water (0.00) and a value fry (1.05) to have it all amount to 3.15 total. If I'm feeling extra fat, I can get a jr. cheese burger for 1.05 as well but I am rarely ever that hungry.

A decent-sized cup of coffee from most places here is about $2.25 but this is San Francisco so you don't expect it to be cheap. I don't know if the prices are different at an actual Starbucks, coffee is coffee.

Where the hell is it $3.50 other than inside a hotel?
>>

I described it very briefly in the previous thread like this: "It's a heist story in a fantasy setting. We have a a con man who oozes with sleaze (some call it charm), a wizard pyrotechnician who dabbles in the art of surliness, and a bright-eyed fox-eared safe-cracker who's something of a sniping sass-master. Together, they rob nobles!"

The story is heavily focused on the trio performing the heist and I would consider them all to be main characters. While I love all of them, my favorite would be Aldamir, the elf pyrotech wizard. The VN is very focused on their current adventure rather than their pasts, but I enjoyed writing his biography. Basically, he was once a the head of the Destruction Department of a country's magic academy. He achieved the position through merit but lacked the tact and patience for the politics of Academia. He held this position for roughly forty years. However, the rise of artillery and the mass production of guns made the school of Destruction magic less important. As he became a less valuable asset and stood in the way of success of many of his peers, he was ousted from the Academy and stripped of his salary.

In order to provide for himself, he had to do something with his only talent: Destruction. He ends up becoming a performer, creating displays for parties (excerpt from bio).

"At first, he hated the idea of reducing the noble art of magic to a mere spectacle. But after he created that spectacle and witnessed the dazzling rapture of lights and explosions he became entranced by it. He started seeking ever more extreme effects, increasingly brazen displays, and with each show his fervor grew wilder and wilder as he pushed the boundaries of magic further and further. Of course, his obsession lead to where obsession always leads-- disaster."

He causes a fatal accident and is stripped of his license to practice magic. With no legitimate employment available, he turns to crime.

(cont)

Honestly, I have written a lot of fantasy, but most of it has been in the context of DMing for Dungeons and Dragons / Unknown Armies / Call of Cthulhu. I also once ran a role-playing board with really strict standards for entry (I wanted to write with people who had strong styles or were really sincere about wanting to write).

So this story so far feels like a really fun D&D campaign. It is more puzzle focused. It's going to be very short (the priority of my artist is to have it published ASAP, he has been on too many projects that have died) but I really hope you guys enjoy it. I hope that my writing is at least entertaining and that you feel a fraction of what I do for Lyle, Dasha, and Aldamir. If it is well received, I have also written what I would call "the outside" of the heist, which places our trio as pawns in a very dangerous game of power politics, conspiracy, and revolution.

Never mind I have a better idea. I was thinking, maybe I could go on ebay, order a Starbucks uniform. I go in early, say 6 am. I introduce myself, say hello, tell them I was just recently hired. I then go about my day, "pretend working". Then, they will give me a break. I will use this 30 min break to write. And then I will get back to work when that 30 minutes is over. Then I go in the next day to "pretend work" some more, like take peoples orders, clean, or whatever the hell starbucks workers do. And then when payday comes, I'll write myself a fake check. I will then seal this fake check in a fake letter. So when my manager is passing out checks, I will simply whip out the "fake check" and tell him he already handed me my check. I can then continue this charade for as long as I need to, "working" as a "employee" at Starbucks. This way, I'm not spending money but I am also getting some writing done. Foolproof.

Depends on how interesting they are, but a world feels empty if there's nothing but you and the love interests.

The problem is always that when side characters start getting interesting, someone is going to start whining about them not being fuckable. (Of course, even giving someone a sprite is enough for people to start that up.)

To give an example of a VN I know that does 'giving one full time side character' badly, Sunrider Academy has no side characters aside from the little sister, who (as you can imagine) doesn't fill in any background roles during school time.

A school setting feels empty without a homeroom teacher, a classmate, or a male of the same age as the protagonist.

Farther*.

Anton is described as very serious, but also kind. People are intimidated by him, and we get a small cut where two people walking by are whispering to each other about him. They something along the lines of how his hair used to be the same color as Florien's, but the blood of his enemies dyed it red, etc etc. Anton doesn't seem to care, and says he'd rather people spread rumors like that than he be lenient.

He seems a little upset that Florien left Ciel alone, but makes a comment such as "If you need anything, call on the Royal Guard. I'd prefer if you just called on me directly, however...", and Ciel gets all blushy-blushy. She lies and says they're just heading into town, and will stay away from borders.

And now Florien is back.

Anton leaves immediately. Ciel asks Florien if he's really okay with leaving, since he won't see Anton for awhile. Apparently the two aren't close, and don't have much in common (more so due to busy schedules than not wanting). Ciel jokes about how they have 3 traits in common, which is pretty hair, same eye color, and they're both stubborn.

After some jokes and shenanigans, the two leave the castle. They make plans on how to proceed with caution, and Florien brings up the idea of them travelling overseas, where people for sure wouldn't recognize her. Ciel agrees, and says he's unususually agreeable today.

In some crazy twist of fate, the castle already knows something is up. Anton comes galloping in, and reveals he also knew about the passage. He begins to say something about why the King is actually worried (because the King does not know that she ran away), but stops speaking.
In the end, he won't budge about it, so he says he'll try and figure out a way to allow Ciel to leave. It's suggested that he could come with them to help convince the king, and Anton agrees.

Last update for now! I'll be back later.

After Anton leaves, Florien and Ciel seem a bit unsure on what to do. Florien says Anton might have lied, and the two could actually be walking into a trap if they do what he says (meet up at a specified area).
Ciel decides Anton wouldn't lie, and while Florien isn't so sure, they make their way there. There's a cute scene where Florien, admiring how happy Ciel looks, smiles-- and then Ciel comments on how happy Florien looks.
The scene ends, when Ciel recounts how cool Florien was by saying, "If you want her to be safe, I want her to be happy!", and Florien gets embarrassed.
Thanks for reading along guys!

Practice, read Loomis, practice some more. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and especially don't be afraid to create something that looks like shit.

Learning how to do gestures will help you a LOT with bringing motion to your art and understanding how bodies break down into shapes. There's a ton of online resources for that.

You're not going to be great fast, but you'll steadily improve.

Projects with a publisher fail exactly the same.

Quantum Suicide raised $15K but it wasn't enough.
Sekai projects have raised $15K but it wasn't enough.

Stop spreading the misinformation that you need Sekai to succeed. You can fail exactly the same with them and succeed even better without them.

winter wolves games are odd because I've played a few of them, and I know he uses different artists/musicians/writers for all of them, but I found every single ww game I played so far (heileen, flower shop, roommates, and always remember me) to be really lackluster... maybe it's just because i'm not into sim games, and most of his games are sim games - or at least, have heavy gameplay - but they don't do anything for me at all.

well, heileen is kind of fun because of the setting, and i like all the art of cute girls in lingerie, but the writing is pretty dire, and the plot makes no sense at all.
>>
>>125910010

I liked Roommates: at least it isn't Bionic HEarts 2.
>>
>>125912362
The writing in Roommates was fine, I just found the sim aspect really tedious. I guess sim games aren't for me. Then again, I really, really enjoyed Littlewitch Romanesque, but the sim elements of that involved actual 'gameplay' (though it was fairly minimal), so maybe that made a difference.

What is Bionic Heart 2 like? What's so bad about it? I've not read it.
>>
>>125912752

To answer that question, I have to explain what was good about Bionic Hearts one: it was ridiculous and B-movie-ish. It had a charm in being bad.

Bionic Hearts 2 tries to go serious while not actually improving in quality.

It's like how SUnrider reduces the number of characters to interact with when they go to Academy, but they don't add anything notable to the game but sex scenes and a terrible management sim

Fucking boring.

I don't like sims, either.
>>
>>125910010
Loren and roommates are pretty good, as is the first bionic heart, and that one game about the office but only the one yuri route is good. Nicole is just okay.

Always remember me is pretty bad and the flower shop has okay writing but bad characters.

>>125912752
I played it and yeah.Someone made a great point that it could have been an okay game if it wasnt a sequel - but it threw everything interesting about bionic heart (romance and a main character you could care about) out the door and the social battle mechanic really wasnt done too well. Great example of a half baked game.
>>
>>125879534
That depends on the quality of the VN you're comparing your art to. If you got a tablet, drew your lines with far more confidence, and practiced gesture drawing to eliminate a lot of that siffness, you'd be right up there with a lot of EVN artists. If you worked on it every day, something like that would probably only take you a couple months to half a year.
Some people completely devote themselves to their art and become based within a year or two, so it all boils down to how much time and effort you're willing to expend.
>>
>>125915323

How much you're able to, too.

I mean, good artists are hard to come by.
>>
>>125912752
>>125913128
>>125913603

What I want to know is what is the reason for the low reviews (scores on VNDB) I am currently producing a VN and when I look at the Bionic Heart screenshots I see:

1) A lot of characters with sprites. I am not sure how many poses they have, but that's a lot of assets.
2) A lot of BGs. True, they aren't beautiful or anything, but there's a good amount of them and they are sort of 90's quality.
3) A lot of voiced characters.

So, is it the writing? What is the reason behind those scores?
>>
Somebody better post progress...or else.
>>
>>125912752
I like that the Leetstreet Boys did the theme song for Roommates tho, since they also produced this masterpiece:

>>
>>125915504

Bionic Hearts 2 takes out the voicing, if you're wondering.

But both are relatively low quality for the amount of work that went into them.
>>
I liked bionic heart. B-movie is pretty good term for it but it had 27 endings and they were all pretty fun to get. I think I only got 18 of them though.

Why do you say low quality? It's an old game but it isn't too horribly written.
>>
>>125917571

Well, I think that your defense of it is "it isn't too horribly written" implies that there are quality issues with the writing. If the writing is not praiseworthy, then well, that is something against it I think.
>>
>>125915782
>>
>>125917857

What exactly is wrong with the writing? Jesus, what a vague thing to say. Is it the grammar? The prose? Lots of spelling mistakes? Plot holes? What is it?
>>
>>125918257

(Not him) I don't think it's anything mechanically wrong with the writing. (I can't remember one time when, in all of my autistic rage I screamed at a spelling mistake, which I do a lot)

I just don't think it tells a very good story.
>>
>>125917857

Here, I'll take some lines and comment. Lines are from this trailer. http://store.steampowered.com/app/314200/

"I still remember some of the stories my father used to tell me about global warming, and the warnings sent out by some groups of scientists in the twenty-first century. But those who ruled the world were too busy fighting each other and too greedy to listen, so they ignored the menace."

Both the ideas and diction are extremely simple and every description is vague and imprecise. The writer uses phrases like "some of the stories" and "some groups of scientists" and "those who ruled the world", but none of these are actually given any depth or meaning. Everything is so abstract and impersonal.

To write that better, I would begin by telling one of the stories that his father told him, then shift to the idea that there were many such stories, and then provide maybe a bit of background about one of the wars or conflicts "those who ruled the world" were focusing on instead-- some examples of events in this world. This would add depth.

Then there is the exchange between Tanya and Luke. The dialog is painfully awkward and the lack of narration outside of dialog prevents any buildup of depth. The reader is required to assume some things that make little sense. Most of Tanya's dialog is also stock for "android"/"robot girl" characters that I have seen before.

So those are some specific gripes. That the writing lacks specificity and depth, and that the characters do not feel compelling or real.
>>
>>125923828

Tanya, thankfully, wins points in the 'absurd sex figure department'.

And Luke sounds kinda hardboiled despite being a bitch.

Also, if society is so fucking authoritarian, why the fuck can Luke own a gun?

Brits don't fucking do that NOW and they supposedly have a democracy.
>>
>>125924087

I actually really liked the voice acting and sort of felt like he deserved more badass lines. I would definitely cast that guy as like some bad-ass rogue operative.
>>
>>125924235

HELLO AGAIN FRIENDS!

So, continuing from where we left off, Shuuki manages to get pretty much all of his homework done with Masa's help! An excellent development.

They have dinner after, wash dishes since they're the last to arrive, and reminisce a bit about the past. It's been four years since Shuuki last washed dishes. Damn.

We have a dream sequence where a tiny Shuuki asks his mom about their names and she tells them they were named after the seasons and also a story about the seasons fighting or some shit.

Tiny Shuuki doesn't like being named after the fall because everything's all dead and brown.

His mom's response:
"Oh, Shuuki. When one thing dies, something else is born. We wouldn't be able to have autumn without summer ending, right? If you think of it that way, each death is really just a new beginning..."

And then Shuuki wakes up! We see this particular image after every watery nightmare of his.

It's September 6! School has resumed. Masaharu's in a rush to get out the door (complete with toast) because he needs...................... pencil lead.

Very SPECIFIC pencil lead, mind you. He doesn't want any of Shuuki's. Shuuki comments that Masa's weirdly picky about some things, and then notices that his brother left his backpack behind. Great job, Masaharu.

Shuuki thinks he's going to be able to chase Masaharu down. Of course, he can't find Masa so he heads to his brother's favorite convenience store.

We come to the bridge where Fuyuka died. He's almost crossed it--

His parents take time off to come to the funeral-- which is an odd way of putting it, to me. Don't you want to take time off to MOURN? Who cares about the damn funeral your child is dead. Is your only priority keeping up appearances?
