I am here, and I am NOT queer!
>>
So, as I was saying, a lot of games are hesitant on the gay, requiring the player to make the first move, making all the gay routes have 'friendship' endings possible instead of only romance, while the het ones just go straight for I LOVE YOU LET'S MAKE BABIES.

Have you noticed this? Does it bother you? Would you prefer it if het routes had friendship options too?
>>
I'm frankly amused by how /evn/ used to be the place where the KS-clones would shit on each other. Now that there are evidently at least one or two BL devs here, the claws are out.
It's fun to watch.
>>
>>125608691

> people becoming more critical in their consumption

oh no, the humanity!
>>
>>125608276
Yes, it bothers me. If it's gay, commit to it and make it gay.
>>
>>125609453
Does it make a difference if it's a gay route in a mostly-het game vs an all-gay game?

I remember being surprised at how very not-gay Asphyxia was.
>>
>>125609074
I'm not complaining. It's more entertaining to see fresh faces shitting on each other instead the same old group of jaded guys. I believe in diversity!
>>
>>125608691
I am not a BL/GL dev, but I play them myself. It's annoying when those types of games are "lite" on the gay to accommodate those who don't even like the genre.
>>
>>125609628

Yes. To this day I'm still mad about True Love 95 making me play the gay route until to end in a black screen with a "haha and then we dated" note.

Fuck that.
>>
>>125609628
Yes it makes a difference. The "gay route" in het games are so few and far between there's really no point in even mentioning them. BL/GL games are already small enough already but yet evn devs are trying to shove in "no homo" in such a small pool of games that it tends to stand out. There are so many Het games in comparison.
>>
>>125609731
I'm a massive hypocrite, because I kind of hate that in games, but I can't bring myself to write an entire cast full of nothing but 100% gay people.
>>
>>125609992
>The "gay route" in het games are so few and far between there's really no point in even mentioning them.
Don't most het games have a gay route? I thought it was pretty common in otome and bioware and stuff.

>>125609886
The copout ending bugs me. I don't mind the gay route being harder to get than the main one, though, but if I've gone to the effort I want my proper gay end.
>>
>>125609996
It doesn't have to be 100% gay people. Nobody is arguing about that. People are arguing that people are shoving no homo into gay games that are being marketed as gay games.
>>
>>125610221
You obviously don't play a lot of het games. No they do not. And if they do, it's a joke route. Although in the Evn scene it's beginning to change a little bit with het games. But not enough to where it's actually noticeable.
>>
>>125609731
I feel the same way.
Granted, there are also players who want to see homo MCs in a game that isn't so heavily focused on sex and romance. It doesn't appear to be a very big group, but they ARE out there.
>>
>>125610282
If the MC is gay and all 4-6 love interests are gay how is that not 100% gay people?
>>
>>125612064
Again, missing the point. We're talking about toning down the gay in a game that's marketed and referred to as Boy's love.
>>
Is the BL audience even okay with that half-assed no-homo option bullshit? I've heard people bitch endlessly about Japanese BL games just because a love interest mentions having been interested in women at some point.

I don't even know why you'd want to cater to the no-homo-bromo audience. They're usually not even concerned about the actual porn/romance in BL, but the notion that they couldn't possibly empathize with an MC who doesn't want to fuck girls.
>>
>>125608276
I'd like it in general if I could just find out the various characters' stories without necessarily falling in love with them.
>>
>>125612247
But that's what I'm trying to say though? Even if I'm setting out to write a BL game, I have a really hard time conceptualising and characterising a gay protagonist and a completely gay set of romance options, unless he's meeting them _at a gay bar_. If you're just supposed to be meeting these people as you go along, I feel stupid writing them all gay.

But at the same time I'm annoyed by the prospect of being given five datable guys and then finding out that the one I went for is straight.
>>
>>125610221

I'll give it to you in your proper gay end.

>>125608276

I don't know if I would prefer either game having friendship + romance options. Either the story is going to introduce a romance subplot and resolve it, or it's going to introduce a friendship and resolve it. I think the focus on what the relationship is about needs to be made clear from the start, and that waffling on it can weaken the entire story, since every character interaction needs to then be framed from a romance/non-romance perspective.

If you do the branch, it should be early, that way you can build either a romance story or a friendship story, but I think just deciding the relationship from the outset is the best way to go. The decision point needs to be early enough that the rest of the story continues logically from it-- if it's too late, than all the logic leading to that point is weakened.
>>
>>125613239
>But at the same time I'm annoyed by the prospect of being given five datable guys and then finding out that the one I went for is straight.

Queen at arms did this in inverse (MC falls in love with a gay guy) and it annoyed me to no end.

The thing is, you can have both men and women as LIs, what you can't do it have a Boy's Love game with scenes like your MC waking up with a boyfriend and then give "opt out" options for the benefit of no one.
>>
>>125613590
>I'll give it to you in your proper gay end.

The example we are talking about is a literal black screen. Gay route confessed to MC and then... cut to a black screen with narration about how they became and item.

So to explain the joke, the joke I was making is that I would fuck you in your "proper gay end". This is where end means your rear end, or ass. I was making a joke where a "proper gay end" is a metaphor for your butt. That was the joke. Thank you for making me explain it, I'm sure it will be of benefit to everyone else in the thread.

--
My sincere reply to your opinion is that it's useless to not develop a gay relationship and then provide some sort of "and they lived gaily ever after" in the ending title.

I think I would rather heavily imply gay/lesbian romances with side characters. But I like my protagonists to have fixed sexual orientation.

They are either straight, bi, or gay from the start and that is who they are. I think that about all of my characters. You cannot just romance someone who is a lesbian and convert them to the church of cock. If that is possible, they were/are not really a lesbian.

I think as a writer you have your own preconceived notions about sexuality. Mine is that sexuality has very little room for choice and is mostly a fixed characteristic (even if that state is an openness to either gender). If your opinion is different, I think that allows for differences in how you handle it-- you could believe that all people are essentially pan-sexual and just need the right persuasion. That is a legitimate world view though it clashes with mine.

That honorific, and there are ones for every member of your family, like most Japanese honorfics are based on status. In this case if you said "Aniue" or "Chichiue" it would be because your brother or father is like royal blood or you're in a family that is so extremely prestigious you treat your family as royalty.

Stirfry should take between 5-10 minutes, ideally shorter. You might not know how to stir fry. Most of the concern is actually burning things.

Maybe if you have a shitty induction stove it takes longer, but if you're cooking with gas, it's not at all hard (the stove pictured is a gas range cooktop >>125624283 )

IMO italics suck for anything more than a short sentence, and in many fonts they either look bad or it's hard to tell at a glance that it's thoughts instead of speech.

I can agree about shitty italic fonts. You can't always just tell the font to be italic-- sometimes you have to get the italic version of the font.

Does anyone have advice for making characters cute but believable?

Sometimes I struggle to break out of using the same narrative style for characters (i.e. my own way of thinking/acting) otherwise I end up using cliches by mistake and archetypes.

How can I maintain some aspects of the cliche (i.e. tsundere) so that the character has some anime cuteness/comedy, but also write believable, enjoyable waifus?

Okay, not shit, but a LOT worse than what they had in their dA. My suspicions of them just drawing over game screenshots have deepened.
>>
>>125671726

Hey, at least you posted it.

Remember that people tend to lead with their best/most time consuming stuff. Try to check the quality of other commissions so you get an idea.

Personally, I'd recommend trying to connect a bit more with an artist before investing too deeply-- then, sadly, I think you need to commission a few things to get an idea of their work and decide if you want to have them as your main artist.

Ultimately if they aren't interested in working with you long term and creating in the style that you have in mind (or one you like) it's not going to work out.

Say "thank you" and don't eat your apple, but also don't go aroundtelling people how much you suck for bringing me this shitty old apple you've probably found in your backyard.
No, I got lost in my own metaphor, sorry, I should obviously still warn people you like to give away bad apples.
Carry on.

writing is nonsensial
characters are flat (and apparently the lead guy hangs on to those characters for 10 years or something)
sprite art in Sunrider is boring (just get the pack with all the lewd CGs if you want)
absolutely retarded tacked-on "gameplay" in Academy that's only there as padding
(JP is a retarded closeted bigot, but his reviews on Sunrider have some valid points. Yeah, it's so bad even JP is partially right about it.)

>>
>>125684993
I'm fairly sure I thought JP was right in at least another couple of cases.

Academy's gameplay was absolute shite, and instead of recycling sprites to add some minor characters and color, they did not. (I can believe you can't afford more than four routes, but I don't have to believe that you can't pay for a standard sprite) That's why I know better than to trust again
>>
>>125685065
They've got at least 20K owners of a 30 dollar game. $600K minus Steam and Sekai's take. They've at least raked in 300K. But I guess a few extra $$$ from Patreon can't hurt.

it seems like a shame because sunrider academy has all the groundwork there to be a good game, if only the devs had added more events and scenes to stop the stat raising being so mind-numbingly tedious... having a few more random background characters would also have been a nice touch, since it felt weird being able to explore this whole city and only ever running into the same 4 characters. it was weirdly desolate, like some kind of zombie apocalypse.

Tbh these screenshots make me want to play the game less than I did before. I haven't played the demo so I didn't know MC would be such an asshole. Do his eyes even change form or are they stuck in that 3deep5u position?

How du you feel about asshole MCs /evn/? I can't stand it if they're that teenage brand of superficial asshole, makes me want to punch them in the dick. Tsundere is ok though.
>>
>>125711117
>How du you feel about asshole MCs /evn/?

I can deal with them if they get some sort of comeuppance, but if they are assholes all the time and get away with it, it gets annoying.
>>
>>125710165
Gives a whole new meaning to "mixed race babes".
>>
>>125712058

I generally like them, but they have to be played correctly.

Taichi from Cross Channel is a great example of an asshole MC that I feel carries a lot of the story. If he was a kind guy or some sort of flavorless blob, Cross Channel would not function as a story. He is a very broken man and well aware of who he is. This carries the plot in interesting directions.

Rance is another great example of an asshole MC. He fits in with the rules of his universe, he is an unrepentant cad, a conquering rapist, a warlord that uses force to perpetuate his immorality. He feels little if any remorse for his actions and because they have little other choice, his close comrades accept him for who he is. He is also a bit helpless-- he isn't an asshole because he "wants" to be an asshole, he's an asshole because that is who he is, he is as helpless to his urges as his victims are to resist them.

I would take an asshole over a self-insert any day of the week.
>>
>>125711117
>How du you feel about asshole MCs /evn/
It really depends. I think a lot of young writers dont realize why an asshole MC works, and that's because they use it as a means to an end but still have a moral code. It's why Mal from firefly sounds like a cunt when you read about him, but is loved as a character - he's an asshole but he protects the ones close to him with said assholeism. If he did everything without his moral code he would be the series antagonist.

I haven't played BCM yet but I would think it would be written well. The game goal seems to be to time travel and change your poor relationship with your brothers, so i think it's natural shuuki would be a cunt.
>>

>I haven't played the demo so I didn't know MC would be such an asshole.

>>
>>125713604

I have no issues with Rance because he's so exaggerated that it becomes funny.
>>
>>125713604
With Rance it helps that he actually does get shit done and he does do far more good than evil.

There are many people in the series who tolerate his shit because of that and others who respect him first because of his achievements and then decide not to care about the other stuff
>>
>>125711117
I'm the opposite. I wasn't interested but for some reason the game just looks a lot better than I thought it would. I'm glad somebody posted the screenshots. I'll probably buy it this weekend.
>>

>>
>>125714034
Why are you cutting out my 'would be'? Also is it shit?
>>
>>125716602
It's the exact same sentiment.
>>
>>125713604
Cross Channel's plot allows Taichi to be an asshole without consequences. He's also a comedian and it becomes clear as time passes just how broken of a person he really is, which allows the readers to sympathize with him.

Rance can also get a pass because he too is a comedian in a world that doesn't take much of anything seriously and his rampant assault on the female gender, willing or not, tends to be in comedic situations where the worst the girl will do is say "No" while she flails around a bit. There's never any real violence, screaming, blood, etc. with him. Rance almost always backs off if he feels they'll genuinely be hurt by it. The only times I've seen him disregard that is when he's up against a villain.

As long as an asshole MC isn't treated as a complete edgelord and/or has some nice character development, I think they can be a very viable protagonist.
