Reading these ideas for endings just fills me with sadness. Numerous people came up with creative ideas that actually involve the characters and what we've learned in the game, but Dontnod went with the two most predictable routes.

It makes me think that Rachel never committed to anything with Chloe because she knew who Chloe really wanted.It also makes sense if you believe that Rachel gave Max the rewind power and did so specifically to save Chloe

It's possible it still added up to less overall time than previous episodes, though.
The game started development in 2013, and a near-finished copy of episode 2 was leaked iirc alongside episode 1, so that was almost finished before it's 8 weeks of development even started - that 8 weeks wasn't spent building the episode, but fine tuning it, and probably working on episode 3 as well. Who knows how long overall they'd had to work on it. They probably always had a good chunk of each episode complete long before the final release of the preceding one.
But by the time they got to episode 5, time may have caught up with them, and the 12 weeks they took to make it might have literally been all they had to build the episode from scratch.
They've said before how surprisingly insane episodic game development is, how budget caught up with them, etc.

Well at the end of the day, no one WANTS to write a piece of shit. Anything can happen during development.
The logical side of me, that's actually worked on doomed projects where we had to just spit-glue and pray by the end of it, is 100% certain that Dontnod just tripped over themselves and is as saddened as we are.
But the fan in me is still raging and will never forgive them.
And the love child of those two knows I'd be a fool to trust them again, since either way, they still fucked up. Whether it was shit writing or poor time management, there's nothing to make me believe they won't make the same mistake with their next game.

Even if they found Rachel alive, Max wouldn't have to fear. Chloe would have called off whatever her and Rachel had, perhaps just staying friends, for lying to her about Frank. Chloe would pick Max once she had someone else to compared Rachel to- and would notice the flaws Rachel had. Dishonesty is one of Chloe's biggest turn-offs, and Rachel was very dishonest with her, where as Max was truthful even if the truth hurt.
In the end it would be Max and Chloe, and possibly Rachel if she was willing to keep their friendship intact.

I think they aren't as sad/regretful as they should be.
They must be aware that they had to rush the final episode, and that there were quality dips in parts, but it truly seems they were always going to do that final 'polarizing' choice and are fairly proud of it. I'll bet that the directors commentary backs this up.
Maybe a few years down the line they'll begin to look back and understand why Polarized was such a let down for some fans, and we'll get some honest introspection.

Rachel is everything Max thinks she wants to be. Outgoing, cool, successful in school, popular with everyone including Jefferson, was there with Chloe when she wasn't, etc.
So it's not simply that Chloe is fond of her that Max is jealous of. The idea with Rachel is that she is this perfect model Max thinks she should strive to be, but realizes throughout that she can be her own person and that Rachel wasn't perfect either, had her own problems and insecurities. Realizing that Chloe really likes her and doesn't compare her to Rachel is of course a big part of that, but it's not purely about that. It's being unsure of herself in general and asking herself who or what she wants to be and stuff like that.

I think Rachel/Chloe wouldn't make for a healthy relationship myself. I definitely think Rachel was dishonest with her in order not to hurt her - in contrast to Max Rachel would have noticed that Chloe likes her romantically. She just didn't feel as strong about Chloe romantically, but still as a friend. Maybe that changed at some point, but ultimately their personalities really wouldn't mesh too well. Rachel really is a "punk" girl in that she wants to break free and end up in LA or whatever. Chloe never really wanted that, just thought she did. Emotionally she needs security and stability and doesn't just want to leave everything and everyone behind. A relationship with Max is way more sustainable with that.

It seems the choice was always there, but who knows in what context. Working with the leaks, we'd been theorising for a while around those ending locations and what they might mean without going as pants on head retarded as what we ended up getting.
Between Nathan's storm lines and the cut Hospital ending, who knows how different their original intent might have been while being more or less the same superficially.
But yeah, it's also possible they just didn't think about how an episodic structure might affect how fans would interact with a game and impact people's expectations.
If they'd had all the time and money they needed, maybe they still would have disappointed everyone, but I'm sure they would have done miles better than what we got.

Chris Divine was in Paris when they were writing episode 5 so the process was probably sped up.
Also, I think he wrote the last draft lines after they'd already started recording? Unless I'm misremembering. Plus, they don't record chronologically, they do it in batches with different actors together. They had Max and Jefferson's VA recording first (all the scenes with the two of them), then Max and Warren, then at some unknown point towards the end when Ashly was back in the US they recorded Max and Chloe's scenes, and then they all do separate isolated sessions for less important dialogue. So the last stuff to be drafted was probably something involving Chloe.

They can't just come out and say that, they're a small struggling company and have to stand by their product and their publisher, and post-finale they're going to be expecting a boat load of new sales from people who held out until it was all released.
They have hinted things though. There was a post floating around shortly after release from someone who allegedly met them and heard the game wasn't doing as well financially as it needed to, Koch made statements early on that budget was a problem and about how hard episodic development is, they've answered some questions kind of sneakily etc.
It was only after a few days that they started pulling the "I wouldn't change almost anything" bullshit.

Don't assume they were working on it full tilt with all their staff at that time (if they were, then they're even more pathetic than I thought).
The extra time felt more like a marketing exercise to me, and it was especially suspect that they set the time of release so long in advance, where as for every other episode they couldn't say when the release time was until days before the release. They were probably given the time, but not the budget to do anything.

It seems likely to me that the basic ending choice, in all its high concept idiocy, was the first thing they came up with. They probably pitched the game with that basic ending duality.
But they weren't smart enough to then make a universe where the characters could conceivably get to that ending without repeatedly picking up the idiot ball and falling through plot holes.
They also had the problem in that no one really cared about the high-concept cliche 'must sacrifice the person you saved to restore the timeline' crap they were peddling either. Everyone was invested in the characters, the more mundane drama.
Unfortunately, they stubbornly stuck with their ending choice rather than modifying it to logically fit the universe they'd created. As a result, everyone raeged.

I always wonder how on earth Chloe got accepted into Blackwell if it's apparently such a prestigeous highschool and getting accepted is an occasion for such hysteric happiness. Keep in mind, Blackwell only has a 1 year program, so Chloe must have applied for it while she was at the peak of her "don't give a fuck" rebellious phase.

From what I can gather Blackwell is a private high school that has specific programs for seniors. Which Max got into the photography program for her last year and transferred from whatever HS she went to in Seattle.
Chloe, on the other hand, went to Blackwell for her entire high school experience. Her file says something about her rebelling against a "non-mandatory institution". So Blackwell has to be private, but not very exclusive aside from the specialty programs.
Shit is confusing and makes the French obviously don't know how American school works.

The first time I tried listening to Spanish Sahara after having played it though, I immediately started crying like a bitch before the vocals even kicked in and had to nope out of it, not out of sadness for what happened in the game, but because it hit me that the game was dead.

I think I only cried at the end of Episode 2 (I didn't save Kate), but now I think I've at least welled up at "Obstacles" and "Crosses", as well as the menu and credits themes now that I listen to them in hindsight. As for the end, I cried partly because of Max's reaction and partly just because the whole thing was over. Like, think about it. You'll never get to play any of these episodes for the first time ever again. Going back through and playing again isn't the same. It's like the difference between living an awesome moment and watching a video tape of that moment. Despite the shitty endings, the fact that it's over in general is enough to make me emotional. It's like having to move away from your best friends and knowing you'll never see them again no matter how much you wish you could go back.

I dunno, I think once I can stomache this game enough to play the first four episodes again without flying into hysterics, it'll be pretty special, looking back on all the potential.
Still not the same as the very first run, but still.
To be honest, the very first time I played eps 1-3 weren't particularly special. I played 1-2 in succession while thinking this game was Tumblr shit, so even though it had it's moments it was clouded by my attitude. And ep3's ending got spoiled for me and overall fell flat with too much Chloe and not enough mystery. Episode 4 was the first one where I was like bursting at the seams with excitement and it had me on board almost the whole way through, I'll never forget how I felt the first time I went down into the dark room and found Rachel's grave, those were really special first-run moments.
My first run of ep 2 I guess had it's moments. The whole Kate storyline, even though I went into it knowing she would attempt suicide, was really gripping. And it feels like a million years ago looking back on that and remembering how much I despised Nathan thinking that he'd raped her, compared to now where I find him so fascinating and pitiful.
For some reason walking into the classroom ep2 always comes to mind when I think about this game's highlights. It just felt so natural and nostalgic of when you really did walk into classrooms and everyone was just doing their thing, and yet so alien to how videogames usually feel, making for a very unique atmosphere. And really immersing us into this high school world (which unfortunately we pretty much never saw again beyond this point, unless you count the party).

The only reason Max needed to save Chloe was because of Chloe's impulsiveness. Now that she has a reason to actually want to live that will happen less. And Chloe saves Max a few times as well. From Nathan and Frank, for example.

Max is a time god, she saves herself everytime and where she doesn't (Nathan, Frank) she could have. As long as Max has her time powers, of course she is going to be the "bodyguard".
Also, the majority of those deaths happen in visions or aren't really deaths (junk falling, Frank's beans - really?). And then they are all things out of her control. Chloe shoves someone while they have a gun on her, shoots herself playing with guns drinking, gets stuck on train tracks and practically hands Jefferson her life on a silver plate first walking right into his trap, then making all that noise and having her back exposed. If anything, here she failed being the bodyguard when Max even outright told her to be quiet.
I mean, Chloe is physically stronger and would be her bodyguard normally and kind of acts as that in the game too (when Max blacks out in the junkyard, with Nathan, David and Frank), but it's pretty clear that Max is the protector here, while Chloe is a bit "endangered". A proper reversal of this is actually one of the things I would have loved to see in the game. Either helping Max through an emotional breakdown or saving when her powers fail or something.

There is something bossy and managerial about a resolution that gratuitously punishes realistic, well-meaning characters, then essentially preaches that it's foolish to try to change the world for the better.
