It's a fanmade fighting game called Sonic: Gather Battle (I recommend it if you can find it). Long story short, Cream got a Smash Ball and summoned a bunch of Chao to help her; basically her Final Smash. And every time she got another one, she would add more Chao. It was very chaotic, to say the least. Some characters got K.O.ed in seconds.

Just note that you have to run it as administrator for the game to work properly. There are also two passwords that you can type in "Demo Mode": speedup and thispieceofcake. "speedup" unlocks all characters, while "thispieceofcake" changes the movesets and Final Smashes of Sonic and Shadow (from Super Sonic to WereSonic for Sonic, and from Chaos Mode Shadow to Super Shadow for Shadow). I'd list all of the Final Smashes, but I'll do that later in the thread.

>For me, Shadow the Hedgehog is a good game. A main reason for this games hatred is becasue it's so different from any other Sonic game. While it is a Sonic game (same characters, same universe, continues sa2's plot, etc.), it isn't Sonic's game (amazing the difference an apostrophe can make). It is Shadow's game. And Shadow doesn't play by Sonic's rules. He is ruthless, selfish, a hardcore loner, and will not hestitate to go so far as to kill anyone or anything to accomplish his goals. Also, speed isn't his top priority. I think the gameplay does a very good job characterizing this, with chaos powers, stages that don't focus only on speed, and a surprisingly well balanced and fun gun mechanic. I will conceed that the writing and cutscenes, heck the plot as a whole, are fatally flawed and even atrocious in places. It has generally passable and even a few decently creative ideas, but none of the story comes together well enough to be enjoyed. With a massive story re-write, and new cutscenes depending on the path chosen rather than the same scene no matter what past decisions are, this game could easily be one of my favorites of all time. The game could definitely use a better way of trackng down enemies you accidentally flew by, like a radar or map of some kind. I also happen to be fond of the grungy and gritty soundtrack.

Here's my problem with Julie. There's no real meat to her. She relies entirely on Knuckles to be important or at least noticeable at all. Unlike characters like Sally or Bunnie, I just don't think Julie is a fully realized character. Kenders' version of Knuckles is thoroughly unrecognizable and in many ways irreconcilable with the Sega version. Out of all the Sega cast pre-reboot, he suffered the most in personality and pretty much everything else.

He doesn't care about continuity, and it shows. He loves retcons, he practically uses them to wipe any possible conflict or shortcomings the heroes could have. Actions never have any impact. It's very stale and boring. He tries to tell "epic" stories, but when the characters aren't developed or characterized at all, we have no reason to care about them or the story. Something like pic related, where 2 characters have a simple conversation, has a much bigger impact than all the soldiers and prophecies Penders could throw at us, because we care about these characters and their struggles

Let us get to know her outside of her relationship to Knuckles. What are her motivations, likes, dislikes, hobbies, dreams, just shit like that can make a world of difference in how the audience can perceive a character.

The reason why people like ships like Rouge/Knuckles, Sonic/Sally, or really, any ship in general is because the two characters involved often interact in interesting and fun ways. There's a real dynamic in those. I can't say the same about Julie Su and Knuckles. They're so boring together. They don't bounce off of each other in fun or interesting ways Julie Su is entirely reliant on other characters to be anything at all, and even then, she's always the least interesting character in any group she's in.

Almost every piece of dialog is meant to establish something about their characters. We get their personalities and get an idea of what's important to them and where their strengths lie.
Whereas with Julie-Su, she just...liked Knuckles because her brain insisted on it. They didn't contrast each other in any interesting or dynamic way, but they also weren't given any real interests to share. Early on she just rants and raves about guys and gets snippy. Then she works with Knuckles because I guess it's convenient? But then she goes back to the Dark Legion and we never get any actual insight on what she's going through...like if she was having second thoughts, why did she go back to begin with? Was she actually torn or was she trying to just be convincing until a good opportunity came up? We don't know because we don't know her thoughts on it. At some point she seems really interested in knowing where her "family" came from but that's promptly forgotten when it gets them to the next plot point. Then we find out that she has amnesia twice over anyway. Oh, and Lien-Da and Kragok are her half siblings even though nothing ever hinted at it, but that's fine because she literally doesn't react to this news.
And then in the future Ken envisioned her as a nagging housewife who, when she gets pregnant the second time, KISSES the doctor because she's so thankful before riding off on a goddamn horse.

Sorry to keep coming back to them, but something along that line, it also makes an example of how characters who are similar (Sally and Clove) can still make for good interactions as well as characters with contrasting views (Bunnie and Cassia).
It's just so frustrating with Julie-Su because it's yet another example of good idea, utterly horrid execution. Someone from the enemy's side who believes in their ideology having to see and understand the other side is a great storytelling opportunity, so having it come down to soultouch and memory erasure is incredibly lazy.

I'm baffled why they bring up the fact that Julie Su did get shit for being an ex Dark Legionnaire, and do nothing with it. You'd think that the Guardian of Angel Island and all of echidnakind falling in love with an ex member of one of the greatest threats to most echidnas would cause some major controversy, ESPECIALLY from hte Brotherhood of Guardians, but nope. Nothing comes of it whatsoever.

I could see the Brotherhood working if it was acknowledged that their isolationist viewpoints were outdated in what was becoming a more integrated world, with Angel Island now being forced to be a player in the world stage in the wake of Robotnik's demise, and that Knuckles is expanding upon what it means to be a guardian, but Penders is not smart enough to do that. There is a good story to tell with these characters, but it's completely ignored

My problem was that, for someone who tried to make Knuckles "interesting", he already was. You could still have him be the guardian of Angel Island and have a supporting cast WITHOUT the echidnas. Have them show up via murals in ancient ruins or something that older inhabitants of the island know about. Have it be an adventure where Knuckles learns about why his people are gone, and still have him keep that tough exterior. God, one of these days when I have a fuckton of spare time, I might try to do a full comprehensive review/analysis of Penders' characters and writing as a whole, because it's just fascinating in how broken it is

I think the main focus of a paper like that would be that Penders' stories lack one crucial thing that makes comics fun: Passion/energy. There's no passion in anything any of his characters do. The stories have very little energy, and characters barely emote. The comic tells you how to feel without making you feel it naturally. Characters are either in what I like to call "Exposition mode" or just angry. None of the characters have a unique "voice", and his stories expect us to get emotionally attached to characters that are barely developed.
