For the main plot, meaning anything with Nyx, he doesn't have much to do. In the start he's all about training to get strong, he gets the Shinjiro event, and then he's still all about training, though saying he's learned a lesson. Otherwise he's largely a background character.

Actually, I think one of the weirdest things about P3 is Tartarus. Until the end of the game when you're told about Nyx, you don't really have a story reason to explore it other than "We don't know what it's for." You largely explore it to level up and complete sidequests.

You had no reason to really go up Tartarus but I suppose you go up before you figure out about the full moon shadows. By the time you figure it out you've probably already found one or two of the documents which could have enticed them to go further.

I wouldn't go that far, but I do think that all those characters are pretty distant from anything important, and Aki-Shinji-Ken suffer from having a really stupid interconnected character arc that drags down the more interesting characters (Aki and Shinji) for the sake of a shitty one
Fuuka is almost worthless, Koro actually is worthless
Aigis, Yukari, and Mitsuru are the big plot players, though even Mitsuru falls into the background a lot of the time
Junpei, Aigis and Yukari have more player relevance than the other characters because they spend notably more time with the MC than the others
I just saw the "bad" ending for P3 on youtube. how was that a bad ending? All the people get to live out the rest of their lives in peace before Nyx destroys everything.

I mentioned this a few threads back, or at least I was planning to, but you have Western RPGs like Fallout New Vegas, where you basically pick nearly everything your character does, and you have JRPGs where you largely go down a linear story to tell a mostly static story.
Persona's problem, at least in 3/4 is that it feels like its stuck in the middle of the two generalized styles. It's not open enough that your protagonist is wholly your character, but it's also not structured enough to make it worth giving the main character a complete personality and voice.
Unless something in the setup of the series changes, we'll always be a bit in the awkward middle.
