I just got MH4U on the DS, my first MH game since Tri, so I figure I should ask a couple of questions first before I get stuck in.
#1: I vaguely remember hearing something about charms being determined by the second you start your new game? What was that all about? I'd like to not have a repeat of Tri, where I spent 100+ hours mining charms online in that one powder stones mission and STILL never found the 7+ Evasion with 2 slots charm I was after. Anything I can do to increase my odds and reduce the time I'd have to spend mining for charms is a good thing.
#2: Tri for me was pretty much divided into "trying to find that one fucking charm that never drops" and "everything else". Is there anything else that's charm tier I should be aware of from early on in MH4U, especially if I can do stuff early on to help myself in getting whatever it is? Knowing my overall goal and getting the RNG bullshit out of the way early on would be great, I've no problems with getting 2% rare drops from hard monsters or anything like that usually(Hardest was the 8% chance of Stout Horns.)but 0% charm drops were an absolute cunt.
#3: In Tri I played a fairly mediocre hammer user who had some trouble stunning the target and got shouted at semi-often, I'm currently considering rolling GS this time around but the Bow looks tasty too. How are Great Swords in MH4U? How about bows? Are switch axes and longswords still only used by people who want to piss off others in multiplayer? What's good / bad and anything cool amongst the new weapons.

1. Charm table is rolled whenever you boot up the game. You can "savescum" like this by doing charm melding and save/quit until you get a good batch.
2. The only other thing I can think of that compares is relic weapons, and youdon't hvae to worry about those til endgame.
3. GS is good. Bow is okay. SA and LS are UU tier. CB and IG are great to the point that both bad and good players use them.

IG is really mobile with a white buff. It might look weak, just because it's a fast weapon, but the motion values on its attacks are massive.

The only way to improve the chance of getting a god charm is just getting more charms in total.
You can mine with charm god that one rathalos quest and bail via subquest.
But graven charms you can only get on high level guild quests as rewards. So charm god won't help there.

you can either specify the cat's preferred appearance or its forte and target preference
each cat has hard locked support actions which cannot be unequipped (displayed with a red E) and can also learn any of the other support actions displayed on the hiring screen
the numbers indicate how many charges the support action requires, and oftentimes you unlock support options by performing tasks such as levelling the cat to a certain level, hunting a specific mon, etc.
the palico dojo allows you to do quite a few things
when walking up to the sign and interacting with it, two options appear
the first one allows you to let a cat teach support actions or palico skills to other cats (i think)
the second one should allow you to either perform power training with cats (which incredibly quickly drains their enthusiasm), send them in for some relaxing, or have them adopt a new target preference (e.g. balanced -> smaller first for example)
for both options, the very last action allows you to tell your cats to end their action early and become available again
at the palico board you can assign support actions and palico skills to your cats
while the palico skills utilise a point system similar to that in p3rd, you no longer have to wait for them to learn the skills - they can use them right away as long as you have enough spare points
as for the support actions, you can assign as many as there are unlocked slots - just keep in mind that a few actions require charges before they can be used
having quickly tried it, the second to last option on the board apparently allows you to let cats perform ordinary training and get some gains while you are not taking them with you
that's about as much as i know

as there are no "main" and "sub" palicoes anymore, fortes aren't vital to unlocking basic abilities for your main cats
instead fortes seem to specify the pool of abilities a cat can come with
a support cat usually gains actions which focus around weakening or trapping monsters, whereas fighting cats learn offensive actions and buffs
i'm not quite sure if you can freely teach any actions to other cats via the dojo, but if i had to make a guess there might be some kind of limitation based on whether or not an action is forte-specific

G3 in the likes of MHFU practically didn't even exist, two or three epic quests and a few random Elder Dragons virtually unchanged from HR. In 3U you just fought two monsters in the arena. 4U is the only to introduce several brand new subspecies.
