i think people tend to discount the moon presence in their lore theories because it doesn't have a recurring name/appearance in e.g. item descriptions, unlike oedon
so people will spin these elaborate theories regarding oedon and discount the role of the literal final boss of the game
at least visually, i think it's really clear that moon presence's blood is the source of the beast plague, since the theme throughout the game is that the microbiome (blood, parasites, vermin) of the great ones transforms you into a being "like" the great ones, and all of the beasts in the game share key design elements with moon presence (especially it's grossly exposed rib cage and how it moves)
that and of course the moon is the source of werewolves, seriously

Some of the events there are essentially nightmare inhabitants reliving the past or being trapped in an endless memory of the past, but it doesn't directly take place in the past. Everyone who's claiming that it was Byrgenwerth that fucked up the Fishing Hamlet has no idea what they're talking about.
It was the Choir that found the fishing hamlet, their research labs connect directly to it. We know that the choir ran around calling themselves the carriers of Byrgenwerth's torch, and so when they told the fishpeople this, it makes sense that they'd blame Byrgenwerth for their problems. Furthermore, since the Old Blood was cursed in response to their atrocities, it makes sense that the perpetrators would be users of the Blood (which disqualifies Byrgenwerth), since otherwise cursing the Blood is unproductive.
The choir set up their research labs outside the Hamlet to conduct their experiments, and when Maria made the Hunter's Nightmare, she sucked both locations into the Nightmare to hide them from interlopers

Even the first trailer has the clock illuminated. It's the highest point in the city and you can always hear it's bell. It was all planned but there may have been changes made in location of some stuff, like Ebrietas not being in the chapel like in the trailer but at the altar beneath the chapel.
