Am I the only one who felt like this was... too good to be true? Like not necessarily implausible, but like, it felt almost like the ending of Brazil, where I was just expecting there to be some kind of caveat to everything that put it in a darker perspective.
It just seemed too ridiculously upbeat compared with the otherwise somber tone of the game. I was really expecting the ending to be something more along the lines of "Monsters can never escape, but they realize that's okay," or something.

There is though. If you decide to reset and play through the game again, you're literally dragging them all back underground to be your playthings, in pacifist, neutral, or genocide routes. They're prison is your enjoyment of replaying the game for whatever reason. Sans notices this if you do this. He'll have a photo of you and everybody else if you True Reset the pacifist ending.
There's also Asriel but some people are fine with him the way he is.

Thanks for the warning. I checked the wiki and it said you can change your name via opening file0 in a text editor. The game is aware however, and will print "Easy to change, huh?" in stats screen. When I stupidly killed Toriel, expecting her to stop at the last second and say 'Ok you've proven yourself, you can go'. Instead she died sadly and avoidably, and I immediately reloaded in horror of what I'd done.
It was her line about 'You're looking at me like you've seen a ghost!' that really startled me, and after the fight was concluded peacefully, Flowey's mockery and perfectly correct accusation really shook me. It really made me feel as though I wasn't in control in a way that no other game has managed before.
I feel kind of bad for the people who either let Toriel stay dead the first time, or the ones who managed to spare her first time around. It was definitely what grabbed me, and never let me go.

iirc by reading the signs in Waterfall it states some shit about Monsters are made up of magic, where Humans are made of water, thus somehow they are more durable, some shit about a Monster's will to fight is directly tied to their soul and thus their endurance, where Humans are none of that. Thus a Monster that is reluctant or scared is very vulnerable.This is arguably why Toriel can he defeated in a single hit.
However humans are flesh and blood and managed to overpower the Monsters. Monsters seek Human souls because they can become as strong as them if they absorb them. Also explains why an 8 year old child can fuck stuff up.
