According to the code, the power emitted is loosely based on 80% oxygen content and current temperature.
Having said that I experimented with intentionally crippling my cooling to let it heat up a bit since it's otherwise fucking ice cold in there and the power gain was insignificant.
You need about 6-7 emitters working through a series of prisms to really get it working, you want to beam to be visually thicker.

If it gets too hot it starts to get damaged, if it reaches 100% or more it explodes and everyone gets affected.
If you touch it with something that something gets destroyed. If you touch it yourself you get destroyed.
Oxygen has a low heat capacity but if makes it output the most energy. 100% O2 makes it glow.
Spacing it won't cool it.

Space is a poor conductor of energy and while its fast enough to freeze you if you if you jumped out without a suit on, it would not cool the shard fast enough and it would overheat.

It all comes down to safety. If you want a hot, risky engine that you should keep an eye on go for oxygen. It'll produce more power. If you want a safe, fire up and forget engine go for nitrogen.
Plasma is a middle choice between the two and doesn't really get you great results, and isn't really safe. especially since the shard is producing more plasma and you need to monitor the plasma levels carefully so it doesn't produce so much gas that the cooling loop can no longer fully cool it, leading to runaway heating.

Plasma tanks are usually filled, so you have to empty them out with atmos magic first.
2: If you want to replace the medbay airtanks, just walk up to them, set pressure to max, open the valve, then wrench them. Then just replace the 'accidentally emptied out' air tanks with plasma canisters.If you label a plasma canister as o2 canister it becomes blue and nobody can tell the difference till they use an analyzer on it.

Oh yeah. To heat or cool a canister the slow and inefficient way, just wrench down a heater/freezer and a connector next to each other. Make sure they're both facing towards eachother.
Then just place the canister over the connector and wrench it. (And turn on the heater/freezer and set it to the right temperature)
If you want to go hardcore, make a cooling loop in space for cooling and a burn chamber for heating. Atmosians can tell you more about that. Same principle applies however, canister attached to a connector to get the gas in/out. You can use a volume pump to get the gas from the canister into the loop and vice versa.

Constant respawns and lack of relative permanency of other vidya makes me bored, while in SS13 your mistakes have high chance of taking you out of round for hours. That makes me go into overdrive and feel real good about victories. HoS/Security being on the forefront of most fights, it's the best place to replicate such feeling.

Ion rifles are AoE and will knock out the mech and any laser or stun weaponry the person has afterwards, and there is no chance of friendly fire. I almost always use an ion rifle in conjunction with a riot shield and other defensive equipment when I take on a mech, and I never lose. You will probably not even need to use all of the ion rifles ammo to destroy one either, especially a HONK mech.

now that we have an economy, modify heist into some kind of mafia mode, where it's an underground crime organization trying to claim a certain amount of wealth.
unlike heist however, the goal is not to steal items but amass wealth into bank accounts. That means fencing raw goods back to the station crew, and possibly laundering the money so it doesn't all pile up in someone's account it can be traced to.
what I'd like to encourage is robbery and muggings. Things like beating up a miner and stealing his minerals, then ransoming them to R&D since no one else is bringing materials. All cloak and dagger like, since we'd have gang ranks, where higher-tier ones lose their greentext on a brig sentence. Say, one boss, 2-3 under-bosses, and 5 or so goons. If the boss and all under-bosses go to the brig it's game over. Unlike other antags, there's nothing to give the gang members away short of catching them in the act, or tracing them to the robberies or the like.
crew incentive for shutting them down is a bit iffy, but the idea is they'd be making a mess of the station and preventing crew from doing their job. Hopefully that's enough into triggering the job autists into action.
main things are that we'd need a proper banking system to encourage the laundering. Give the detective a way to play financial regulator to find the mob's bank account.

My biggest problem is that when shit starts going down and there's a full medbay staff, people will do everything to break in and get in the way of things rather than work in an orderly manner. This means injections are interrupted, IVs get yanked, pills get gobbled like candy, infections spread like wildfire and people get bled out by a guy who won't sit still with their bleeding friend.
Seriously top priority should be critical/infected, severely injured/organ damage, low blood/broken bones, dead but reviveable corpses, minor injuries/chem fixable injury and lastly small scrapes/optional surgery or misc.
If shits going down chem needs to direct small injuries and pharmaceutical cases to themselves (brain damage, non crit/orange patients) and hand out drugs, viro can assist with minor patients and cyro and genetics should deal with the cloning. But its always 1-2 ubermench doctors doing everything while the sub departments go autistic or borderline antagonistic.
