Other than that dispell people and throw shields, shadow priests are a support spec in vanilla raiding.

Vanilla WoW is an actually social game, the community is a vital part of it. As you spend your time leveling, you inevitably encounter other people, make friends and enemies, etc. There's always stuff to do in the outside world, so there's a lot of World PvP everywhere. Also, gearing up takes a lot of fucking time and effort, so if your char is in full epics, you actually feel like you've deserved it.
