New 3DS have a superior 3D scanning feature (i.e. the 3D actually works without straining yourself), a built in Amiibo reader, and there's more ram built in so everything loads much faster, where as the original model takes a little time to load apps and transition in the UI.

First game has 4 cases and the extra case of the DS re-release that it kinda isn't canon for the second and third game but it is for the rest, second has 4, third has 5. Dual Destinies is good but some people don't like it, it's really really easy though.
Don't forget that there is a game between the trilogy and DD, it's Apollo Justice and it's considered the worst of the main games, but you should play it before DD for things to make sense.

Mario party 10 is cool because the amiibos actually affect the amiibo board. You can scan an amiibos to play that characters' board and eventually tokens can be used to switch out the four quadrants on the board to change the rules of the board.
Smash is good for having super killer fighters and Mario maker is only good if you plan on making character specific levels. (Tfw still need to make my donkey Kong Jr factory level).
